View Full Version : Artists avoiding Sheffield?

I can’t help feeling that since the City Hall closed, we as a city are failing to get some of the 'larger' artists to play here.

There are planty of acts playing in places such as Bristol, Norwich, Brighton, Reading, Leeds, Manchester, Nottingham, Doncaster and Liverpool that are avoiding Sheffield. They are exactly the kinds of artists that would naturally fit the City Hall or the Octagon.

I'm not talking about the big arena acts, as they all seem to have Sheffield Arena as a mainstay of the UK tour.

However, looking on the Web I notice that over the next few months there are loads of acts playing anywhere but Sheffield - Lucie Silvas, Kaiser Chiefs, Jose Gonzales, The Flaming Lips, Richard Ashcroft, The Streets, Art Garfunkel, Shirley Bassey, Glen Campbell, Nanci Griffiths, Lucinda Williams, Ross Noble, The Wonderstuff, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, etc…

You might not want to see them yourselves, but don't you think that it reflects badly on Sheffield that we're completely ignored on UK national tours?

Oops, I didn't know The Streets had played.

I checked his website, and he's got an April/May tour of the UK which will visit;

Manchester
Glasgow
Edinburgh
Aberdeen
Newcastle
Nottingham
Bristol
Liverpool
Birmingham
Southampton
Exeter
London
Leeds

or in other words, every major English and Scottish city but Sheffield.

I don't see why Jose Gonzales couldn't visit Sheffield, particularly when you see the venues that he is playing;

April 2006

21 - Colston Hall, Bristol
22 - Manchester Apollo
23 - Cambridge Corn Exchange
24 - Hammersmith Apollo
26 - Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham
29 - Newcastle City Hall

May 2006

1 - New Theatre, Oxford
8 - Olympia Theatre, Dublin
9 - Spring and Airbrake, Belfast

Good point Rob!

Admittedly, most of the bands/artists you've listed don't appeal to me, but,
I'm always shooting off down to Nottingham/London (Jazz Cafe in particular!) or Manchester/Leeds to catch my favourite acts. Every now and again, I would be so nice just to pop to the City Hall and hear whomever's on stage say, 'How y'doin' Sheffield?', not 'Much love for the Nottingham support!', etc.... :rolleyes:

I understand what you mean. But artists like the Kaiser's (L**ds scum) & Ashcroft (genius) would not be as effective in an "City Hall" type gig. I'm going to see Ashcroft in Doncaster at the Dome & even if the City Hall had been available, I'm pretty certain he would have still been booked for Doncaster. It's either that or two or three nights at the Leadmill...
