Hi all,

I know I haven't been a member on here for long, so maybe this is a lot to ask.

For the first time ever I am running the Race for Life  as part of the Girlguiding Sheffield team (www.sheffieldguides.org.uk / www.girlguiding.org.uk if you don't know what we are!).

It takes place on Sunday June 4th here in Sheffield at Don Valley (2 races) but there are races up and down the country (see www.raceforlife.org for more details).

We need to raise as much money in sponsorship as possible to help out this good cause. I'm sure that we've all been, or know someone who has been affected by cancer at some point in their lives.

If you could take the time to sponsor me, or someone else that you know who is running I'm sure we would all appreciate it. You can donate online (go on, do it NOW!!!) using my page www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/samanthajessop or using a friend's page if you know they have one.

Remember to tick the GIFT AID box if you are a UK taxpayer. This way Cancer Research UK can claim an extra 28p per £1 from the taxman at no extra cost to you.

PLEASE DIG DEEP!!!!

Mods - if this could be put as a sticky I'd really appreciate it, this isn't just some dumb sponsorship - this is cancer research.

Thanks

Samantha

P.S. You can now sponsor our team at www.raceforlifesponsorme.org/girlguidingsheffield

I didn't realise you could sponsor participants online. That's very good, the missus will be pleased!

Have just sponsored you:D

I had an 8 hour operation 6 weeks ago to remove cancerous lymph nodes from my neck. So the race is out for me this year but I will be doing it next year!

Good luck and well done:thumbsup:

It is women only, yes. There is a men's race for bowel cancer, but this isn't quite as popular - www.runformoore.org less races. It may be women only, but it is so popular - hence why Sheffield has 2 races this year!

they have to register their own web space, it is very easy to set up - see www.raceforlife.org for details - you don't have to do anything really - it's all set up ready - you just choose what you want!

It's a damn good cause and I'm proud of myself for doing it!!!

I'm debating on this at the moment ..... My mum was on about us doing it last year but nothing came of it. Maybe tomorrow when her internet goes live she'll be browsing the website :hihi: although this year her and dad'll be on their jollies.

I can just about tackle a 45-min walk to work and back, not sure about 5km :help:

you'll have to be quick - I know that the morning Sheffield race is now full and I don't think there's many afternoon places left!!

Hi guys,

I'm well up for this. Is there a set time & place for it? I've heard rumours about it but don't know any details...

Help!

well i've just been volunteered to run "relay for life".
15 person teams running for 24hours to raise money for cancer relief.
obviously as race for life is a sexually biased event that shouldn't be condoned, i've been coerced into this event.

I am running this too!!  I am running on the 25th June, at Doncaster. I went for a run yesterday and managed about 2 miles (the race is 3) so I've still got a bit of training to do, but I know I can do it!! It's for the best cause!! I have a target of £200, and have reached £145 so far..If anyone would like to help towards the £200, please donate, even if it's a pound! Every pound will make a difference to someone :) Thank you x x

I too will be having a nice walk around Attercliffe on 4th June!

This is not a plug to get my sponsorship up (but feel free) but please everyone make sure you sponsor some lady doing this race

Cancer research does some wonderful work that could not be possible without events like this and people like you sponsoring events like this

I’m doing the race this year for the 5th time but I lost my dad last year to this terrible disease so this year will be hard but for me even more important

So final plea, no need to necessarily sponsor me but please sponsor some lady

Thanks

I have three daughters running on sunday am, i am amazed at how they have trained, running round mosborough and rother valley lakes, they are not athletic ladies but great effort has been put in by all of them, one actually gos on holiday to france after the race! good luck to you all i am very proud of all of you

Just to be different, I'm running in Portsmouth, with my flatmate.

If any kind person wants to take pity on us, we're only £40 towards our £100 target! As that's between 2 of us, it's pretty shameful, so if anyone was going to donate to a friend, on or off here, consider giving it to a random instead? (I know it all goes to the same place, but humour a pair of poor students?!)

I have also been training at Rother Valley. I think it's 3 miles around both lakes, and the Race For Life is 3.1 miles, I can just about make it round I think :)

Well, I've just got home.. my legs ache but I DON'T CARE!!! I've raised about £350 just on my own, plus about £150 team sponsorship which is FANTASTIC! Thanks to all of you that have donated - there is still time!

think i managed it in about 40 mins but it's quite hard to time it, as you don't really get started until you're out of the stadium as it's that busy!!

Hope you all had a good time :)

Hi
I came last in yesterdays race but I was carrying a small child most of the way round. I think my daughter was also the youngest competitor at 18 months.

Thanks to everyone who gave her a big cheer both as we started (late as she need a nappy change at the start) and as we finished in last place. She was brilliant and even though my feet are now killing me we are near to our target of £500, as everyone at her nursery has sponsored her.

Anyway if you are reading this and have yet to sponsor anyone then please sponsor the youngest competitor, Annabel Ibbotson who was running in memory of her Nannan Pauline who died whilst I was pregnant.

Thanks again it was a great atmosphere.
Cheers
Rachel

Hi,
Not asking for sponsorship, just wanted you all to know that there is another Cancer Research UK event being held in Sheffield this year that everyone can paticipate in regardless of gender or age .

The event is " Relay for Life " and involves continous movement around a track by teams over a 24 hour period ( jog, walk, hop, whatever ! ).

It's designed to be a fun event with a serious mission, so it's not a race.

Dates : Sat 10th and Sun 11th June 12.00 noon to 12.00 noon
Venue : Sheffield United Football Academy, Shirecliffe. Facilities available.
Organiser : Jean Housley 2509090, 0777 649 2980

You can find more details on what the event is like on the Cancer Research web site ( can't post the url - this is only my second jot on the forum.)

You don't have to be in a team to come along and support the event - all very welcome .

Congrats to all involved in " Race for Life " - keep up the good work !
