so in the past week council employees have been coming to upperthorpe, and uprooting an awful lot of trees from the grassy area above the philidelphia estate. Nobody has told us why this is happening, it looks absolutely bloody shocking, and an awful lot of birds have lost a place to live. Any ideas whats going on?

Ask for information from 'Parks, Woodland & Countryside' on 250 0500.

well, rang that number, after being put through twice got told to ring streetforce, rang them had to give my details and I should be getting phoned back at some point.

I would have thought somebody would have at least notified local residents, (possible (GASP) even asked their opinions) but apparently not.

This isn't just housekeeping, this is total destruction of small but dense areas of woodland, and no one seems to care.

Something needs to be done about this, no doubt some property dealers building new trendy expensive flats for a quick profit regardless of the destruction of woodland areas.
Hope you get some answers.

Had the same type of problems when I was Ponderosa Ranger. The Parks, Woodlands and Countryside part of the council didn't have joined up thinking with the maintenence / streetforce section. Hence you'd get heavy mowers being used on a litter strewn field rather than after the litter had been picked up. Or a huge area of rare Yellow Rattle flowers being mown down early in the year before they had a chance to set seed because someone in DSO thought they were weeds.

Have you tried the Community Alliance? They should know if any particular new tree cutting regime has been authorised.

thankfully that is not the case, as the land is unable to be built on (if you're ever in upperthorpe have a little explore), in fact the bank that they are decimating used tohave houses on, but they slipped down the hill and had to be demolished.

Just got a call from highway trees, who said its nothing to do with them. The man was very friendly and said he'd enquired with house and home planning to see if its their contract, and parks country and and woodland said it was nothing to do with them either.

so who is it?!

I've found another number that 'should' go straight to the "Trees & Woodlands" Section of PW&C: 273 4138

I know that actual "Tree Officers" exist but I don't have any names or contacts to hand.

what number would I use for that?

I hate all this beaurocracy. Local rumour says it was instigated by the police, due to fear of muggings in dark areas etc. but this is more than a little excessive

The Sheffield Council Tree Officers are Nick Selwood and Dan Lewis. Again, try the 2500500 number or Council main switchboardon 2726444.

right, found out (from one of the workers) that some residents of the philidelphia estate complained that gangs hide in the bushes, so the police + housing association told the council to chop them all down.

I have lived here since I was 5 and all I remember is hiding in them when I was little, and to be totally honest the "gangs" hang around on the estate. tis ridiculous

Amazing ! If these kids had been uprooting trees it would have been 'mindless vandalism'. Hope nobody complains about gangs hiding in Ecclesall woods ;)
