yeah i noticed that too - but its certainly an error as my AA street by street guide has it spelled the correct way..

and multimap is usually so reliable too..

Even though Eccleshall is in Staffordshire?

My personal reason for getting it wrong for a number of years was that I grew up just down the road from the Eccleshall in Staffordshire- took me a while to notice, and took even longer for me to habitually spell it correctly.

Some forummers deliberately misspell Ecclesall to wind up a particular forum member who painstakingly points out all misspellings of 'Eccleshall'. I won't mention any names, but it may only be awhile before this thread is spotted by ......... :suspect:

The only people who realy care are those who live in the surrounding areas.

Spelling it wrong is like not showing sufficient envy/respect of their success in life and lofty possition, they get very miffed if they think you might be having a bit of a laugh at their expense.

Thats why some people do it on purpose.

And there i was thinking it was people just not bothering to spell it correctly...

i once saw a sign outside tesco - put there by tesco which listed its address, with the wrong spelling - and just assumed that they were stupid / lazy for not spelling it right....

When I used to work in the Globe Works on Penistone Road, I often used to spell out my office address to people on the phone. In common with most Sheffielders, I never really saw any comedy value in the word because every fibre of my being automatically recognised it as 'Penny-stun', but half way through the spelling-out, there would invariably be a stifled Finbarr Saunders-type 'fnarr fnarr' snigger on the other end of the line.

I thought they were just being very immature. Until I saw a sign for Cockermouth and nearly crashed my car.

Always laugh at that one myself, in fact laugh at Warrington in general!:D :D

However not as good as Pratt's Bottom in Kent or the villages of 'Twatt' in Orkney and Shetland, you'd be seriously embarrassed to live in those places I'm sure, especially if you're a resident of the Scottish places because a lot of them have 'Twatt' as a surname as well!:hihi: :hihi:

For those that like an energetic holiday why not try skiing? One of the flashiest places is around Aspen in Colorado and one of it's most popular locations is Sam's Knob (http://www.aspentimes.com/article/20050109/RECREATION01/40226001&SearchID=73221511433853)! Literally thousands of people have been up and down Sam's Knob and apparently had the time of their lives!:hihi: :hihi:

Closer to home, if you head for the Black Mountains you can climb on top of Lord Hereford's Knob. :D

Another place name that always cracks me up is Effingham, I think it's in Surrey. I once worked many years ago with a bloke who couldn't talk without effing and blinding all the time- we ended up nicknaming him Lord Effingham and he could never work out why, which made it even funnier.:D

Sorry to be off thread - but in light of recent posts......

I remember a secretary saying she was on the phone to someone - she said "I'm talking to Mike Hunt". The office went v quiet for a few seconds before the pain of trying not to laugh out loud.

PS Sorry Michael, if you're a Forum watcher.

There was indeed a Lord Effingham, who achieved a brief notoriety as a result of his association with Ronnie and Reggie Kray. Apparently, he was a decent enough old cove, but down on his luck and rather gullible. The Krays made him a director of one of their clubs (Esmerelda's Barn) and also liked to order him about, their favourite command to him being: 'Effy, get us our Effin' Tea!'.

The spelling of ECCLESALL and ECCLESHALL could both be right, its two old english words ECCLES meaning church and HALH meaning hollow. The church in the hollow, the church in question went centuries ago but the place name is still in use, but the family that lived in BROOM HALL was named the DE ECCLESALS (I think thats the correct spelling) in the 1500s and I believe they were of French origin.Could It be named after them?

I vaguely remember that Penistone Leisure Centre was once featured in That's Life with Esther Rantzen (remember that programme?) in the bit where they showed funny photos the viewers had sent in. In the picture I think the 't' was missing so it read PENIS ONE LEISURE CENTRE. I was very young at the time but I still found it funny.

Sardonic as ever, nick2 :P :P

You do have a bee in your bonnet about the area though, don't you?

Is it the people who live there that p*ss you off, or is it just the just the area?

*Thinks* Oohh, that Ecclesall Rd, it p*sses me off so much, just walking past that poncey Nonnas makes my blood boil. I feel a need to vent my anger on the forum at every given oppertunity :hihi: :D

It's the attitude of certain people who live in said area, I don't do blanket dislike of whole areas/groups of people, it's on an individual basis.

I't the kind of people who say things like (I overheard this while in the Botanical gardens one day) "I can't believe they have allowed a tattooist to open there, I feel sorry for them when they try to sell their houses round there". I just wanted to run over and shout "what are you on about you stupid woman ?"
