Does anyone remember one of the first indian restaurants to open in sheffield?
It was called "the canary" I believe it was at the bottom of cambridge st(just past cole brothers) I can't think of an indian restaurant in the city centre that was open before this one.

I always thought the first one was the one in Fitzalan Sq, at the side of the old pictures, you used to go downstairs to it, can not remember the name, it was pretty poor compared to todays standard.

What year you talking anyway for The Canary?

I remember once(in the late seventies)on entering this establishment I was nearly knocked over by a group of men "doing a runner"not far behind them was a rather irate indian chap bransishing a meat cleaver!!

Yes

You are spot on the Canary was the first Restaurant in sheffield, but chinese, not indian.
We used to go drinking up West Street in the late 60's and fall in there for Chicken Chop Suey, and in them days it came with a fried egg on the top.
Cost around 10 bob (50 pence ) today.

I remember going to a Chinese when I was a kid on London Rd (next to highfields Library), must be about 30 years ago.
The deco and signs are still the same today.

Anybody else know any old restuarants?

I met my wife in Chinatown bottom of London Rd ( now called Candy Town)

You mean The Golden Tiger mikey, not sure what they call it these days, with reference to Ian Barkers post, they too used to do a dish with a fried egg on top, the House Special if I remember correct, anyone remember The Curry Centre on London Road, I think that has gone or changed aswell.

Does anyone remember the restaurant on the top floor of the old Co-Op building at the bottom of the London Road where Safeway is now? My mother used to take me and brother there every Christmas after seeing Santa's Grotto on the bottom floor, because I was told later on in life, that it was cheap! What I always remember about the restaurant was the deco, where it had the purple glittery columns and the old styled elevator with the lift attendant. From what I can remember, the whole interior was dark and gloomy. But when-ever we went, which would have been the last week before Christmas, on a Saturday lunch time towards the end of the 70's early 80's, it was always dead! :| [/b]

The Islamabad on Attercliffe didn't supply cutlery so you ate it in the traditional way using chunks of naan or pitta bread. You could bring your own booze too which made it a really cheap night out. Top food too.

Hi Mikey,
I used to eat at that chinese restaurant near Highfields library in the 70s and he had his licence taken from him because of serving rats in the food.

But days later he was back in business as his brother in law had stepped in to put his name over the door.

I never ate there again and I still feel sick when I think of what I might have eaten.

I remember the Rickshaw, that was in the late 50'/early 60's. It was up past the cathederal, don't rememberr the street, though. Also , does anyone remember the restaurant at the top of Commercial Street. Across from the pub that was next to the News Theatre in Fitzallen Square. Always thought the restaurant was too posh for me to go in! Does the name Gambit ring a bell??

After work behind the bar of the Hen and chickens, I used to take my future wife to a couple of little Italian Restaurants on London Road, in the early 90`s. I wish I could remember what they were called.

The first, or one of the first was the Zing Va - which later became the Rickshaw, and was off West St, near the Glossop Rd baths.
We used to call in after a night at the Locarno in the 50's - it was one of the few restaurants that were open late at night.

Can anyone remember the coffee bar that opened in the mid 50's on Union St, just down from the Suggs Arcade? It had the 2nd jukebox in town. The 1st was downstairs at Marsdens Milk Bar opposite the old Peace gardens. 3d a pop!

Thanks Regblind - you're right on - the El Mambo. Brings back memories too (I'm 65 next week). It was the time when 7", 45rpm records were in vogue - we used to pop down from there to the British Home Stores on the Moor, where the girls on the record counter would play the latest hits for us. The Big Bands were still very popular then, as Rock and Roll was still in it's infancy. Thanks again.

That was my very first curry. We didn't know what to order so we told the waiter to bring what he suggested. Bad move!! My lips were burning for hours after. I never forgot my first experience. Like losing your virginity, it wasn't a pleasant one! Ha Ha

Venus Steak House - oh yes I remember it well!

