View Full Version : Suggestions for places to rent in Sheffield
SeaBreezeUF 10-02-2012, 15:32 Hi everyone-
I've recently moved to Sheffield from the States and will be here for a year. I'm currently in temporary housing in Lodge Moor, which is lovely but a bit removed from everything for someone who is so new. I work at the University of Sheffield and would prefer to have the option to walk to work (I do not have a car here). I'd like some suggestions from you all where to live as I keep hearing mixed suggestions.
I am looking for a furnished one bedroom flat and would prefer to sleep at night rather than listen to a neighbor's loud music.
Some have suggested the City Centre, others say a lot of students live there and as such, it's very noisy. Also, I've heard utility bills can be a bit steep in some places there.
Another suggestion was Broomhill, but there don't seem to be many one bedroom flats for rent there currently, which is what I'm looking for.
I don't mind walking 25-30 minutes to work.
Thank you for any advice/suggestions you may have!
Hi and welcome to Sheffield. You could try Ecclesall rd, not the end near the city centre as that's a bit rough/studenty, but a mile or so up. It would be in walking distance. Walkley is pleasant enough and again walking distance, or move a little further out and use public transport.
Good luck and enjoy your stay!
WallBuilder 10-02-2012, 16:23 You could have a look at Netheredge as there are various flats there and it's quiet but is within walking distance of the city Centre, also there is a fairly good walking route to the university and there is a regular bus service the 22
If you do find something you are interested in then come back here and ask for more detailed info as some areas have good and bad points.
SeaBreezeUF 10-02-2012, 18:21 Thanks for the replies! I'll start looking into Ecclesall Rd, Walkley and Netheredge. My monthly bus pass was a bit pricey so I am hoping to avoid that expense which is why I wanted walking distance but at the same time, if I live somewhere that I need to bus into work but can walk to get groceries, etc, I would be fine with that too. My current situation is very isolated, which isn't good for a newcomer!
WallBuilder, as my search ramps up in the next couple weeks I will be sure to come back on this thread and get some more info on the places I'm considering. Thanks again :)
Your best bets for the sort of communities you'd probably want to live in are Hunters Bar/Ecclesall Road and Broomhill/Crookes/Walkley. But one-bed flats are a bit expensive for what you get and aren't that plentiful in those areas.
A small 2-bed house in Crookes/Walkley would be better value than a flat I would say and there are more of them. £400-£500pcm. A room in a house share would obviously be a cheaper option but maybe you don't fancy that?
Try a search of rightmove on what you can afford and draw your areas:

mogwai84 13-02-2012, 22:23 I rented a 1 bed flat at AG1 which was ok, the other places I've rented were 2 bed. I think there's a 1 bed development on Fitzwilliam Street, and Crookes/Broomhill may be good if you fancy a flat share.
Also there are 1 bed flats down at White Croft Works/Cutlery Works down at West Bar, but it's a bit of a trek up to the uni.
As mentioned, rightmove is your friend. just stick in 1 bed and you'll find the developments in the area.
GrannyGranny 14-02-2012, 09:33 Why don't you look for a house/flat share.
It will be much cheaper and its a good way of meeting people.
SeaBreezeUF 14-02-2012, 19:01 Thanks for all your help! I hadn't heard of rightmove- would have been using it all along. A flat actually opened up in Broomhill in a residential area so I think I'll be moving in there :)
Poshlass 18-02-2012, 09:32 I wouldnt go anywhere near the town center, go somewhere neat attercliff as it has its quiet parts and you can always get public transport to the university. Look around a bit, you can always find a good deal in sheffield.
poshperson 18-02-2012, 11:47 Attercliffe? lol.
Postcodes S7,10 and 11. Check for students living next door and how regular the buses are. Walkley is nice but for parking and when it snows. Netherthorpe is in quite a bit of demand but again check out the neighbours!
ADacey1986 18-02-2012, 12:50 S20 is a good location or s12
Jeffrey Shaw 18-02-2012, 23:04 Attercliffe? lol.

S7 is not so convenient for either University, however. Pref. S10/S11 (or S3 if price is more important than quality of area).

Or Broomhill?
stressconsul 05-03-2012, 19:09 Check out the area around Greystones (S11) and the roads between Greystones and Hunters Bar.
daniel3982 06-03-2012, 18:37 Personally I'd go for around Hunter's Bar or Sharrow Vale in your position, failing that Broomhill or Crookes.
