View Full Version : Morrisons Hillsborough
AlquarUK 01-03-2006, 10:04 IMHO Since Morrisons closed the ramp linking the top and bottom entrances the traffic has become dangerous on Penistons road. It jams back to KFC most days causing tailbacks as far as Parkside Road and people dangerously swap lanes to avoid been caught in the queue.
So my question is, should Morrisons open the link between the top and bottom carpark, BUT intorduce a token scheme where you need a token from the shop to get out of the carpark to stopp people just driving through?
In an ideal world this wouldn't be necessary but people are lazy and will drive round to the bottom entrance just so they can park closer to the main entrance!
Opinions? :)
people are lazy and will drive round to the bottom entrance
I don't think that's the case - the (almost total) majority of the cars in the inadequate right-turn filter lane on Penistone Road haven't driven round from the direction of the top car park. If they had, they'd be approaching from the other direction (Bamforth Street), or queuing up Bradfield Road.
The problem is that even with the vast amount of land there, the junction was completely inadequately constructed for the volume of traffic. Added to the inability of the average shopper to pull away promptly when the lights turn green, means that there is often a very dangerous jam there.
Also, the top car park isn't exactly underused.
I think they should leave it closed. It causes no problems closed, but if open the idiots who scream round the car park anyway would have more chances to hurt someone.
SteveWilson 01-03-2006, 10:27 I dont think it was closed to stop people driving through from langsett road to penistone road, as it would be quicker to drive round.
Dunno why its shut tho, it is very silly. dont see why there should be a problem with it being opened
metalman 01-03-2006, 10:52 I think that's exactly why it was shut though, to stop people using it as a short cut between Langsett Rd and Penistone Rd.
I still can't believe that Morrisons were basically given carte blanche to manufacture their own traffic jam by having the sets of lights at the junction on Penistone Rd. It's a shame the council didn't make them build some sort of flyover or underpass instead; indeed given the elevated position it occupies, a flyover might have been a really good idea.
How long ago was it closed? I've lived in walkley for about 5 years now and it's been closed ever since i moved there.
I can see why though. Tescos on infirmary road has people driving through the car park simply to avoid a queue on the road above. I'm sure morrisons was finding the same.
The traffic lights of course serve more businesses than just morrisons, at least BnQ, the job centre, and the garrison hotel.
Because flyovers only cost a couple of grand don't they? LOL
Not at all an implementable suggestion.
The answer is obvious - McD's/B&Q shouldn't have been allowed to have such big car parks which reduced the amount of traffic that can enter/exit the development on any one phase. Where McD's is should have been a left-turn in filter for those heading from town with room to allow two lanes of traffic from the other direction to both turn right into the development.
Anyone who stands for 10 minutes at that junction and observes the flow could tell you that.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 11:34 If langsett rd / hillsbro corner was opened again there would be less traffic on penistone road / bradfield road & parkside road, that would ease things. In the councils "grand plan" / intergrated transport plan:hihi: :hihi: , langset rd is for public transport, & penistone rd is for private cars & lorry's ect, Pity it only works on paper!!!
I don't think that's the case. The restricted junction you're talking about is ignored by so many vehicles it's as if there was no restriction at all. Not to mention the fact that vehicles can't physically turn left (hence it's restricted) from Middlewood Road onto Bradfield Road. Vehicles coming from the other direction are directed onto Penistone Road travelling in out-of-town direction and so also have nothing to do with the inadequate right-turn lane into the barracks on Penistone Road.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 12:22 Why cant you turn left? there's no sign! If the tram gate was removed & traffic was allowed to filter left instead of having to go up & round past 2 schools (Stupid route if you ask me & loads of parent / governors of the schools it passes)traffic would move quicker because it wouldn't stop to let cars out from near the Masons!!!!!!!:loopy:
The council acknowledged this was the case on many occations, it was allways there intention to "remove cars" travelling through hillsbough!
A way forward to help relieve outbound traffic would be to replace the round about at leppings lane with traffic lights, as long as they are in sync with the other lights on penistone road traffic would move quicker, rlieving conjestion from around Morrisons/ bradfield road.
RobsNo1Fan 01-03-2006, 12:24 You could always park in the top and walk down to the store!!!!
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 12:48 Dont think thats the point of the thread rob!!
Dont think thats the point of the thread rob!!
but if people did that instead of going to the bottom entrance in order to get a few metres closer, it may improve the situation.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 13:36 Yes but to do that from the north, you either have to go down to "Monty's" to turn right (by which time you may as well carry on & go to tesco) or break the law & go through the tram gates at hillsbro!! which is why the tram gates ought to be open for all traffic
Why cant you turn left? there's no sign! Apart from the "no left turn" sign and the fact the tightness of the corner makes it impossible for all but the shortest vehicles?
or break the law & go through the tram gates at hillsbro
Not really - from north you can come off Penistone Road, then Bradfield Road and then left onto Langsett Road and then left into the top car park. Trouble is Bradfield Road is usually jammed due to the people ignoring the tram gate, and it's not an intuitive route.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 13:49 The corners not tight, I'll check for that sign on my way home tonight then!!!!!!
You were talking about the langsett rd / hillsbro corner junction and getting to the main entrance of the barracks so I assume you mean turning left from Middlewood Road onto Bradfield Road (outside the old menswear shop) which is most definitely a no-left turn.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 14:04  No, coming from town, at the mo you have to turn left up the hill, past the school, then right past another school, then past the masons, & left towards malin bridge.
 How does that help you get to Morrison's?
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 16:13 Thats coming home, to get there I just go through hillsbro & turn left into the car park:hihi: :hihi: ,
But to do it legally, I have to leave middlewood rd, & use penistone rd, turn @swann mortons & sit for ages, or go to monty's to turn right to get on langsett rd to get in the top car park, just too much messing, to many wasted exhust gases, so we tend to use tesco!:hihi: :hihi: it's easier!!!!!!!!!!!!
You think the traffics bad now, look at the sdf booklet, it's going to get a whole lot worse!!
It seem's the council have turned 100% anti-car now!

Which brings us back to the original point - the ramp. It seems that people aren't fussed one way or the other.
Personally, I use Tesco too - even though it's further. Got fed up of that Morrisons never having any decent fresh produce.
Greybeard 01-03-2006, 16:57 The answer might be to invite Waitrose into the Claywheels lane development ? :)
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 19:43 Waitrose, no thanks, it's the dearest supermarket ever, but a nice "big" tesco would be nice, with a cheap petrol station too!!!!!!!!
Greybeard 01-03-2006, 19:56 Doubt the competition rules would allow another Tesco so close to the Infirmary site. perhaps a Netto super store ? - that one they have on Catchbar lane is impossible to get into by car :D

It's about time they stopped people turning right in to there car park, it causes to much congestion on catch bar lane / leppings lane.

Yeah, I can imagine it's made even worse as well when Wednesday are at home on Saturdays, when people don't park their cars, they just abandon them... :loopy:

Then its a no-go area, if you live beyond hillsbro you have to plan your day or face been stuck in traffic with loads of neandathols just walking in front of you if you do get to move!!
Henrietta 01-03-2006, 21:16 Netto super store ? - that one they have on Catchbar lane is impossible to get into by car:) And even harder to turn right out of! You've gotta be sharp off the mark there. That and turning right out of Carter Knowle Lane onto Eccleshall Road South :gag: Two of the worst in Sheffield :P
It's about time they stopped people turning right in to there car parkAnd how else do you suggest people get into the car park? Left turns only  :P
