View Full Version : How to fill your day when unemployed?
Red Head 06-04-2004, 15:16 Hi all
Been waiting to start job now for 6 weeks but been told it will be another further 4 weeks or so. On minimal Jobseekers so no cash to enjoy my free time. Any suggestions as to free fun, educational, interesting things to do around Sheffield and South Yorkshire. Any suggestions welcome as am very bored. Only so much daytime telly a girl can watch.
Cheers
jackthedog 06-04-2004, 15:31 If you've got a job lined up, just use the time until you start to sleep till midday, catch up on Neighbours twice a day and just take it easy!
Cos you'll not be able to once you start work again eh!
Tyto Alba 06-04-2004, 15:43 Well Red head, why don't you try some voluntary work. There are thousands of things that need doing....and it's a good way to make contacts and meet people.....can lead to other things. A lot of schemes will pay expenses.
Sheffield University careers service might be a good first stop.....they should be able to put you in touch with people who can give you a list of opportunities. Otherwise try ringing the Town Hall.
If you're feeling saintly you could do some voluntary work?
Tyto Alba 06-04-2004, 15:49 Well you don't need to be Mother Teresa.
Sometimes in life it is not what you know, but who you know.
Believe me, voluntary work is a good way to make some excellent contacts that can often lead to something more interesting. Plus, it looks great on your CV.
So it doesn't mean you are a bleeding heart or anything. It just shows that you have the initiative to get up off your a*se and get out there.
Another mug suckered into the JSA (Job Seeker's Allowance) eh?! Sorry but I am more than a little bitter and upset about my experience in 1997 when I was forced to go on it....
For reasons I'd rather not go into as I find it all traumatic to discuss even to this day.
designbunny 06-04-2004, 19:18 Come and help out with Sheffield Wildlife Trust! There's always lots going on, from helping out in our offices to working with our sites team on one of our 9 nature reserves. Its a great way to meet people.
Visit our Community Cafe day on Thursday for tasty food + to find out a bit more about what we do. Phone 0114 263 4335
aim'n'Mark 06-04-2004, 20:45 Why not try a lerndirect course or something like that. You can do that from home or go into one of their centres. It will give you something to do...
ask an advisor at the job centre about course's available.......

So you were forced to go onto JSA - have to say I've never heard of that before. Did you not consider going out and getting a job? That way you couldn't have been 'forced' onto it :loopy:

Whilst the sun seems to be shining most days just enjoy it! Sleep until late, get up and go for a jog, visit any friends that don't work or meet any that do on their dinner. Watch films and listen to music without worrying about being late for anything or getting up for anything.
If all else fails, throw sweaty betties at your neighbours
I wish I was still at school, I used to love Summer holidays :(
Pardon my ignorance, but what the flip's a sweaty bettie?
Get a handful of bog roll, run it under that tap and squeeze it into a ball. Very immature, but great fun :)
Redhead - we're almost related!!!
the librarys the place to go....loadsa free things to do...and if you get bored of Sheff ones, jump a train somewhere (easily avoiding paying the fare of course) and explore other libraries
man, I love libraries.
Funky Dave 07-04-2004, 18:55 Visit all the museums.
Alternatively, why not start writing a book? It doesn't need to be for publication. At 3 pages per day you'd have a pretty substantial document by the time you started working
cazzaworld 08-04-2004, 13:30 Do some agency work for a bit, wages + the job may be poor but hey it gets you out of the house. Also you get paid weekly too.

Moron.
The reason I was forced is because no employer would give me the time of day when I was applying and doing all the legwork myself with regard to looking for work, due to me being disabled, and at the time I'd just finished College and because I wanted desperately to work, I had to come off disabled benefits so I had to go on JSA in order to A) have a means of income and B) supposedly get a job.... It did not work out though cos the stupid muppets at the job centre don't know what they're doing, all they care about is the figures, not whether they get the RIGHT job for their clients....
That is as much information as I am willing to share.
Babooshka 08-04-2004, 14:11 Hi Rich. Just out of curiosity is there anything out there that grabs you ? Is there anything in particular that you would really like to do ?