Have lots of pics from my younger days there, we used to think it was a big night out!!

We went one Xmas, a huge crowd of us, girls and partners. Some charlie ordered a couple of bottles of wine and then acted dumb when the bill arrived - we all ended up chipping in but thought he was a complete Scrooge. My friend dumped him shortly afterwards.

In the '50s my mother worked at a restaurant which was alongside the old Hippodrome on Cambridge Street,. The policy of the management, was for the waitresses to salvage any pieces of meat left over from dirty plates being cleared away, which was to be used in the next day's stew. My mother was fired for refusing to do this.

Wonder if this could happen now.

I went in a couple of times with my grandparents in the 60's during the annual family Christmas shopping expedition to Sheffield (while my parents went to Redgates).

Very traditional English - roast beef and Yorkshire pud.

I remember the Mustard Seed coffee bar gosh that take me back, it was the place to be seen! Also the Wimpy with the knives with red plastic handles which bent when you tried to cut anything with them. Then there was the Golden Egg (Fargate?). Davies Cafe which was in a building where the CO-op is now across from Castle Markets, used to meet my Dad who went there everyday for lunch from the YEB offices where Ponds Forge is now. Loved the memories of the Venus Steak House Menu. My first job in catering was at Dore Grill (circa 76?). Sooooo posh then. Prawn Cocktail, Steak Diane, Gateau...............funny thing is the menu is still exactly the same.

If you mean the one over the shops at Hillsborough Corner, it was "The Bluebird". The building was demolished to make way for Supertram. The Bluebird was one of a group of three Chinese restaurants, other two were The Canary on Charles Street, and The Peacock in the Wicker (the best).

I remember the restaurant well as my mother use to take me there on a regular basis. People use to take their own Hendersons Relish when it was meat and potato pie day. I think the meat and potato pie cost 2/6. It was also a popular venue for wedding receptions - bit different from what they want today as a venue.

We used to eat at what I believe was the first indian restaurant in Shef. that was on one of the back streets behind the Locarno, but I can't remember it's name. One of the guys there used to give a big smile (which showed his gold tooth) when we were sitting down stairs and ordered a VERY hot curry; when tasted it took the top of your head clean off! It was a News Theatre, then The Electra Palace (or vice versa) then it became the Classic.... then it got burnt down, about 20 yrs ago. 1985/6 -ish IIRC (not entirely sure if it was in the same fire as destroyed wigfalls, next door, or a seperate fire from the restaurant underneath)

I'd put my money on the Indus in Fitzalan Sq. as being the first Indian. On a previous post, somebody mentioned the Oriental on Langsett Road. I remember it well, not very clean if I remember correctly, but it was one of a few ethnic restaurants about in the 60's, so choice was limited. The Slammer stands out more than anything to me!

Can't quite place where Jessops is, precisely, but The Gambit was definitely on the left going down Commercial Street, quite close to what were the Gas Offices.
Not being a lover of Eastern food, I never went in this particular restaurant but there was an Indian restaurant on Convent Walk, run by a delightful gentleman whose name was Prittish (?) about 1970.
"Davies" ? I think you may mean Davy's which was on Fargate but I'm sure that wasn't an 'Indian' - more like the old Bewleys in Dublin - afternoon teas/coffee and cakes?

Tuckwoods was on the left hand side of Surrey Street, heading towards the library, near the Montgomery Theatre. Can't say what year it disappeared but I know my best pal was very sorry to lose his regular Friday dining venue?

My Mum used to take me to the Geisha tea rooms down a lane - can't remember the name - somewhere off Fargate (near/opposite Coles corner), before I went in to the Childrens Hospital. Lovingly remember the toasted teacakes.

When I looked last year, I think the shop was empty.

Most Saturdays we used to go to the restaurant in Coles (new building - where it is now). Mum used to save her LV's (luncheon vouchers) from work so that we could dine out as a family - honeydew melon, halibut and apple pie - happy memories!

