geckoqueen 28-02-2006, 09:56 PM Whats everyone's opinions on the use of (semi)nudity in the advertsing of pub and club nights? I have recently been engrossed in a rather interesting debate regarding this and I'd love to hear what other people think.
To me, aside from being rather tired and unimaginitive, I think it send mesages out about/to the patrons of that night that may not be accurate. An advert is essentially a representation of your whares, correct?
In my opinion, a (semi) naked woman on a poster/flyers says come to my pub/club we have (semi) naked ladies. This would not fill me with hope for an event if I am honest - come and be oggled (or worse) madam, erm no ta!
I am by no means a prude, and am well aware that sex sells. What I would say to pubs/clubs/promoters is think about the image you are sending out and ask yourself is that what you're about? Is your product is so weak it needs sex to sell it?
Don_Kiddick 28-02-2006, 10:33 PM Get them out
nuffsed:hihi:
geckoqueen 28-02-2006, 10:36 PM Thank you for a well thought out argument.
How did you establish yourself as the ruling gender for 2000 years?
that_animal 28-02-2006, 11:23 PM The use of models, both male and female, would appear to objectify both sexes and produce a feeling of I must look like that or I can look that good etc. But I think that each individual will make up their own mind and most intelligent people will not think 'Oh I can see her/him at that place' they think 'Well that got my attention, what's the place actually like?'
geckoqueen 28-02-2006, 11:31 PM 'what's the place actually like?'
And the only available answer they have to that is what is on the flyer. I think it would be perfectly clear from the flyer what the place was like, consequently even if you didn't intend that for your night, that's what you'd get.
PuressenceUK 28-02-2006, 11:32 PM Unfortunately sex sells. If you were to place a semi-clad man/woman on any advert you can almost guarantee double the notice factor of an advert without. I don't believe that such advertising will lead people the think the said venue will contain such people, but it would be more eye catching.
Only an idiot would think that semi-nude advertising must mean the place being advertised would have such people in it.
Rather than being sexist and just having a woman, why not have an attractive male and female on the advert?
To claim that women would be offended at being oggled at in a pub is frankly rubbish. Women who wear next to nothing and get offended at being looked at need to get a grip on the male brain. If you flaunt it we will look. Simple as. So.....I would say go for the attractive advert but lets have something for everyone.
If you need a male model for the advert please let me know. I'm not the best looker, but I am packing a large portion (hello girls!)
DaBouncer 28-02-2006, 11:35 PM The use of a sexual image to advertise alcohol and licenced premises was banned back in 2004/5 sometime. It was a new piece of legislation that came into force.
If people are still doing it they could be in for a hefty fine if they get reported.

Thats bloody ridiculous! A century since we got out of the sodding corsettes and petticoats (goths withstanding) we're supposed to cover back up because men can't control themselves? When I go out I shouldn't have to feel like I must cover myself in order to feel safe; sexual harrassment should not be tolerated! if you can't control your eyes, hands (or anything else) then do us a favour and stay in!
Having said that, when the flyers show scantily clad models and plays some 'RnB' pulp about shagging some ho, I can't help but feeling I'm fighting a losing battle.
DaBouncer, if you can get me a reference for that, or a definition of sexual imagery, that would be really useful.

No problem with controlling my hands, but theres a difference between looking and touching. If looking at someone makes them feel unsafe then maybe they should not go out?
Bacala 01-03-2006, 12:23 AM when I see scantily clad models on club flyers I think right, this night plays house/funky house/r n b/garage/cheese...basically any genre that is so dull it needs a bit of eye candy to spice the music up a bit

Some (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4351695.stm) info here.
More (http://www.cap.org.uk/cap/codes/cap_code/ShowCode.htm?clause_id=2152) info about it here (see point 56.9).
Hope this helps :D

I suppose it depends whether you 'look' as in 'Oh look a woman' or 'stare' as in 'hmmmm breasts'.
Thanks DaBouncer, I shall have a good read through all this. A quick glance reads as its only wrong to suggest sexual success/improvement through alcohol.
Well, yes, I do think that flyers with semi-nudity says, 'gorgeous girls of this calibre in this establishment'. (Yes, I'm female as well, before you ask...)
It's one of those sub-conscious thoughts that enters yoru mind on first impression. Do I think it's right ? No. If I frequent that club, I'd be more cautious in what I wear, especially if I don't want to be oggled so.

I thought that all guys do that. The ones that denies it just don't want to look bad.

Tchoh! stop playing hard to get - you know you want me
They all do in the end :D  :heyhey:
youwhatref 01-03-2006, 07:52 AM Nothing wrong with it in general :heyhey:. It's very similar to all these dance CD's you see advertised on TV. They always have a girl wearing little dancing along, or even a bloke with his top off.
I think it is to give the sense of being abroad (say Ibiza) and dancing in a hot club where the dress tends to be that way.
willman 01-03-2006, 08:39 AM you can't control your eyes,
.
theres no law against looking, if you want to wear fasionable clothes that are appealing/provocative or sexy you invite everyone to look. men & women.
in fact fully clothed women can look more attractive than some skinny bint in a belt, but you still have to look just to make sure.

