I have been getting offers of guarranteed money prizes through my letter box, today, it was a £25000 prize providing I sent money for the handling charge of £15.

Apparently, this scam is perfectly legal, I estimate that if one million people sent £15 it would net this company £15.000.000 and there are dozens of them from all over the world.

How can this be legal, when they are telling deliberate lies and preying on gullable people, usually the old and the sick. this practice should be outlawed and carry a heavy penalty.

How will you know if your estimate is right? ;)

Just post the letter back to them, or write return to sender on the envelope if one is provided. This goes for the countless loan applications, credit card approvals, business property management gumph i've received (and i'm only 20!)

Go to the Mailing Preference Service (http://www.tpsonline.org.uk/mpsr/) and sign up there. I did and I stopped getting junk mail (except for companies I already had dealings with) within a few months.

Makes me laugh to think that some idiots actually reply to these things.

Imagine, some people over breakfast must say:
"Oh look dear, this letter is from a company wanting to give us £25000 for no apparent reason, how super"

Losers! If nobody was dumb enough to reply, surely it would end up being a waste of time and money for these companies to bother mailing everybody.

Jack, signing off in a sarcastic way

They are illegal - I watch watchdog you know!

A lot of them come from overseas which is out of our jurisdiction legally and a lot of them are run from temporary addresses where the scammer has legged it by the time the police or trading standards get there

The official advice is

"If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is"
