Does anyone know why a metal crucifix has been erected outside the town hall?

Something to do with Easter?

Is it a CRUCIFIX, or just a cross?

To be fair, it is just a cross. Kinda crucifix-sized though, with a bit of red cloth draped around the 'arms'.

I'm a little suprised the city council has allowed it to be placed directly outside the town hall though. It looks like endorsement...

...but then again they did have quite a lot of eid decor. It could be a local policy of raising the profile of religous celebrations etc etc.

There;s another one that lights up on the hill overlooking Stocksbridge.
Does the one in town still have a million little lollipop sticks in sand at the base??

Blimey, you've just broken a childhood memory there mate! What were the lolly sticks for? Were you supposed to write something on them? Or, as was usual for lolly sticks in the seventies, did they just contain really poor jokes that deserved to be buried?

A bloke goes into a jewellers shop and tells the blonde girl behind the counter that he wants to buy a crucifix.

Certainly sir, says the blonde. Do you want a plain one, or one with a little man on it?

I'll get me coat :)

They have the cross/crucifix there every year, which, as an atheist I find quite imposing and innapropriate...

Actually, I take that back, but I'm not sure why, but it makes me feel uncomfortable, maybe because it's a very emotive and representative symbol that not all of us celebrate, or recognise.

Anyway, what is with those lolly sticks?!

the lolly sticks are to write your name on as a confession of your faith and as a form of lifting your name up in prayer. the cross has been there every year since i think the mid 70's although the current one is only a couple of years old.

on palm sunday the city centre churches meet around it to have a small service

every year I hope for some sort of Calvary Recreation thing to kick off and every year I am disappointed. Have to go and watch the passion of christ instead.

Dont knock the fact about the cross.. it won't be long untill we will be banned from having them anywhere.

I don't think they ever will be banned, except maybe in schools in some areas of the country where christian students are rapidly becoming a minority

Can't see why it would ever be banned.

In some schools where Muslim students outnumber Christians, Nativity Plays, assemblies etc have already been banished So who's to say that the crucifix as a symbol won't eventually be banned from some schools

In order for something to be banned.....someone has to ban it.

I know that sounds obvious but it is quite different from a secular school deciding not to display the cross.

I don't think there is any intention anywhere to ban the cross. It would be a sad day if we were to contemplate banning the cross, crescent or star.

It's already been discussed here, but certain religious symbols (including large crucifixes) have already been banned in French schools

We were, but France is only next door and we're both part of the EU, so who's to say we won't be next?

Maybe so, but Franklin D. Roosevelt never had to deal with the EU! :)
