View Full Version : Virus / Spyware / Firewall ........HELP please
My McAfee ran out a month or so ago, and so, reading this site have downloaded AVG virus protection, Spyware doctor, and Sygate personal firewall.
The AVG seems OK.
However maybe the other 2 are clashing with each other.
I frequenly get windows telling me that 'NT Kernal & System' (ntoskrnl.exe) and (svchost.exe)is being blocked. What are these?
I downloaded Spyware Doctor to avoid being spied on, and the Firewall for obvious reasons.
I don't really know if there is too much now and it's clashing.
alchemist 28-02-2006, 12:37 the two process you mention are acceptable as its the computer talking to itself so you can clear them through, for anti spyware i use spywaregaurd, spywareblaster, spybot and adaware, i also found that recently spyware doctor has started acting very strange so i have pulled it

OxenTwins 28-02-2006, 13:43 did you remove mcafee before installing AVG and the firewall, as sometimes they can clash, especially with firewalls this is the case, as they work at a system level, causing them to fight over the connections,
Most firewalls fail if you already have another one installed, also because they fail some are set to block connections if there are not running,
first thing to check is that the firewall is not blocking the programs.
I've got AVG and Sygate but uninstalled the Spyware once I'd cleared my PC when I had a virus recently. The other two work fine for me.

Tried to remove Mcafee, but wouldn't uninstall completely. then tried to remove all McA files most of which did apart from mcagent.exe which MAY have been 'write protected'.
Still getting notices to say that some components of McAfee are not installed properly.
Must say that the confusion arose when Sygate was downloaded admittedly after Spyware doctor was already on.
Thanks for help. More would be welcome!!
OxenTwins 28-02-2006, 23:21 Looks like you need to stop the parts of mcafee that are still running from starting these are either going to be xp services or files that are in the windows startup,
If your on XP click start - run and type in services.msc, look for anything that says mcafee, double click, set it to disable and then stop it,
For the programs in startup, best using spybot S&D, click mode then advanced mode, click tools on the left at the bottom, make sure system startup is ticked, click system startup on the left, and remove anything mcafee, then restart, that should stop any mcafee things
TESTPASS 01-03-2006, 02:06 If it dont uninstall then get the original install (disk\exe) and goto reinstall it will ask if you want to repair or remove ;) .
but..
Have you tryed AVAST HOME ? its a free AV prog that i swear by as being the best free one Iv used to date.
It has its definition files updated on a daily basis and I find it catches nigh on all major viruses .
like I say its free and all you need is to register to get it for the year or you can have it on an unregistered trial for around 2 mnths or something.
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
check it out, I think personaly its better than AVG but google it first and make your own mind up .
Trouble is I don't have the disc - the PC is second hand.
AVG is fine but the SYGATE firewall is doing my head in. I don't know what to allow or block.
I've wellied the Spy Doctor.

I dont think the three you have installed should clash
I have the following installed and they dont clash
spybot
adaware
windows new defender
spyware guard
spyware blaster
avast antivirus
zone alarm
get rid of spyware doctor.
just use spybot & adaware, i think they are both on download.com, do regular updates & scans.
make sure you do regular windows updates too, turn automatic updates on, it'll save a lot of trouble.
you could get a hardware firewall / router. it'll provide a good, fairly secure & much less annoying firewall. they are pretty cheap now.
It APPEARS I already have a firewall in XP.
Is it safe to disable Sygate, it's sending me daft with all its messages I dont know enough about which interrupt typing etc.
It is also noisier rattling inside - something doesn't like what's going on!!
melthebell 03-03-2006, 22:12 i only use xps firewall
prolly not that good but still :P
i use kerio on my win me partition
OxenTwins 04-03-2006, 07:30 Windows firewall on xp sp2 is ok, but not to be counted on, it has very basic aplication blocking, and won't block outbound connections, so if you get any form of Trojan or worm, it will be allowed to connect to the net
I always use a 3rd party firewall, like Kerio or Outpost, but i also like to know whats going on, and which programs are allowed to connect
I'll have a look at Kerio & Outpost.
Meanwhile 'Someone is scanning my pc' at this moment, 'Minor severity'. The more you try - the more you are confused!!

So long as your firewall isn't letting them in. We have ZAP, and turned the notifications off (currently 569,562 intrusion attemps have blocked).
Does having an ADSL router protect your PC as a firewall? I am running AVG (Freeware) and so far so good but am nervouse about firwall issues. (I used to have Norton 2005 for AV and Firewall but thought the upgrade price too steep and it has now stopped working!)
Any advice?
Thanks,
Alky

OxenTwins 05-03-2006, 15:40 If it's a firewall router then it will give you inbound protection, but they don't have outbound protection by default
