View Full Version : For Drinking...Tap Water versus Bottled Water?
shoeshine 28-02-2006, 11:09 I can't stand drinking Tap water on it's own. I have to take several medicinal tablets each day, and I just can't bring myself to use Tap water to do this.
I also hate Tap water mixed with Cordials....it has to be Bottled water every time.
Is it just me, or do you have the same problem?

I have exactly the same problem. I hate the stuff. :gag:
I'll use it in my coffee, and that's about it!
DaBouncer 28-02-2006, 11:10 I quite like tap water personally... all the better with some dilute juice with it too.
neeeeeeeeeek 28-02-2006, 11:11 My guess is that if someone bottles some tap water and sticks it in your fridge with a bottle of bottles water, you would not know the difference. Sheffield has wonderful water, if you were in London then I would understand.
I like it from the fridge with a slice of lemon.
If you filter it, it's far more drinkable. My water smells like a swimming pool, but after going through a filter in the fridge I couldn't tell you the difference between that and Evian.

Too true!
I've been in London on and off for the last year, and the water is bloody disgusting. :gag:
The tap water where I am tastes dreadful. It's a little better after it's been through the Britta filter, but not much. It's fine for making tea, though, hence the reason for the filtering. I buy cheapo 19p a bottle fizzy water from Tesco. Much nicer.
I always thought Sheffield tap water water was rather nice.
I drink tap water. Whenever I go out walking I fill my water bottle with it.
Its best cold, first thing in the morning when I've awoken with a mouth like the bottom of a parrot's cage after a night down the Cask
*Twinkle* 28-02-2006, 11:24 I don't mind either really :) I do prefer tap water chilled, but thats as simple as putting a bottle in the fridge :)
The water in worksop mings, even with cordial... ewww!
Tintsexpert 28-02-2006, 11:33 dont mind either, do mind paying a pound for a small bottle when I'm out & about though.
Sheffield tap water = corparation wine!!!
Phanerothyme 28-02-2006, 11:48 If you let the water stand for a while to let the chlorine evaporate, Sheffield tap water (here at least) is pretty sweet. It's pH neutral and it doesn't fur the kettle, and is not full of dissolved solids. Filtering it to remove the chlorine is uncessary, as it vanishes of its own accord.
sTaGeWaLkEr 28-02-2006, 11:54 I have a problem with mineral water, or rather the marketing. Apparently the one I bought at a petrol station at a cost of £1-95 has sat in an organic rock pool high in the mountains for a few million years, before being filtered down through the Scottish highlands for a few more years, thus helping the purification process and ridding it of all the toxins, so that it reaches me in tip-top condition.
Best before June 2006!?????
:loopy:
I have to say I'm amazed at people living in Sheffield saying they don't like the taste of tap water. Having lived in a few places around the country, the water here is absolutely gorgeous by comparison with most other places.
One tip for those who prefer bottled water - try just chilling tap water in the fridge, to see if you just prefer your water colder.
If you use Yorkshire Water ... its the best in the country .... If you use Trent(I think) water in Sheffield then its not as nice.

I totally agree! The tap water in just about every other place in Britain just doesn't compare to Sheffield's water, which is wonderful. I have to say it's my favourite drink, nice and cold from the tap. I hear our water is the only supply which has not had flouride or owt else added to it! Long may it stay that way!
If you have nasty water in your house you may be on a different regional supply, or it could be your pipes, as the tap water at work comes from storage tanks and tastes of dirt and mould. :gag:
Having lived in the south, where the water is absolutely horrid I have to say the 'Pennine' water is much better.
Its absolutely great at my Mothers house, unfortunately at my house it tends to come out with a twinge of 'rust' and is really ....horrid.
Mind you alot of the cheaper bottled water tends to come from the 'Peckham' spring!
Lucretia_73 28-02-2006, 16:08 Not a fan of tap water. Straight from the tap or chilled it always tastes funny:gag: In contrast bottled water is generally completely tasteless to me and it's boring but bearable if the weather is hot and the water really cold. If I have a choice I'll drink Danone water with the added Calcium - maybe it's the Calcium but for some reason the water tastes kind of creamy to me:huh: which I quite like.
bjshooter 28-02-2006, 16:44 I drink loads of tap water, brita filtered though, it smells like sewers before you filter it.
muddycoffee 28-02-2006, 17:02 The water that comes out of my tap here in woodseats is so nice and clear tasting that I could sell it bottled. the water at hillsborough, banner cross and another part of woodseats isn't as nice, and at my workplace at heeley the water is truly revolting.
If you want to take chlorine taste out of tap water, you need to let it stand for about 24 hours. If you bottle some and put it into the fridge, then that should work. Next day it will taste nicer.

I find myself nodding to this too. I do like the water in Sheffield. I'm with Yorkshire Water. Just the weekend before, I went walking in the Yorkshire Dales. I wonder whether it's from there. Rolling hills with limestone caves. The water does go through underground caverns full of limestones. Think of all the minerals. :) Makes it taste nicer, I think. It's why we have Buxton Water on the mineral water market.
Am not sure if our water is flouridated. Drinking a lot of flouridated water is actually not good for you.
I do drink tap water. I normally boil the water and then bottle that. (Don't ask me why I do that, prob doesn't have any germs in it. It's prob a habit I picked up from my mother.) Sometimes if I'm treating myself, I'd buy this brand of Italian sparkling mineral water to drink. Funny enough, it's often on sale for 3 for 2, cos nobody buys it. It makes a change to drink all the minerals from water than to get it from juice.

