i know this is more a personal choice but what are peoples views on mobiles out at the moment? the reason i ask is my cheap airtime ran out a couple of months ago so gon up to full price but under my insurance i can break the contract, so i have been looking for a new phone but they all seem rubbish at the moment, my mate got the nokia n70 but doesnt rate it (i think nokia are bringing too many out instead of concentrating on a decent one!!) ive seen the samsung zsumat has just come out isit any good??? what are your views on the best phones at the moment???
cheers

On normal network or 3G?
Normal network I still like the k750i or 800i (same phone)
On three I don't really know....

yeah iwas looking at the sonys but unsure.. never had 1 - problem is there is always a new phone coming out next month. Probably would go for the 3G with it been the latest thing

I'd not bother with 3G. Unless you need to download large amounts of data or do video calling, the pros don't outweigh the "cons". For browsing and simple email my 2.5G handset beat the 3G handsets Orange gave me to try. So they got sent back. The thing is that whilst 3G is quicker when it gets going, by the time it had started my 2.5G had finished. And don't even get me started on the (complete lack of) handover of voice calls when going in and out of 3G cells.
Stick with a good old 2.5G.

Go look at the Samsung i300
http://www.mobileshop.com/mobile-phones/o2/contract-mobile-phones/samsung-i300.php/

This is a top phone with a 3 gig hard drive!!!!
Or look at any T-Mobile deal at the moment on the flext tariff, om on the flext 35 its £35 a month but gives you £180 worth of credit to spend each month!!!

T-mobile is certainly who I'd go with at the mo. Their 40Mb/month included data makes Orange's £4/Mb charge look not just uncompetitive but disgustingly obscene. T-mobile are also doing free sat-nav on some of their MS Smartphones at the moment. Hope that offer continues until my contract's up for renewal!

Yeah, my contract's up for 6 month renewal next month as well, debating whether to upgrade as I've finally got used to my phone number.

Wouldn't mind a Bluetooth phone though as I've already got a dongle that I bought for my last phone.

I recently upgraded to a Sony Ericsson K750i and I absolutely love it. with a 1gb duo memory card its now a Mp3 player / radio / 2.2 Mpix camera / personal organiser / its light and compact, easy to use, loads of features, oh yeah and I can make calls on it.

I always said a mobile is a mobile and so long as you can make calls its all ya need, I was wrong and will never go back.

BTW I have a Sony Ericsson K500i (its little brother) FOR SALE, click the link down below! :)

samsung D500 or D600 is a superb phone. It has 90MB and a decent camera, and the D600 has a 2Mb camera and a card slot for even more music.

I spent a week in europe last year and took 200 pics with my D500 and they are great, still had room for loads more..

I've never been a fan of Sony Ericssons to be honest, I've had 2 in the last 2 years, the T300 and most recently the T610, and both were virtual bricks really as whenever I made outgoing calls to home or wherever, the people I were calling complained that they couldn't hear me, and often I couldn't hear them, being deaf, but the phones were marketed as being suitable for hearing aid wearers :loopy:

I've since gotten a Nokia 6101 on Voda contract last October (6 month contract's up for renewal end of April) and it works perfectly apart from crap signal in certain areas such as around my House.

I've got the samsung D500, so have loads of people i know, its a nice phone, camera is great, but they all agree that the text messaging is unbelieveably poor, it doesn't remember any new words you put in for more than a week. It doesn't have many symbols and it's awkward to write a message. My contract is up soon, i definitly wouldn't get another samsung just for that reason. Im not a great text fan but its sooooooooo annoying it's unbelievable!

That's my rant over!!!!

I got a Nokia 6670 Smartphone so that I can use TomTom and sat nav on mine, as well as usual camera, bluetooth, internet, email, movies, etc. With a nice 512 memory card.

Calm down dear!
Actually, there are 36 symbols available on the text messaging.
if you press the right hand side button until it says "#/"
you can scroll down 4 screens of 9 symbols each.

I have had Samsung, ericsson, sony-ericsson and Nokia phones, and they all work different, but I find nokia much the best system for texting.
But samsung is ok for me. I mostly use T9 and the only time it doesn't pick up a word is if I get the spelling wrong.

