Never thought i'd have to say this but i'm afraid Niche is no more. We have been to court today to have the ASBO lifted but this was only allowed upon surrender of the licence and personal undertakings signed by myself and the other owners not to apply for any occasional licence or put anyone else up to apply for one. The opposition from the police to Niche was so fierce that we have had to bow to the inevitable and call it a day, a victory for the forces of law & order?

So that's it, I have worked for Niche for 10 years and it's been the most amazing time of my life, a fantastic privelige to have been involved in a clubbing legend. Niche was a one off that went its own way and did its own thing and the people who appreciated it were rewarded with times and experiences that they will never forget, the music, the people. the characters and the vibe were something special and I like many people will be proud to be able to say in years to come that I was there. Everybody will have their own memories of Niche Nightclub, take a moment to reflect on them and mourn the end of a clubland icon.

Finally my thanks to all the staff who worked their balls off for the club and most of them would have gladly paid us to be allowed to work there, their loyalty was one of the things that I will take a lot of pride from, and very finally to the customers whose support has been fantastic both in good times and bad. Thank you to everyone who sent letters and emails on our behalf, you made the place what it was, the most incredible, bizzare, mad, brilliant nightclub that you could wish for.

For all Niche wasnt my kind of club I do mourn it's passing. The clubbing scene in Sheffield is pretty dire at the best of times and with the closure of Niche it is only gonna get worse. There are precious few venues and with the closure of niche the variety and diversity of the sheffield scene is only gonna decline further.
I salute you Malton for all the hard work you must have put in to the sheffield scene for the last decade. Good effort fella!

Have to agree. I didn't really like the music, and only ever went there a handful of times, but I had a laugh and I know there will be a load of people who will miss Niche.

i've personally never been and im not keen on the music, but it's never good when sheffield loses yet another dance music club.

sheffields nightlife is going stale, thank god for free parties

its a real shame to have a well known club thats known throughout the country close, the law has alot to do with it and unfortunately they have the strength to do this, many clubs in the city centre are under pressure why cant sheffield be like other cities as notts,manchester,birmingham,london,leeds have a fantastic club scene, sheffields becomming dry and boring.

Somebody else will open a club to replace it. Probably in the same building :rolleyes:

Niche brought about its own downfall unfortunately. I never went and cannot comment on what it was really like, but I have spoken to regular clubbers who say that they stopped going due to certain 'elements' who were allowed in.

although i havnt been to niche for the past 4 years ,i used to spend every weekend in there for about 2 solid years!! its a shame that a place that had such a powerful impact within the scene has had to come to an end!! but i hope all involved look at it as having had the best years instead of looking at how it has ended. at least the place had achieved many successful years and will always be talked about in many years to come, it will never be forgotten:thumbsup:

I never did get to Niche .. sounds like you have gathered an armful of memories though !

Let's acknowledge the fact that there are "elements" in most clubs and IF this is the reason that Niche is now not allowed to re open, then this could happen t any club !

I've read this a few times and there are some things that don't add up. The ABSO could have been lifted but only under certain conditions, those being (to quote the above post) "surrender of the licence and personal undertakings signed by myself and the other owners not to apply for any occasional licence or put anyone else up to apply for one". It seems that those conditions were not met and therefore the ASBO has not been lifted but this was not "inevitable" as there were conditions under which the ASBO could have been lifted.

I'm only going on what has been posted here as I haven't found anything else about the conclusion of this case anywhere else yet but it seems that some of the undertakings which were required by the court before the ASBO could be lifted seemed to apply not to the Niche club itself but to certain individuals involved with the Niche club. Therefore, were the police really opposed to Niche regardless of who owned it and how it was managed or were they opposed to certain individuals who own and have managed Niche? Could Niche have re-opened if it was sold to new owners and given new management? If the current owners of Niche tried to open a new club would the police oppose any licence application? The answers to those questions could tell you whether Niche was really closed by "the forces of law & order" or was closed by the current owners of Niche.

