hi all a couple of months ago i got pulled up by the police, for having colour changing screen washers on my car, as i pointed out to the driver that i bought them at halfords, why were they illegal, got a £35 fine
the excuse they gave me was carrying a red light to the front of a motor vehicle is this true? or are the police trying to fund up their pension fund again, and why was i victemised when everywhere i go i notice them.

It is true. You cannot have a red light on the front of your car, or a white one on the back if travelling forwards.

The reason is it may confuse people into thinking that your travelling in the opposite direction to what you are. I know you have large headlamps that are much more powerful, but I suppose rules are rules. A few years ago, lorries drivers were putting red xmas lights on their wagons. They fell foul of the same rule too.

BTW shouldn't this be in the general folder?

It just has to be said - if you are sad enough to put lights on your screen washers then you deserve to have the book thrown at you. Have you got underbody neons and a big spoiler on your nova? :rolleyes:

Does the packaging have a warning on it, about the legality of using the product in the way you describe? If not, contact trading standards, and sue Halfords.

I don't think Halfords would be responsible for any warnings. A driver is supposed to be aware of the laws concerning these things. Knowing (finding out about) the laws is part of being a driver. For example, there are no warnings when buying number plates about the legal requirements of letter size/spacing, nor warnings about putting stickers all over your front screen. Shops also sell car xmas lights, without warnings, but you can bet the police will pull you if they think the glow from them is effecting your view forward by reflecting off the windscreen.

Basically its common sense. Look, check, buy, fit (if legal).

My thoughts but I'd want to upset him. I wonder if he drives around with his fog lights on too?