Was there a restaurant near Coles called the Venus Steak House?

Entrance was through a door right on the corner of Cambridge Street and Pinstone Street and then down a flight of stairs to the restaurant. Was run by the same people as the Coach House on the Wicker.

Italian restaurants on London Road included Dinos, Pavarotti's (long gone) and La Romantica which is excellent.

Anyone been to the excellent new Indian on London Road? "Aroma" is very swish and the food is outstanding. They also do a buffet on Monday evenings, all you can eat for just £10.95. You should try their lamb chops...

Is Dino's the one on London Road, on the right going out of town, just before the left hand bend? I think the bloke who ran that has also run other Italian Restaurants at different times. In the mid eighties, I used to go to a restaurant on the road that runs between Leopold Street and High Street - Orchard something. I think it shut at the start of the Orchard Square development. There used to be a dark haired bloke running it, but also an older man involved in it also.

The dark haired man also ran a restaurant on Abbeydale Road, on the right heading out towards the Woodseats Road area. I think he also had some part in a barbers, opposite.

Anyway, back to the OP. My earliest memory of an Indian is the Himalaya. I guess that I first went there in about 1975/76.

As far as Chinese Restaurants go, my first experience was much earlier, probably the earlier to mid sixties, but I'm not sure. That was near Hillsborough Corner - where the tram tracks from Malin Bridge now sweep across the corner. Someone earlier identied this as the Bluebird - I didn't remember the name.

No 7 Commercial Street.

According to Kelly's:

In 1939, it was called the Gambit Cafe, Refreshment Rooms

By 1963, it had become the New Gambit Restaurant.

Neither of the details mentions it being a Chinese Restaurant. I wonder if it always was a Chinese Restaurant, or if it changed from an "English" restaurant and kept the old name, a la Butlers.

In 1963, the Cinema was the Cartoon Cinema. The restaurant next door was the Queens Restaurant. Nothing to say whether it was Greek or not.

In 1939, it was the Electra Palace, but no restaurant shown next to it.

I believe that at one time the Gambit Restaurant had chess sets to amuse the diners as thet waited. Probably this is where the name came from.
There used to be a fish & chip restaurant at the back of the Moor - Hopkinson's Capri Restaurant - I think this later became Top Wok near Fox Furriers.

I surmise that is the same Mr.Hopkinson who owned the Zing Vaa?
I never got over seeing him, a Chinese man called Hopkinson!

The cinema was also called the" news theatre" at one time.

I took my first girlfriend for a meal to the Golden Tiger on Highfields in the late 60's. It was my first ever meal in a restaurant & I wanted to impress her.
When the food arrived I asked her if she wanted some relish(Hendersons) from the jar on the table...it was soy sauce:blush:

on orchard street the italian was called la cappanina.....run by enzo and nello

I think the Wimpy Bar was on Change Alley, can't remember whether it replaced Marsdens or not.
Change Alley was leading from Norfolk St to High St ending with Walshes.

I belive that some foreigners take/took "English" pseudonyms to help their native customers. Richard at the Curry Centre was one.

I presume it was also to avoid the embarrassment of the English meeting a foreign name and asking if Mohammed was a surname or Christian name.

[THe Restaraunt under the News Theatre was called THE QUEENS and it was owned by a Greek Cypriot family called GABRIELIDIS and they lived on STAFFORD RD just at the bottom of City Rd and they also had another house next to theirs which was let of into flats ( I had one ) they called themselves GABRIEL and they went back to Cyprus quite a few years ago. My wife worked at the Queens for a while as did a mate of mine called Harry Colley who came of Stonecliffe Rd.

Hi Lazarus, I've just seen your posting about The Queens Restaurant, I also worked there with Mr Gabriel and his son George. My late husband Tom was the chef there. This was about 1965-67.

What about Butlers, opposite Jessops Hospital.

OK, not a Restaurant in the "going out for an evening meal" sense. Just good simple food for breakfast or lunch.