I think the tunes did it for everyone. very much dowt they will ever be a place again thats got a sound system like niche did

:cry: I woz totally gutted wen I heard that Niche had closed 4 good...I really dint think it wud!! & I hate it wen people comment on how bad it woz wen they neva even went! Niche had the best atmosphere, the best music, the best Djs & the best people & I can't believe Im neva gonna get 2 go again...it woz a 1 off & there's neva gonna B anywhere else like it! Im just glad Im 1 of the many people who did get 2 experience it & who has got some of the best memories from it!!

I have been a browser for some time and get the gyst that Niche threads can sometimes create a lengthy argument/discussion (delete where appriate!)

I was a regular at Niche but would just like to say that I can also be found in Republic, on West Street and dare I admit in Kingdom..

Anyone that went to Niche did so for the music and yeah I will be the first to admit that it could sometimes be a little dodgy but you where always gaurenteed to have a good laugh and really feel like you'd had a good night out (Oh so my feet used to tell me afterwards!)

It is a shame that Niche has closed down as a many people who never got to experience a Niche night never will and I know that there is a hype at the moment about this new night at Adelphi but I doubt it will be the same as Niche. :P

For me was and alway will be a memory thatll stik wid me 4 ages.
It was the best club these sides has seen.
We made loads of friends that wer frm all over the country that used to cum ther even frm as far as scotland. It was a place to meet.
No club will ever be wat niche was lets hope the new place lifts off wer niche left off.
as for drugs :gag: thats everywer these days ppl that think they wer only at niche needs thier head testing :loopy:

i was proper gutted when i heard Niche had been shut down. Now that lplace holds special memories for me (well wat i can remember anyways :hihi: )

i have read all the posts on here and i have to agree with most of the things said. Its goin to be a very hard to replace a club as good as Niche, but lets hope the Adelphi nite goes off with a bang, get saturdays on go as well and have a niche reunion, playin classic niche tunes from the past. Now that would be a night to remember.

i am glad to say i had the niche experience and i am lucky enough to have the picture's to look back on.:)

drugs never bothered us, as we were always pilled up anyway, just the grumpy attitude from a lot of people.

the scene stagnating had nothing to do with these two clubs shutting down.

niche to me was the best club ive been because 1)the ppl go for the bassline- they live for the bassline.

2) you only get grief if you go with an attitude
3) it had the best most powerful atmosphere out of any club i have ever been- anywhere.
4) you get to know a lot of mad ravers

if you dont love speedgarage/ bassline house then you would hate it and you would end up stood there miserable as sin but if you love it you would be flyin on the buzz of it for the whole week after!!! :love: :love: :love:

There probably were a lot of good raves etc but i was too young to experience them. I started with the niche vibe when i was 17. before that im afraid 2 say i was a **cough wow bird**** (ok did i jus admit that lol) but i did enjoy it at that time. i wasn't aware of the rave scene or even niche seen back then. jus call me naive:)
so i guess i feel strongly about it cos it was my 1st experience of underground clubbin. (if u call it that:) )

thing is- and this is what gets me mad- people can be moody in any club- have u ever been to hed kandi b4?? now id say u were more likely to get pinged there mate. a lOT of attitudes.

niche was always a night what YOU made it. If you act the big man and u aint then u will get a scouse smile or worse. (scouse smile = bladed) however- if u dance without being pretentious or plain stupid (banging into ppl etc) then u should have been fine.

nb- please apply this to any nightclub worldwide

rubbish - i've been to plenty of parties(free) ie DIY, Smokescreen where you'd be hard pushed to find a collection of people more off their heads and theres never any trouble.

in my experience, most people off their faces are friendly, but if they're not its because they've got an attitude in the first place!

1 Every one that goes to Niche takes drugs - Wrong I have been going over 7 years and have NEVER taken any drug
2 Its full of chavs that dont have jobs etc - Wrong, I have a brilliant paid job with the local government

i have to totally agree with you on on that. Infact on it all. It annoys the hell outta me that people judge wen they haven;t got a clue what they are talkin about!

