Should we boycott the Dev Cat in support of Robbie Lovin? I know he's a pratt of the highest order but he's a harmless pratt.

I vote we boycott the Dev Cat until they welcome RL back with open arms.

What did he do

He was shouting his head off, swearing and carrying on and generally being what a lot of people considered offensive.

I was sat next to him last night and to be honest I felt more than a little intimidated by his actions and language but didn't dare say anything cos he's bigger than me and I didn't want to end up on the business end of a smack in the face.

I think you ought to hear it from RL himself Robbo, after all he is the injured party, and as for Rich's comments, I was with Robbie, Spyro and a few more people for most of the afternoon and none of them were either loud or being objectionable, and I have seen far worse language used by Rich on this forum. eg FFS.

Thought you were Mr Karate?

As far as I know if Robbie got himself banned that's his short comings.
No offence robbie and I'm sure you're an alright bloke but everyone needs to learn their lesson at some point and I'm certainly not going to stop going in Dev Cat (I like there beer) because someone got barred by their own doings.

If he appologised to the venue I'm sure they'd be reasonable and let him back in.

Why boycott the Dev Cat if someone through their own behaviour and actions got themselves barred (and that's jumping to the conclusion that anyone was barred in this case!) Also if you are obnoxious enough to have the police called by the barstaff then I think it's difficult to be described as 'the injured party'!!!

Robbie was a bit loud but he's not a violent guy, I don't think you need to worry about him smacking you. But if he was upsetting you, why did you sit next to him? We had several tables - you could have easily moved - like a few other people did.

it looks like the dev cat thread in notices has been pulled... so, I'll have to post this in here.

I was there... and robbie had, by this time got a little erm.... how do they phrase it in the papers when a celeb gets in that state? " tired and emotional". There was, tbh, a fair bit of "shoutage" going on from rob...

he had upset the barmaid so much, with his comments, that she would not come over to the area we all were in to collect glasses.

The main fella behind the bar had asked robbie not to be so rowdy, at least a couple of times, and to keep it down a bit. which robbie didn't do, so he said that he's be asked to leave and/ or backup would be called.

I tried to make a bit of joke of it with the young barmaid who had been upseet by robbie's remarks. I said,to her, "look, don't let it faze you! he's like this with everyone, *chuckle* - His pickup line is 'You're my type of woman...' 'what? brunette?' 'no, breathing!' !!"

Unfortunately, she had been so upset by what had gone on, and she failed to find a funny side, in either robbie's behaviour, or in my joke.

Now, I go in the dev a lot, as my "local" for forum meets and mah-jong, as well as socially, outside the forum. the staff there are very good, helpful, and pleasant, as well as being knowlegeable about the beers there. I don't think that the barmaid would have "raised hummer" about this incident had it not been somethng that affected her.

people people people, i dont see what the fusss is al about, i bumped in to kirky on dinner today and we had a good laugh about it, its not that bad at all and i think people make more out of it than actually there is.

He was shouting his head off, swearing and carrying on and generally being what a lot of people considered offensive.

I was sat next to him last night and to be honest I felt more than a little intimidated by his actions and language but didn't dare say anything cos he's bigger than me and I didn't want to end up on the business end of a smack in the face.

come on rich, don't even give it that, i tried talking to you last night as you never talk to anybody really.

how was i offensive to you in particular?

sorry if my language was bad last night, it happens when i get drunk. but to say i could even hit you is out of this world,

If he appologised to the venue I'm sure they'd be reasonable and let him back in.

just before i was leaving i went to speak to the person who claimed to be the landlord, you know to say i had no hard feelings about whating me out etc, and that i was off, but he would not have any of it. but thats his perogative.

themselves barred (and that's jumping to the conclusion that anyone was barred in this case!)

well when somebody says to you "you're barred" i think that substantiates the claims i am in fact barred.

but to cap all this off, who really cares?? even if i was never to go again it wouldnt bother anyone so its unimportant.

to be fair i thought it was harsh to ask me to leave, perhaps i did deserve it though. but if thats the case then i should be banned from every bar/club in britain, and so should a lot of people

with regards to barmaid PT, i said nothing to offend her, perhaps i was quite raucous untoward her, but its nothing compared to previous barmaids at dev cat have not had. im not condoning my behaviour one bit, all im saying is, things could be a lot worse, its not like i insulted her, nor made any approach to her, i said maybe a few comments, but she just laughed them off, and had she said she was not comfortable with them, i would have apologised straight away. im not as bad a person as a lot will have you believe.

