tonygonzalez 03-03-2006, 08:55 PM Hi all!
I'm just about to finish my baccalaureate and one of my further options is Sheffield Univ. I was wondering what does the clubbing scene look like in sheffield? I'm kinda into funky, vocal, deep, latin house but I also like to dance my ass off to drum'n'bass and things like that. I've got a CD from Knowledgemag with 1Xtra, starring jungle drummer, l double and so from Tuesday Club. Are there any really neat clubs? what music do you get? what are the prices? I would be extremely grateful for your help...cheers!
BTW
my other option are manchester and essex (in colchester) any ideas how does the clubbing scene look like there?
Cheers!
jen13kd 03-03-2006, 09:53 PM hey up - sheffield is one of the best locations in the country for night life. there's something to suit everyone's taste.
There's a new night started at sutra nightclub (charter square) every friday. It is fantastic. They play all types of house from vocal uplifting to dirty underground!
You should come up and see what its like - you'll not want to leave! x x x:thumbsup:
poimaster 04-03-2006, 12:17 AM Welcome to the forum tony!
I can definitely recommend Sheffield....i think jen13kd is being a bit over enthusiastic in his evaluation of the night life round here. There is a decent variety of nights to choose from....Tuesday Club is a must...they always put on a good show. Also check out Urban Gorilla if you're into your breaks. As far as the D&B scene goes things have been a bit flat as of late...A few years ago you literally had a D&B nite 5 or 6 nights a week. Nowadays you're lucky if theres 2! I cant comment on the "funky, vocal, deep, latin house" scene...really NOT my bag.
If you went to Manchester you would definitely have a better selection of nights to choose from but the downside is that its not half as chilled out or friendly as Sheffield. I would say Sheffield should be your first choice but then i would, Im biased.
If you do make it to Sheff give me a shout...ive got a few years worth of Knowledge & ATM cover cd's you're more than welcome to have copies of.
Unisol 04-03-2006, 09:05 AM The best club for diversity is http://www.the-plug.com - lots of good nights going on there
or http://www.thepinupclub.com/
or old faithfull http://www.gatecrasher.co.uk - although it's mostly commercial stuff like Hed Kandi now
I would disagree that Manchester is better than Sheffield for clubs. Leeds maybe, but not Manchester.
johnbradley 04-03-2006, 09:15 AM yep, ive lived in manchester, and the nightlife is excellent.
the downside is the aggro...too much violence!
sheffield's got a lively little scene and people are in general much friendlier:)
Agent Gypo 04-03-2006, 03:09 PM The best nights in Sheffield aren't really on that often, which is partyl what makes them so special in the first place.
Sheffield has far too many generic nights though, but again, I guess that just helps emphasise how great the great nights are....
tonygonzalez 05-03-2006, 01:57 PM Thanks for all the replies, you've been very helpful.
I've still got some questions - do the clubs you mentioned play 'strictly' electronic music? Or are they some commercial crap which is meant to attract the biggest possible number of people?
johnbradley - you said that manchester's clubbing scene is better - why? Manchester is also one of my options for further education so if you manage to convince me that it really is better then maybe i'll choose it.
agent gypo - what does it mean that sheffield has too many generic nights? Sorry, I'm still trying to improve my english but as you can see it's not so good :D.
Cheers!
Agent Gypo 05-03-2006, 04:59 PM agent gypo - what does it mean that sheffield has too many generic nights?
I don't want to incur the wrath of any promoters, but I think most people will agree there are far too many 'chart classics', student cheese and rn'b nights.
Modculture 05-03-2006, 07:11 PM Manchester has a very stagnated club scene - the same nights at the same places long past their sell by dates. I enjoyed ruffling some feathers there last year with "Outta Sight", and our braveness with the night (eg putting on the likes of Dave Haslam as a DJ at a 'mod' night) had the local paper describing us as a "breath of fresh air" to the local club scene.
But we were in a minority and the bars have more life than the bigger clubs in Manchester. Sheffield has a better atmosphere out and about and more interesting nights - and it's a much cheaper night out. As someone who has lived and promoted in both cities, I'd say Sheffield is far more progressive.