Marketing communications must neither link alcohol with seduction, sexual activity or sexual success nor imply that alcohol can enhance attractiveness, masculinity or femininity.
The way a solicitor would argue is that by showing semi naked models on a flyer or poster for a club is in fact linking alcohol with seduction.
I used to promote a night at Takapuna and we had to make sure we stuck rigidly to the above guildelines.

No but there is against sexual harrassment! Lookings one thing, I wouldn't have a problem with you scanning the room occasionally (we probably all do that), but I would consider gawping slack jawed at my breasts to be harrassment and any good establishment would kindly ask you decist or leave. There is obviously middle ground here that I shall leave to your sense of etiquette.

Thanks DaBouncer, I might pick up a copy of the ones I've seen and see what you think of them, legally speaking. Alas must find a scanner first.

No problem. :)
willman 01-03-2006, 03:45 PM i do think that the use of sex & nudity to publicise anything is totally unnecessary. i do admit to looking & do find the female form extremely provocative(geckoqueen - if u see someone drooling whilst looking at your breasts, it will probably be me) however irrelavant promotion of products is pathetic.
special k - why do we have to see someone wearing see thru stuff, French connection uk why do we have to see 2 birds snogging.(it asterisked the FC uk so i had to spell it out)
i'm not enticed to buy either product range, & it's more likely to be less since seeing the ads.
geckoqueen 01-03-2006, 10:10 PM if u see someone drooling whilst looking at your breasts, it will probably be me
In which case please don't be offended if I am the one pointing you out to the bar or door staff, complaining of harrassment.
I'm glad that despite the above comment, you do actually understand the point I am trying to make. This gives me hope.
Saffy 02-03-2006, 07:17 AM I'll be sure to wear a polo neck next time I go clubbing .. :D

i do understand fully your predicament, i would hate to be good looking with a good figure/physique haivng people looking at me all the time.thats why i go out of my way to look pug ugly & dress like val doonican.
i do feel that a claim of harrassent is unjustified as we could always claim incitement or encouragement.
although it is only a defence i do think that if ladies or guys don't want ogling then they shouldn't wear the stuff they do.unfortunately it does scream" look me aren't i gorgeous" to everybody else.if you dont want anyone to see them cover them up.
why do people advertise they have an ipod by wearing it in the street,'cos they're proud & want us to know, same theory really.
i do still agree that the use of unecessary & superficial "sex" is a waste of time & has little impact on people over a certain age - it is usually aimed at the younger more encouragable age groups hence the club flyer. you'll never see it used for Grab a Granny nights.

unfortunately (for you) and fortunately for everyone with eyes, the law does not consider looking at someone, no matter how it is done or for how long to be harrasment.
If you don't want people looking at flesh, don't put the flesh on display.
I can imagine the response of most bouncers to you telling them you want some guy thrown out because he looked at your breasts
DaBouncer 02-03-2006, 10:31 AM I can imagine the response of most bouncers to you telling them you want some guy thrown out because he looked at your breasts
I know pretty much what the door staff would say to be honest and no offence Geckoqueen in this instance it wouldn't be in your favour.
I mean sure there are degrees of people just stood there ogling (maybe even drooling) over a womans chest which would prompt me to have a word in that persons ear if I were the door staff. If you're talking they're at a distance and looking at the ladies chest on occasions it would just be a "put a crdigan on then" type of response.
I have thrown someone out of a venue (who turned out to be a former SF member... no names mentioned) because he was handing out his flyers to his "questionable" magazine and taking sneaky pictures of womens cleavage without their permission. However that is a different scenario.
Like I say it would wholeheartedly depend on the circumstances.
As far as geckoqueen is concerned tho, the use of semi naked images in advertising club nights where alcohol is served would be now illegal.
Cyclone 02-03-2006, 10:47 AM the legislation didn't sound that clear to me.
Until it's been tested in the courts i'd guess that some clubs will skirt close to the line of the law and rely on a solicitor to argue for them if they ever get prosecuted.
DaBouncer 02-03-2006, 10:51 AM A Manchester club night (no names mentioned) did in fact get prosecuted for that very offence.
I wouldn't like to be the one to test it again.... we had one of our flyers pulled when we spoke to a council rep regarding the laws due to it's nature and it wasn't even revealing.
However... not up to me to change your mind
Cyclone 02-03-2006, 10:52 AM Doesn't matter, i'm nothing to do with promoting club nights.
DaBouncer 02-03-2006, 10:53 AM Doesn't matter, i'm nothing to do with promoting club nights.
No need for you to concern yourself with the legislation then I guess ;) :P
richard 02-03-2006, 11:04 AM Surely when a pub or club uses sex to sell itself it's basically saying it's run out of ideas? I take it as a pointer the place is best avoided. I didn't used to, I think it's an experience thing.
j_in_sheff 02-03-2006, 01:34 PM I think this whole argument is a sign of the base nature of our society. Advertising only works if you let it, unfortunately the majority of the population are too stupid to realise what these insiduous companies are doing to them. People who go to these places are generally only intersted in getting ****** and shagging each other. That is why the club companies use sex to sell them.
Dont complain about these things, its not degrading to women if you aren't drawn in by the advertising. Just dont go to the club, use your power as a consumer. Get a life and do something worthwhile with your time rather than killing braincells and spending all the next day in bed with a hangover.........GROW UP!
Agent Gypo 02-03-2006, 02:53 PM Nudity is great.... Though it seems a little desperate to use it to sell things, especially club nights.