I take on board what you are saying, robbie. some (maybe most ?) folks would have laughed it off, or taken it in good part, but some wouldn't.

however, the barmaid was quite young, and maybe she hadn't got the skills, self confidence, or maybe the life-experience to respond directly to you...?

the shouting could have been misinterpreted as agressive behaviour, and it's possible she could have been intimidated by that?

whilst taking on board your comments, if that is the worst she comes along being a barmaid then she will be very lucky.

as far as im concerned, i was not rude to her, or OTT to her, if she cant take that then she should not be a barmaid in the first place

She shouldn't have to go to work to get any sort of intimidating behaviour whether you find it offensive or not, which is something you're failing to grasp.

Maybe she doesn't have as much life experience to cope right now and given time she'll develop them (as we all have to start somewhere) but whether you're drunk or not is no excuse for making someone feel uncomfortable so take it on the chin and move on.

see now we start with the insults dont we, really what is the point in doing so?

anyways what i say is correct, if she is easily offended which has proved to be the case, then she shouldn't be a barmaid, because fro time to time you are gonna get generally rowdy lads. but as i say, had i known i had offended i would have apologised.

surely you can understand with your great mighty knowledge, or is my "small mind" not coming across right?

No but your "quick wit" is obviously not quite on form tonight Robbie.
I think you're still not managing to see what I'm saying if you think I'm making an insult rather than an observation of what is clearly small minded and quite ignorant method of thinking on your part.

I'll say again, she's young as PT states and might not have the life experience as those of us who are older can see through. That doesn't mean she can't do a good job as a bar made. Clearly you were asked on a few occasions to tone it down but failed to do so. That shows irresponsibility with your drink robbie.

Again she doesn't come to work to get jeered at by rowdy lads, the Dev Cat is not that sort of venue to start with. Obviously some things aren't sinking in here robbie and maybe I'm talking to a brick wall who'll never learn but clearly you haven't got the life experience some in here give you credit for if you honestly believe what you're spouting off.

I won't take any sort of language towards me, or to any of the staff working with me. If they get offended because of something a customer has said, and they feel action needs to be taken then action will be taken.

I'm good at my job, but I won't take no s*** from nobody, nobody in any job should have to put up with swearing, or loud rowdy behaviour and neither should any customer nearby.

However, I wasn't there so I won't pass judgement on your particular situation.

Robbie Loving

it was not mentioned before i was asked to leave, that the barmaid felt uncomfortable. i was tottaly unaware of this. as ive said previously i dont condone my actions last night, but a lot of this is taking it all out of proportion. yes i may have been a bit rowdy, but it certainly was in no way threatening to any body at all. perhaps the way i am does not suit everyone, or in fact anyone, but i certainly never intent to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

you personally are jumping to conclusions from what other people have said. its understandable that you will because from what i believe, you used to own your own premises and was in fact a doorman, but like i say, you wasn't there. anyways, im gonna leave it at that, cause were going round in circles, no doubt you shall come out with something else. but to be honest your opinion on this matter counts for nothing as you did not witness what happened. not meaning that insultive or in a smart way, its just the truth

My judgement is based on your comments nothing more, I don't need to be there to understand what you're trying to say, which has been pointed out to you is not the correct attitude to take.

I haven't met any of you at the Dev Cat as yet - or anywhere for that matter! (as far as i know...)

I haven't spoken to Robbie, nor do I know much about him. All I can say is that from his posts, and persona here on the forum - he seems, as Owdlad says, a genuinely decent person.
A lot of people have got out of hand after a few too many drinks. Infact, my best mate is one of the kindest, most generous and decent blokes you will ever meet - but give him even one too many pints and he's gone - ANYTHING can come out of his mouth.

