Do what I do, stand six inches further away from the mirror each year, that way you don't notice the extra wrinkles, trouble is, mirror's too far away to see. Seriously Ken' I recognise two names on friends reunited site, but can't make my mind up weather its worth seven quid to make contact.

I went there and what I remember was Miss Finchham (music teacher) Mr Ladbrook, Mr Granville (rode a Triumph Grand-Prix motorcycle), The Headmaster was Mr.Edgerton, Think the woodwork teacher was Mr Yates. Left mid. 50s, lived in leedham Rd.
Hope this gives the memories a shot

I went to Shiregreen Sec from 1956 to 1960. Mr Lamb was the headmaster. My favourite teacher was Mr Martin. I always wanted to fall asleep in Mr Broadheads lessons. Hated Mr Laughton the science teacher. I also remember a lot of fellow pupils.

Shiregreen might not have been the best school in Sheffield but I think we all received a good standard education and they did try to teach us to respect others.

Dollypeg I dont remember the teachers you mentioned but Mr Lamb rings a bell Mr edgerton must have been there before.
From the dates it looks if we just missed each other. Her Majesty got me for two years in 57. Was in sheffield in May but didnt get to the school area is it still standing? some one said they had built houses on the old brickyard, what are the names of the pupils you remember? for me its, Raymond Warring,Terry Goddard, Jimmy Betts,Rispa Ward,Brenda Ward (not related) Roberta Hoskins ( Chip shop fame)David Cartlidge,Micheal Keith,Eric Wood and his brother Geoff. WOW once you start.... better put a lid on it, As you can see I have just found The Forum, What a joy.

Yes, remember Mr Martin, he used to throw blackboard rubber at anyone misbehaving, I hav,nt heard anyone mention Mr May, he was our teacher in the final year. I can remember Miss Fincham being chuffed because I made a model sputnik from a ping pong ball and bits of wire, with a coat of silver paint, then crawled up into the loft above the class room to suspend it from the air grill in the middle of the roof.
It was all the rage that year, 1957? as the sputnik had just made its flight round the earth.
Does anyone remember Miss Sumerset? she took us in the first year, she seemed ancient even then.
Mr Paige was the woodwork teacher, Mr Yates took science, and I think it was Mr Tyndale who took tech drawing.
I used to hate sitting crossed legged in the hall singing forty years on growing older and older, what a bloody silly song!
Still, many memories, even though they seem a million years away!!

I left Shiregreen School early fifties -52 I think- I remember Miss Fincham well I think she also taught sewing. Miss Somerset did my make-up and hair for a school play 'The Crimson Coconut' and I turned out looking like Miss Somerset with the tiny bun.
Mr Edgerton was head then and the song '40yrs on' was his former college song I heard. Does anyone remember a tall teacher who was from Canada? He taught French and I think sport. He taught us some kind of ball game Stool Ball?
Pupils I remember Anne Burns Annie Green twins Stuart & Terry , Yvonne Nightingale etc

Hi Littlemalc and Nanrobbo its amazing once you get going how things just flood back to you, thanks for the correction on woodwork teacher Mr Paige knew I was wrong as soon as I saw it. Looks like Miss Finchham is known by a few of you, did you know her as Fanny Finchham? she took us for music and singing and I remember one song that had a line in it, Hear we sit like Birds in the wilderness, and when it got to that line most of us would sing, Hear we S---T like birds in the Wilderness, she never was impressed much with that, Bless her memory.
Yvonne Nightingale had a crush on her were is she know?
How about getting on the tram at Firthpark and going to freeze your Butt off at Sutherland road baths? or having culture stuck in your face with The Halle Orchestra at The City Hall.

Yes, can you remember "fanny Fincham" standing on a little stool to conduct in the hall? if anyone close to her did not duck, they would almost get clobbered.
I must be one of the few who enjoyed going to the Halle concerts, the guy who conducted and hopefully gave us some understanding of music was Arthur Percival, I think he was the leader of the orchestra at that time. As an adult, I went to the Halle concerts many times when it was led by the marvelous John Barbirolli.
Other memories, Taylors sweet shop, asking teacher if you could have "the tickets" when we went to Sutherland Rd baths, ( 40 penny ones), the Brylcreem dispensing machine at the baths, filling up lousy dovetail joints with hot evil smelling fish glue! doing amazing things with oxygen and iron filings in the science labs, hating going to school dentist at Hatfield school, I can feel and taste that awful rubber gas mask as I type this!
Standing in the tram shelter at Firth Park to get the tram to the baths, and one tradition which has totally disapeared now, going to the Whit sings in Firth Park, all the different banners on display, whow, will have to stop, got finger ache!!!