My contract has run out and I was going to get a nokia N70 next, but after using one and several smart phones, I realised it was a bit of a waste of money, as I have broadband internet available to me all the time apart from when I am driving anyhow.
Several of my mates have smart phones, and I feel that they are good as hybrid phone/pda but not great at being a phone. The next phone I will be interested in will be one with wifi as well as everything I can do on my D500.
So for the next few months I have opted to keep my Samsung D500, and I have signed up to a much cheaper contract, although when I have returned from my trip to hungary, I might change it to pay as you go.

don't listen to any of this! samsungs have the full range of symbols available as any phone.. i used to be of the "if it ain't nokia it can sick my balls" camp, but samsung phones soon changed that!

the D500 is a great phone.. i have a D600 now, but i think i prefer the UI of the D500.. 1.3mp camera (with a great flash), records video, bluetooth (that works, unlike on sony-ericssons), plus all your usual phone business..

whatever you do don't get a motorola - i can guarantee you will hate it within about 2 hours of using it..

samsung is where it's at.. don't bother with 3G, it's not worth it yet.. D600 is the business, but D500 is near as dammit..

I've got the Nokia 6680 (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_6680-1045.php). I think it's quite nice, 3G (and not in the slightest bit slow), MP3 player, separate memory card etc. But it's getting a bit old now, due for an upgrade in a couple of months.

I'd recommend it.

I have got the Z320i and I love it, the menu is a little more difficult to get round then the D500 (my last phone) but it has some great features, it has two cameras 2.0mp(front and back) it has a flash. also has a massive (for a phone 100mb memory, the photo quality is very clear and a lot brighter than the d500. the video recorder is good too. also has MP3/media player(salesman was unsure if it had MP3 player on it, but it has. it also has bluetooth and loads of other features.
IMO a great phone. the best I've had yet!!! also has something called imode which I believe is the latest internet thing to come out, it also has video streaming and video calling.

you get a lot of phone for your money!

The V3 Razr looks nice when it's shut, but the only reason anyone has bought this phone is due to the marketing. It has a tiny amount of built in Ram, so you can only load 1 or at the most 2 mp3 songs onto it, which is pretty pointless and a low res camera. The phone could have been lauched 2 or three years ago it's features and specifications are well out of date.

This is the absolute truth.

Sony-Ericssons - Horrendously slow camera & picture viewer, dodgy Bluetooth, crappy user interface.

Motorola - Too many problems to list here - try and get your hands on one to try it out, you will see what I mean. As muddycoffee says, they have a great marketing team. As a great philosopher once said - "Don't believe the hype".

Nokia - Where once they were kings, now they are the underdogs. They seem to have adopted a "quantity over functionality" policy.

Samsung - I only have experience of the E700, E330, D500 and D600 but can confidently say they are the best phones i have ever used. Massive amounts of memory (expandable by miniSD on the D600), mp3 ringtones, huuuuge bright colour screen, 1.3mp camera (2mp on the D600), Bluetooth that works effortlessly, good solid build. I could go on..

Well said oranjeboom,
in addition to your last comments, I would like to add that the media player on the D500 is better than one on the latest nokias, sv600, motorola as it plays any mp3 no matter what sampling rate it is encoded at, whereas nokia seems to only allow 128k ones. Several times I have been out with my mates for a drink and had the latest tune my band has recorded, but have been unable to transfer it to their different model phones because they couldn't play the file. My brother has an N70 and that couldn't play it either, and his previous nokia, also a g3 couldn't either.

I love the Sony Ericsson W800i. It's got a great camera and video, MP3 player and comes with memory card. It responds quickly and is easy to use and quite a funky design too. I used to love Nokias but woudln't go back now. I got a good dal with Vodafone on line, it's worth getting stop the clock on vodafone too for more for your money.

As I understand it, you buy the Tom Tom GPS receiver which comes with the software on a memory card. Pop the memory card in the phone, run the program and it uses Bluetooth to wirelessly connect to the GPS receiver and uses that to display the navigation information. They also have the same audible instructions as on dedicated devices.

The Samsung D600 is fantastic. Had one now for 3 months after being converted from Sony Ericsson (don't like the joystics on the new SE's).
The D600 has a 2 MP Camera, excellent video capture, leads included in box to watch your pictures and video on your own TV!!!!!
It sounds great, has an MP3 player, video editor, picture editor, music editor, PC software, has 90Mb memory inbuilt which can be upgraded via the Mini SD slot, battery life is long and its light and looks good...

Oh.. and it makes calls too I believe! ;-)

Hi Borough and Hotphil.
Usually you need a smartphone to run sat nav. And the most famous system is tom tom. What you need to buy is a bluetooth gps reciever, which gives you the coordinates of where you are from the satellite info. Your phone has to do the rest. You then obtain a sat nav system which can be tom tom or one of the others, which will work on your phone. You have to load the software onto your phone, sometimes on to the phone's internal memory or a ram card.
You have to be careful of which version you get as they are updated every so often, with up to date road maps.