Just like to say a few words about Niche and the whole thing that surrounds it. I agree with a lot of the things that have been said on the forum on both sides of the debate, Niche could be a moody place sometimes and there were always people with some kind of point to prove but we did work hard to weed these types out or at least keep them under control. When I started work there it was the body builder types, no shirts, pouring with sweat who were the major pain in the arse, in the later days it was wannabe gangsters lurking in the corners trying to look hard. Niche was never a 'fluffy pink' tree huggers paradise but it never tried to pretend that it was, I've seen the clientele change greatly over the years and the reputation of the place attracted as many as it repelled but I saw my job as running the place on behalf of the people who loved the place rather than the people who hated it. As a business we did welcome everyone but we could always tell the ones who wouldn't last five minutes, it wasn’t everybodys cup of tea but as with anywhere else if you don't like it you don't have to go back. For the people who did love it and there were plenty of them they found a unique place where they could both belong and be themselves, the club was based around its music policy (now widely imitated), agreed the music might not have been to everyones taste but how many nightclubs have created and given their name to a genre of music. I know the term ‘Niche tunes’ annoys some people but this term grew from customers trying to find the records, and that just became a generic description for the stuff being played as it couln’t be pinned to one particular style.
Niche and its music are well known the length and breadth of the UK, I’ve received correspondance from Scotland to London and from Swansea to Skeggy No advertising was done in these places, people just came! Niche never set out with an agenda to create any paticular type of vibe, the customers created it for themselves and as such Niche Nightclub was a reflection of life in general It reflected the Sheffielders who created it, it could be rough but it could be very warm hearted and it was always a laugh at the end of it all. IMO Sheffield can be proud of itself for having created something so unique and given it to the world, I think it’s right up there with Jarvis Cocker, stainless steel and the view from the top of East Bank Road. Love it!

What (in your opinion) were the main differences between the two. I went to Roxy's quite a few times but have never been to Niche.

i have to agree with you. i used to go all the time about 5 years ago and u had a wicked time due the fact you got to know everyone. Then i didn't go as much and everytime i went i felt it weren't how it used to be. I still buzzed off goin though don't get me wrong but i would love a reunion from back then. if anyone from stannington, hillsboro, parson X, and killamarsh recognise my name then get urself off to Adelphi on the opening night and i should see you there.

I loved Niche it had a real atmosphere there was a buzz about it where I always experianced friendliness so I do not understand where people get this image of a place filled with attitude from. Will miss Niche but will definatly come & support Adelphi and I always thought Chris Bailey woz fit.......

when ever i went, id meet loads of strangers who'd just randomly come up to you and introduce themselves. which i thought was great and made me feel a whole lot better about the place i heard such crap about.

scariest niche moment for me was when i was on bottom dancefloor with a friend, boppin away like you do, when 3 huge geeza's came up (we were next to the big speakers that were protected by cages) shoved us out of the way and stood at the side, staring everybody out, basically taking over down stairs as if they ruled. they didnt half look mean aswell. just thought id share!

Loads of scary/mad moments

One that sticks in my mad was being upstairs on the balcony bit and this wierd guy came over soaked in sweat. He took his top off and gave it to me to hold, not nice as it was wet but then went and told the bouncers that I nicked it from him. Good for me though was that I knew the bouncer and he came over laughing his head off and cuffed me round the ear for pinching this poor guys sweaty shirt.

Flyers and Advertisement boards are around already. The names who are dj'ing are the ones from niche. apart from the skelton Bro's.

If anyone wants to know the real TRUTH about the NICHE CLOSURE CONTACT ME who developed the niche for 11 years till the end.

My opinion is that it was a racially motivated attack on a fantastic multicultural venue. I know the FULL STORY warts and all. Police comment, snide remarks from them on the night which proved my thoughts.

What does (OPERATION RE-PATRIATION) mean to anyone with a brain.
That was the name of the police operation on the night. WHERE DID THAT NAME COME FROM?

I can be found at the Limit Nightclub which I am slowly turning around into another successful venue. We have the recipe all we need is police co-operation.

Hey there all you niche heads- we went on Friday to the Adelphi and as soon as I got there i was greeted by the whole outside bit caged off then:) there were two coppers on door- I had my whole hand bag (gucci) emptied, searched and I was also body searched. By the thorough and decent door staff. I was impressed cos it makes the nite safer= more enjoyable. :)
it wasnt as good as the reflective night but it will catch up,. I thought plug was a much better venue. :)
