Been meaning to ask this for ages, and finally I have time! :D

In the late 1980's, probably around 1986 - 1988, I was walking up Fulwood Road one Sunday night when I saw what was probably a meteor or comet shoot across the night sky. This comet or whatever was very low, and was an amazing sight.

An elderly gent was walking his dog ahead of me. I was so amazed that I ran up to him to simply say "Wow!!!" He said that his son was an astronomer and would no doubt tell him what it was in the morning. The old gent went on his way.

Moments later 2 jets shot across the sky in what for all the world look like a pursuit of the comet. Then several helicopters followed. I honestly thought we were being invaded (!!!) and ran home. I woke up my mum and told her all about it. She thought I was drunk or insane or both.

The next morning it was mentioned on radio Sheffield at around 6 am, but then it was not mentioned again. No other media covered the story.

Now I may be mad, or deluded, but I'm sure there was some kind of cover up!

It's a long shot I know, but did anyone else on here happen to see theis comet/meteor/UFO way back in the 80's??!!! :)

Your right, it did actually make the news aswell, I think that somewhere over near Stocksbridge it started to come down and eventually somthing came down in a field towards penistone. It was passed off as a light air craft crashing but I also remember a loud noise then a few jets flying over aswell.

Check out the BBC archieves for the time I'm sure look north or calendar reported on it during the early evening bews bulletin.

I remember the object being 'chased' - quite pathetically may I add - by RAF jets. It was definetly 1988 as I'd just moved to the Tithe Barn and was in the garden sorting out the sheds when it happened.

Interestingly enough I actually read something about that online the other day, I can for the life of me remember where but I will try and find out.

It went along the lines of 3 tornado jets chasing a triangle shapped light and Tornado jet was "attacked" and "downed" just outside Sheffield although nothing was reported and it was cast off as a light aircraft crash.

I dont really believe in UFO but just stumbled accross this story the other day very coincidental.

If nothing was reported, who cast it off as a light aircraft crashing? And if nothing was reported why did it make the next days evening news?

I have no idea as I said I dont beleive in stuff like that just saw it on some daft news report on the net by accident (probably a load of tosh) and thought it was something of a coincidence that there was a post on here regarding something that happened in 1988 which I had only read about the other day.

try a search, loads of stuff on Google such as:-

There is one well reasoned argument that started at Parson Cross/Wadsley bridge and seemed to finish on the Derbyshire moors, with lots fo apparently credible witnesses. If It is a hoax it is a well thought out one.

That was in 1997, and known as the Howden Moor Incident (http://www.mysterymag.com/casebook/?page=category&subID=109), so obviolsly not the one in 1988, which probably has an equally reasonable explanation to those that are a little more, shall we say... 'grounded'? ;)

A resume from the SOUTHPORT UFO CONFERENCE 1999

"The real highlights of the conference were the lectures by Dr David Clarke and Andy Roberts. Dr Clarke described the Howden Moor incident of 1997 when police and rescue teams spent about œ50,000 of public money searching for a non-existent crashed aircraft, and all because the Ministry of Defence refused to admit that one of their aircraft had illegally broken the sound barrier while flying at a low altitude over the area. He pointed out that the case never involved any suggestion of UFO activity until some dubious characters started spreading fantastic and unfounded rumours. However, there were a few loose ends, including a low flying light aircraft, which was videotaped. Attempts to identify this aircraft were unsuccessful."

Ah but the 1988 episode involved a ball of fire with flames shooting out of the back of it! If not a meteor, I suppose it could have been an RAF plane in the process of crash landing. This would also explain the "chasing" jets and helicopters.

It's bugged me for years. Well, since 1988! Just wish the truth really was out there! :D

Just realised that if this was a Hollywood movie, I'd probably disappear in mysterious circumstances tonight! If you don't hear from me again, I've been abducted by the FBI/Aliens/MI6 (delete as neccesary). :hihi:

If it had been a comet the chances of a jet chasing itt would be a laughing stock.
The speed of them things amounts to thousands of miles per hour.
I think it would have been a metoerite as they land on earth every day.
