Hi all,
I need to decide which uni to go to, and as I dont know Sheffield very well, I am having difficulty deciding whether to go to Hallam to do a BSC in Psychology, or Sheffield to do a BA in Pschology. I also have two children which I need to think about, and have noticed that some lectures start at 5pm, so I have no chance getting home in time. I have thought about moving to Sheffield, so maybe someone can let me know the nicer areas.
Thanks

I am at Sheffield University and think it is great, But obviously I am biased. What kind of property are you looking for, Council, private rent, student or are you looking to buy?

I'm at Sheff uni too and I think it's great too!

I know people at Hallam and they seem to be enjoying themselves though. My advice would be to visit them both, talk to departmental staff and see which one feels nicer to you.

Personally I think some of the Hallam buildings look amazing but the campus is spread over an enormous area - although maybe the same could be said of Sheff... Sheffield uni is higher in the league tables, i.e. has more status, if that matters to you, and also I think our union is supposed to be better.

I'm sure there are many good reasons to go to Hallam too tho. I just know more about Sheffield uni cos it's mine.

I'm a former Hallam student. I would totally reccomend talking to staff and choosing the best degree for you. Hallam campus is spread out but you'll probably find you're based on the one site.

Some modules do have later timed seminars, unlikely lectures, so you'd most likely be able to get into an early one so you can be in for your kids.

I'm pretty sure Hallam students can use Sheffield union and vice versa.

My initial gut instinct would be to choose Sheffield Uni, because of its reputation. Though looking closely at your post, you mentioned that one is a BSc, and the other one a BA. If I were you, I would look at the course modules in detail. Depending on what career path you wanna take after this degree, your modules are important. If you are looking to go into psychology as a career, then you need to find out whether the degree that you choose would be exempt from the professional exams that you need in the future to become qualified as a clinial psychologist. That is... if this is your aim to begin with.

The psychology field is pretty tough to break into. I would definitely choose Sheff Uni, if also in the future, you do not find work commercially, you may wanna look into lecturing. So therefore Sheff Uni is a better option. The choice is down to you really.

Hi cheers for that!

I think I have ,made the right choice.

As for housing, finding property in the areas you mentioned, is not that easy.
So was thinking of considering other places, as I have a car.

Is there any places you could advise me not to go?
It is important for me to be in the right area so that I can send my children to a good school..

Take care Melisa :)

What age are the kids? (infant/junior secondary)?

Broomhill is a good place to start
Has good primary schools nearby and superb 2nd schools like Tapton and King Edwards are quite close (so is the Uni!)
Also consider Crosspool and Ranmoor for the same reasons, both have regular buses that pass the Uni.

I work at a Junior school in Nethergreen

It is amazing! (tho i am biased!)
The infant school is also very good
Renting houses in nearby Nethergreen or Fulwood you would be looking at £550+ pcm - worth a look though as many are VERY nice places