jen13kd 05-03-2006, 07:24 PM exactly, sheffield is the place to be - love dust at sutra is very different to other clubs, it's all about fun - not about pulling crowds in. No commercial music played here, just fantastic funky loved up house!
fnkysknky 05-03-2006, 08:03 PM Well we just had the Valve Soundsystem Tueday Club event last night with Roni Size, Dillinja, Pendulum etc. then we've got DJ Sneak at Hustle this week, Dave Clarke at UG at end of month then Deep Dish and Adam Freeland at UG next month so Sheffield isn't looking too bad at the moment :)
BennyBlanco 05-03-2006, 09:11 PM Spot on mate. I feel no need to go clubbing anywhere else, excluding London of course.
The Tuesday Club
Urban Gorilla
Phonetics
Scuba (please come back soon)
Pin-Up Club
Love Dust
Plug Fridays
..... cover all the sounds and scenes that I find appealing.

Ahh me too. Hope to see baby beatbox added to that in the future.
tonygonzalez 05-03-2006, 11:19 PM Well I'm glad to hear all of this! It seems that Sheffield is really worth studying in, and since you've mentioned that it's cheaper than Manchester then I think I'll choose Sheff.
I'm really impressed with: 'Roni Size, Dillinja, Pendulum'! ****ing hell! Although the club scene in Poland, where I live, is quite 'young', we do get some stars from time to time: chus & ceballos, james zabiela etc. But we don't sem to get some foreign d'n'b artists and therefore I'll be more than glad to check out the nightlife in Sheffield :D.
Cheers!
Agent Gypo 06-03-2006, 01:36 PM I sincerely urge every forum member to go to the next C90 night. These boys blow everything else in Sheffield out of the water at the moment.
An acid techno night wouldn't go amiss either. Big Ron, Andy Driver etc... if you're out there, bring back Jackhammer!
Kthebean 06-03-2006, 01:42 PM I would say with your music tastes you'll be more than alright in sheffield :)
I have had an ace week at Tuesday CLub and then Valve on Saturday.
It would be far better to live in Sheffield than to live in Manchester, in my opinion. Also, if there is a one off night that you want to go to in Manchester, its easy enough to get the first train back in the morning.
welchiewelch 06-03-2006, 04:27 PM There's a lot of diversity in Sheffield and a lot of good nights. Also the place is a lot friendlier than many a city i've lived in / visited.
Avoid the crap and you'll find plenty of nights to suit your tastes. Ask around when you get here too. Word of mouth is a good barometer here.
I can personally recommend Phonetics. Changed my life. ;) I was into soft rock before.

Unisol 06-03-2006, 04:56 PM you missed out on the best ever all time club tho - bed (RIP)
Not forgetting the Arches in the very early GC days (pre-trance and all that malarky)
T'was the best!!
brummieade 06-03-2006, 05:33 PM the arches....yeah heard about that place - some mates went once to some sort of psy trance nite - cant remember what it was called tho....apparently was good....not quite sure i could have handled moshers and hippies on pills - think it would have sent me under!!!!
Bully_Beef 06-03-2006, 05:37 PM You're all forgetting the best club ever ever ever, which was NYSushi at the Unit   :partyhat:

No, we used to go when Gatecrasher first came to Sheffield - around 1995/6'ish??
i.e. before GC turned poo.
'Trash' also used to be a legendary night (for those who can remember)

what did crasher play before then? i started going to GC in the lotherton hall era - 98/99 purely because of the age factor.... back in the days of tongey and oakey when he was a decent dj..... oh how times change!!!!
ash-uk 06-03-2006, 11:20 PM which is a good night out on Tuesday night?

Thanks for mentioning Hustle fnkysknky.
Over that last 2 years I dont think any event has consistently brought to Sheffield as many quality guest DJs as Hustle, with the exception of Urban Gorilla. (well done Deeep Dish booking)
Graeme Park, Audiowhores, Norman Jay, Who Da Funk, Danny Rampling, NASTYDIRTYSEXMUSIC, John Julius Knight, Joey Negro, DJ Spen, Kerri Chandler.........
Its an event that city's like Leeds and Manchester are dying for . Indeed Manchester's main house night Angel Deelight closed recently.
Sorry to get on my soap box but its a typical Sheffield thing to knock , or in this case, ignore what you've already got.
thanks again fnkysknky
oh and yes its DJ Sneak this Saturday for our 2nd birthday.
Agent Gypo 07-03-2006, 03:41 PM The best venue in Sheffield was Arches. Headcharge was immense there, and there's nothing around now to touch it really.
juliunc90 07-03-2006, 04:15 PM I sincerely urge every forum member to go to the next C90 night. These boys blow everything else in Sheffield out of the water at the moment.
thanks for the kind words. if anyone's interested there's one coming up this saturday 11th march. see this thread for thee details:

juliunc90 07-03-2006, 04:23 PM not to everyone's taste i hasten to add, but that doesn't mean we're elitist- just trying to put on something we consider a little more interesting/diverse.
props go out to www.singingknivesrecords.co.uk for bringing some exceptional underground/outsider live-based music to this little city of ours.
plenty of stuff's going on, its all about knowing which stones to look under that's all...
Bully_Beef 07-03-2006, 05:00 PM plenty of stuff's going on, its all about knowing which stones to look under that's all...
I second that. Sheffield's official "listings" don't always look as impressive as those of Manchester or Leeds (though I have to say they have done recently, with that massive DnB mulchdown at the weekend, Sneak at Hustle, Klashnefkoff at Phonetics, recloose, Larry Heard, Alice Russell at Plug etc. etc. etc.) but if you're truly into partying you can explore the scene and find loads of good underground nights. I've been here nearly 7 years and there are still cool nights and soundsystems that I haven't got round to checking out.
:partyhat:
unuspromulti 07-03-2006, 11:53 PM Theres a lot for certain tastes as has been said but who said GC1 does trance? Je pense pas, Nu-Crasher's the only night they put on and thats monthly. Tonight in fact, maybe im just a lil miffed I couldnt find anyone to go with :(
Couple of nights on at DQ on Fitzwilliam St to keep an eye on though
Bacala 08-03-2006, 12:49 AM You're all forgetting the best club ever ever ever, which was NYSushi at the Unit   :partyhat:
bloody hell yeah what happend to Sushi?! I can't believe I forgot about them! I couldn't wait to get down there when I moved to Sheffield but within a year they started only doing the snow thingys then disappeared....
what happened? I must be well out of touch! :hihi:
tonygonzalez 08-03-2006, 03:38 PM Thanks for the replies...I think you've convinced me that Sheffield is really worth studying in.
Cheers to all! And remember - if you ever happen to see a guy dancing his ass off on the danceflor throughout the whole night with a big smile on his face - feel free to run up to me, drag me to the bar so that I can get you some vodka and have a nice chat with you :D.
Thanks a lot once again!

The Unit got closed down then turned into Corporation so they were left venue-less.
spyro2000 08-03-2006, 04:37 PM NY Sushi was a legend in Sheffield. Unit 'was' in my opinion the best club in Sheffield. Not only for NY Sushi, but for its other nights like Smarties, Skool disco etc. It was a sad loss when it closed. Corporation is nothing in comparison.
Bully_Beef 08-03-2006, 04:47 PM The Unit got closed down then turned into Corporation so they were left venue-less.
Yeah, but it hobbled round a few other venues like the NCPM, The Ski Village & Bed for the best part of a couple of years, and then disappeared. I'm saying why?

You knows it.
Hip-hop room at Skool Disko was the bomb

Well it didn't have a proper regular venue any more and to be fair it didn't really work in any of the other intermittent venues did it? I dont think it lasted more than a year after the the Unit closed. Real shame.

Crasher is actually making a return on 16th April supposedly. Not that I'm much of a trance fan but it would be good to see it running again instead of just the classics nights they keep wheeling out.
As for Sushi - used to love the parties up at the Ski Village. I remember one of the last ones (possibly the last) with the UG tent with the Stantons and Freeland - quality night. Anyone remember seeing MC Pitman there? That was amusing :)

DnB bores the sheet out of me :hihi:
the flyers were by the designers republic weren't they? I remember thinking before I moved to Sheffield that NY Sushi was a Warp night due to the similarity in the adverts/flyers only to get down the record shops in the city centre to be put right!
Sushi WAS Sheffield for me, the feel of it, the styles of music all mashed together and the cool kids all gettin on and gettin down...proper good
