View Full Version : Sharing Telewest connection between 2 PCs
A.B.Yaffle 06-03-2006, 14:59 We've recently got telewest broadband and they have provided us with a Motorola Surfboard SB5101E modem. The modem has an ethernet connection and also a USB connection. I've tried running 2 computers off the modem, but it only seems to work if there is one connected to the modem. Does anyone know if it should be able to run on 2 computers, or do I have to buy a seperate router?
carcrash 06-03-2006, 15:05 I think you need a router. I was looking into doing the same think a few months ago
yes you need to buy a router.
Make sure you buy a "cable" router as they are different to the adsl routers you use for BT and phonelined broadbands.

Presumably you will also have to by wireless network cards for each PC also?

Only if the OP wants to network them wirelessly, otherwise a couple of cat5 cables with RJ45's would be fine (and cheaper, and faster :))
isnt rj45 the telephone wire?
You would need a wireless router and wireless cards in pc for wireless!
Or Network cards and networked cables - cabled to the router.
Personally i would go wireless!
RJ45 is an ethernet connector, RJ11 is a phone connector
Cat 5, Cat 5e or Cat 6 is ethernet cable

A.B.Yaffle 06-03-2006, 17:30 Thanks for the replies. We have network cards in both pc's, as we have recently networked them to share a Bulldog connection. Looks like I'll have to buy another router then, and I only bought the ADSL modem/router a short time ago! :(
It's far from perfect in performance terms but if you're using Windows you can do Internet Connection sharing.
It worked fine for me using three wireless networked PCs, one connected to the modem via the Ethernet cable. That PC also had a wireless LAN adaptor plugged in to USB, and my laptop and another PC ran USB wireless LAN adaptors as well.
Performance was OK but when I upgraded to a proper router performance was much better.

What model is your ADSL modem/router? You might be able to plug the blueyonder cable modem into it.
As Joe said above you can do Internet Connection Sharing if both PC's are XP but for performance wise - you need a router.
I'd go with the Netgear D834G if you can find it in a local shop or online.
Performance wise it is brilliant and both of our computers at home have lightning fast internet access running our internet connection through it.
Give me a shout if you buy one and I'll be more than glad to help you with any problems if you have any with it - which I doubt you will as it has a very quick setup system to use.
ICS is fine, I run 3 Dell PC's on blueyonder. I don't use a router, as I find that perfomance is fine.
You will need a router if you want to go wireless, but if not than you just need a network hub, RJ45 cables and a couple of network cards.
PS
Blueyonder 10mb is great, thanks for the upgrade Telewest:hihi:

Agreed. A router is not required. ICS under Windows is very poor though.
We have a box with 2 NIC's. 1 Connected to BY, the other to a switch, which then connects to our other PCs (3 desktops and a laptop). The PC connected to the modem is running 602LanSuite (with AVG - which it interacts with perfectly) to share the connection, ZAP is also installed.