I do indeed remember Fanny F standing on a stool- I started at Shiregreen only in my last few terms at school- Picture this I'm fairly tall and walked into assembly to see this woman towering above all of us, conducting like mad. Then she later got down from the stool- awesome woman. I think the teacher I was asking about was probably Mr Broadhead/hurst from Canada?
Also in my time was Mr Nichols- all the girls were in love with him and after I left school his wife taught me shorthand for a time.
As for Yvonne or maybe Elaine Nightingale, Tedwood, I think most of the boys had a crush on her (secret* she was the first girl with a bosom of any note)

Sorry pressed enter in error.
I had Miss F for all subjects for three years, we never "got on" and had many a set to.
We not only went to Sutherland Rd. baths but before Sutherland Rd. we went to Attercliffe baths. When we came out of Sutherland Rd. we went into the greengrocers and bought a scrubbed carrot for a penny, don't forget sweets were on ration so we had to make do.
With reference to Taylor's shop was it the one on the corner of Heather Rd and Foxglove Rd.??? It's such a long time ago I cannot remember, if it was in that location it was bombed on the first night of the blitz.
Anyone out there who went to Shiregreen School-
1936 to 1945.
Cheers, Cynthia, Ontario, Canada.

Hi! Cynthia, yes, you have the right location for Taylors sweet shop, they used to sell marvelous things like sherbert flying saucers, gob stoppers, licorice pipes and lengths, licorice root (yuk!) ice lolly,s for a penny, I could go on.
They would also have fireworks in November, names which have now disapeared like Brocks, Lion, Standard, all British names which have now given way to ( made in China)
Just before we came to live in Scarborugh in 2002, a reunion was held of old pupils, I didnt find out about this untill after the event, but was told Mr Lamb was there at the grand old age of 90 plus. Rather sad if it is true that the school is to be demolished to make way for the new.

We had a Mr Tyndale, (not sure of the spelling) for tech drawing and we were unlucky that the metal work teacher had left, he was not replaced during our time at school, so we never had any metal work, which I always regretted.
Mr Yates the science teacher was OK, I liked him.

I was Head Boy in 1959 we got the last laugh on fanny Fincham
cos we sawed off the stool legs, our woodwork teacher was Mr. Loy. The sports teacher was Mr. Clayton. if you want to see some photos I have posted a couple on the Friends reunited site and there are some that others have put on. Anyone remember the Belgium trip in 1955? by the way little malc your not as little as your name suggests are you?

Hi! bits, I was head boy in 1958 along with Lynne Vessey head girl. My pop had a mate called Malcolm Grace, he was 6ft tall and an athlete, he became big Malc to the family and of coarse I was refered to as little Malc, im just under 6ft myself, so You are right, its probably not an acurate description.
The Belgium trip brings back happy memories, I had a crush on Pat Bradford who also went on the trip, nuff said!!
Do you remember the coach driver being introduced to us as " uncle Sim?" I can remember something being said about a prize for anyone who learned a bit of Flemish.
I still have a photo of the S.U.T. coach being lifted onto the ferry with a crane, no rollon rolloff ferries then.
The teacher name I cant remember is the youngish female we all fancied a bit! fancy not being able to remember her.
I still can see her doing the hand jive at some do we had in the hall.
Can you remember some kid who was drowned in the quarry? and we all had a lecture about not playing there, good thing it was filled in.

The song was 'Down in Demerara'

Ah happy days!

Mr Broadhead
Mr Lawton - books had to be backed in good quality brown paper from Kenyons (some tried the back of wallpaper - not a good idea) the label had to be five and a half inches by 3 and a half inches - the only teacher who made this rule!!
Miss Bennett
Mr Smith was the Head although I remember Mr Lamb

I left and went to Hinde House to take GCE exams - horrid place - nothing like good old Shiregreen

Remeber the song:

Our infant days are ended now
Our early childhood done

etc