Anything involving computers really, except programming as I don't have the experience or qualifications, ideally I'd like something involving web site design as I enjoy doing that and would like to make a career out of it if possible,
Web site design is also something I have skills in (mostly self taught from books and experimentation) which I feel would be of benefit to any company, I am also prepared to start at the bottom and work my way up in a company, possibly becoming MD by the time I'm 40 ;)
Hi Rich,
Have you considered taking the initiative and developing you skills in the area of website development.
Create a porfolio of websites maybe?
Am sure most emoployers would like that ... and it shows that you're self driven and motivated.
Babooshka 08-04-2004, 14:55 It certainly does. This is not my area of expertise and I personally wouldn't know where to start in this field, but I reckon there are scores of people on this forum who could point you in the right direction. Perhaps you could PM a few people or bring it up when they are in the chat room. Jamie is right. Taking the initiative and being pro-active is the way to acheive your goals. If you are confident in your abilities, which it sounds like you are, and rightly so, then you should get out there and show people your work. Even if you have to start off doing some stuff for free then at least people would see your talent and word would get round ! Heck, you could be MD by the time you are 35 ! Get to work Mr !

No one is forced to claim JSA. When someone makes a claim to JSA they are told what their obligations & responsibilities are in order to remain eligible. Fail to meet these eligibility conditions & you lose the benefit. You disagree with this? Fair enough write to your MP & let him have your concerns but don't blame the jobcentre staff they don't make the rules.
Once you've been in receipt of JSA for 6 months then you become eligible for whole host of additional help like training courses & work experience.
If you've previously been in receipt of sick or disabled benefits then you'll be eligible for even more help & support from specialist advisers.
The help & support is there it's up to you to make use of it. Unless that is you want someone to tap you on the shoulder & offer everything on a plate. Loser.
LMAO @ "help and support" ... in my experience I have found that there only concern is getting you off JSA ... and not helping you to find appropriate work.
There idea of "help and support" is forcing you off JSA and in to any old (crap) job ... they're not at all interested in working WITH you and planning out how to develop your career and find the work that you really want.
So yeah ... there is plenty of "help and support" ... for you Rich :-)
But if you really care about your career ... you are much better off taking control yourself and just take from them what you consider to be of use to further your own aims.
Babooshka 08-04-2004, 19:19 Escafeld. Loser...a term generally felt BY one who deems to feel as such oneself...and needs the reassurance of insult to spur him on. This is not the place for unnecessary insults! Insults are also used due to an inability to find innappropriate wording due to lack of education !!!!

Ugh, the Disability Employment "Advisor" they gave me was worse than useless, I told him I wanted Retail work and he started looking for WAREHOUSE work! Muppet! After I specifically told him I did NOT want to be hidden away in the warehouse, I wanted to be out there serving the public, which I had spent 2 years at college studying for and had achieved NVQs in.
And don't even get me started on the uselessness of the interviews I did manage to get, most of the time I ended up getting sent for interviews for jobs that had already been taken but not removed from the boards in the job centre!
Anyway last desperate attempt was going for a job up at Lane Top answering the phones in a Taxi place, arrived at the interview early, said who I was and why I was there, and they said "oh it's gone that job love, filled it 3 months ago", and I was like WTF?! So I went furiously marching straight back down the job centre, WTF is going on here I asked them, they of course feigned innocence, saying it was the company's fault for not telling them they'd filled the job, yet the Taxi place had told me it was the job centre's fault for not removing the want ad... And muggins here was caught in the middle! I'd just had enough of the retarded muppetry and went on a right rant at them!
So don't come bleating to me that you think I'm lazy and haven't made the effort! You don't know the half of what I've been through in search of employment, all because the system is a piece of crap!