As for swearing, I don't know many people whom don't swear in every day conversation. They are just words after all.

I haven't attended a Dev Cat meet (yet!), but I don't think one bad night is enough to justify a ban.

Based on what I've read so far, I don't blame the proprietor for kicking Robbie Lovin out temporarily. But the barkeep seems like a hard arse for not accepting RL's apology... He could have said, "You're welcome to come back when you're not drunk and loud." That seems reasonable to me.

you cant be real anyways..... you dont judge people with out meeting them, thats not the right sort of attitude that comes with this forum :hihi:
I think you've misunderstood what Nate was saying, Robbie. The way I read it was that he was saying that you were a genuine person, and that he had read threads to which you had contributed and, from them, had formed this opinion. He wasn't having a go at you.

I've met you Robbie and, from what I saw, you just become over-expressive when you're drunk, but you weren't trying to be offensive. In fact, you were quite entertaining that evening. However, I can't speak for a young barmaid, who doesn't have a lot of experience. Some people can see banter for what it is straight away, but others need to get to know the person before they see it.

Just a suggestion, and I know that the bar manager wasn't interested at the time: how's about leaving things a couple of days to cool down, and then going to the Dev Cat and having a quiet word with the manager (and possibly the barmaid), to try to settle things.

I dont know the full facts and I dont know whether Robbie has done wrong but if he has acted like a yob- then I think he deserves it.

I have never been to one of these meets either, so I can't really pass judgement. But having read through this thread I have notice that it is only the people that weren't there that are giving Robbie a hard time. It seems that the majority of the people who were actually there feel that the landlord was slightly harsh with his reaction. Maybe this tells us something:)

Yes, the landlord seemed harsh. I was there and didn't see any particularly outrageous behaviour and although I don't know the full story, Robbie was definitely being a bit lairy (but a lot of us have been after a few gins).

Unfortunately refusing to leave when asked is not a good idea, especially when the feds have been called. Fortunately he left before the police arrived, and they were quite friendly and gave the forummers a wave (and there was a good turn out). Hopefully the relationship between SF and the Dev Cat has not been effected. And no, there won't be a boycott (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=93038). Not from me and many others anyway.

Robbie was a bit loud yes, but I didn't think the things I heard him say to the bar staff were offensive. Maybe he said other things that I didn't hear, I don't know.

What I do know is that, if the Devonshire Cat thought he was too drunk, they shouldn't have served him more beer.

I also think that if the bar manager cannot persuade one drunk person to leave the pub without calling the police, then he should consider employing door staff. I certainly feel, based on what I saw, that his reaction was over the top and the situation could have been handled a lot better. It is not the first time I have seen this member of staff get into a confrontation with a customer.

As for boycotting the Dev Cat, maybe we should. Not because of Robbie but we could find a pub that's a bit cheaper and stays open later than 10:30.

Let's be honest Strix, a busy city centre boozer is no place for a dog, and you have to have one rule and stick to it.

As for Robbie, I'm sure he's grown up enough to go say sorry when there's a quiet moment. Stuff happens (jeepers I wish I was a bit more perfect ;)) but the staff shouldn't have to deal with it under any circumstances, and he's said as much. It takes a bigger man to apologise than to boycott it . Go for it Robbie :)

There was a problem with the compressor, last night, which meant that certain of the pumps were not operational.

Yes, it was a bit of a shame, as the good rep, and the popularity of the dev is based on the good atmosphere, and the brilliant choice of real ales. It was a little disappointing, but, meh, it happens... *shrug*

It was not really something that could be helped, nor was it the barstaff's collective faults. they were waiting for a repair (I think it was only the guest ale pump that was kaput)

there were more than enough alternatives mind you...

Despite the draught beers being out of order, there were plenty of bottled beers, as well as a couple of speciality keg beers that were in the "cellar" room beside the bar. I believe that the lagers (stella etc) and the weisserbiers were not affected, and soft drinks were available in copious amounts...