It must be the pipes. The water in this bit of Heeley is fantastic. I've noticed as well that bottled water can give you bad wind (e.g. the stuff you get at work in water barrels), but tap water never does!

It depends on what you grew up drinking. I can't stand Sheffield water, I find it too soft, water at "home" filters through chalk hills and thats what I'm used to.
I like not having to descale my kettle but it costs me a fortune in mineral water.
shoeshine 28-02-2006, 19:23 I know that several people on here think Sheffield water is great, and I respect the views posted.
I live in an area within the Sheffield Post Code Zone, but have never lived in Sheffield City per se.
I went on the Severn Trent Internet site this afternoon, and the Yorkshire Water Site too. We pay our Water Bill to Yorkshire Water.....the site tells me we are served by the Aughton Depot.
The map provided for the service area of Aughton is unreadable in determining if we are getting our water from there.
I can also sympathise with the comments of posters criticising the quality of water in Worksop. I also realise that many Sheffield posters seem to give varied accounts of the quality of the water supplied through their taps.
I just can't stand drinking the product coming through the tap at home from Yorkshire Water.....even if I chill it, as has been suggested.
Well, if you've drank water in other areas of the world, it is not that bad. I know I always get a stomach ache from the water in HK. Whenever I see my parents. The tap water runs from the hill. It's countryside.
Anyhow, it's a personal choice.
If I had a choice, I'll live in Italy. Camp right outside the Vatican in a tent. :D I remember that there are pumps dotted round the whole of Rome, and they pump spring water. It tastes delicious. (Yes, water do taste different.) And it's free.
trophyman 28-02-2006, 19:33 theres no taste like tap water in the middle of the night!!!!.
sheffield water is the best in the world.
have you ever tried skegness water UNfiltered????? we forgot to filter it and nearly choked on the limescale!!!!

So..Skegness Tap Water ...Deal or no Deal?.........to paraphrase a recent thread on SF:thumbsup:
CHAIRBOY 28-02-2006, 19:40 I think the tap water in Sheffield is excellent. Willow Water is my favourite bottled version. It comes from Cartmel in the Lake District and was discovered by the monks at the local priory. I think Sainsburys may stock it but it's a luxury when the water in the tap is 'paid' for in the rates.
..... as the tap water at work comes from storage tanks and tastes of dirt and mould. :gag:Eeewww.
I didn't think that was allowed because of the risk of legionella and other such nasties, but apparently it isn't quite verboten according to this government site.http://www.dwi.gov.uk/consumer/faq/dws.shtm
However your emplyer does have a duty to provide water fit for drinking: http://www.hse.gov.uk/contact/faqs/water.htm
Greybeard 01-03-2006, 08:52 The quality of tap water in Sheffield varies according to where you live. From our bedroom window I can see two of the reservoirs that supply our water and it comes straight off the moors around Bradfield.
According to the Water Board technician, who often uses our kitchen tap to test the water quality, the west and north of Sheffield have the best water.
Worst tap water I ever tasted was in Portsmouth, the softest water was in Cornwall where it feels almost slimy. London has probably the worst, - a lot of their water is 're-cycled' :gag:
I drink tap water - I refuse to pay extra for bottled water when the tap water is excellent. I dont like it when it has been stood for any length of time though - it tastes "flat", I have to drink it more or less stood at the tap!
I cant stand that fizzy stuff - it tastes like alka seltzer - really bitter. We are under Severn Trent, cant say I like Yorkshire water as much, I think it must depend on what you are used to. Sheffield water is among the hardest (I think) - in Devon it is really soft - like its got soap in it! I am always glad to get back home for a decent cup of tea!
Sheffield water aint hard ... try London & Lincs for hard . Devon water might be soft but dont taste too good.
BeverleyJ 01-03-2006, 13:57 Why don't you filter the water - filter jug (or we have quite a large ceramic contraption that we use all the time). In the end - or actually quite soon - it's much much cheaper than buying bottled water all the time - and often contributing to the wealth of the multi-national companies.
The filtered water tastes fine - well there's really no taste as far as I'm concerned. And I can certainly taste the difference if I do try water out of a regular tap.
I only drink tap water when its chilled, other than that bottled during the day at work
CanChick 04-03-2006, 23:31 My guess is that if someone bottles some tap water and sticks it in your fridge with a bottle of bottles water, you would not know the difference. Sheffield has wonderful water, if you were in London then I would understand.
You are so right! I was in London first before I arrived in Sheffield and the water in Sheffield is quite lovely (and I drink bottled water back here in Canada).
I rather enjoyed the water in Sheffield actually. It is absolutely horrid in London!
I've been looking at this website today which highlights the dangers of re-using bottles and buying bottled water....... www.wewanttap.com
archaeobard 22-09-2008, 11:20 I love Sheffield water. Sometimes I filter it, but half the time I don't think I need to. I will drink it straight from the tap. Sheffield has fantastic water quality. I don't understand why people spend money on bottled water to be honest if they live here.
brianthedog 22-09-2008, 12:50 I like tap water, but prefer Evian.
splodgeyAl 22-09-2008, 16:37 I recently read that it takes 7 litres of water to manufacture a single 1 litre water bottle, and that America uses around 17 million barrels of oil per year to make water bottles.
