The council are running these areas down. The houses will be knocked down to make way for new houses.

these estates are coming down. the council are selling off the land to private enterprises for housing which will be able to be purchased...

At Shirecliffe - the houses are coming down due to people not wanting to live on top of a toxic wastedump.

You wouldn't be happy if you'd bought one of those new private houses on the site of the old college - once the land around them becomes cleared!

Anyone know what's happening to all the boarded up house near Pitsmoor Rd? There seems to be a whole estate which is boarded up?

Its a mix - some of these house are to be demolished, others are being sold off under the homesteading scheme. They are typically houses that need some amount of work doing to them (often they have no central heating etc.) but the council can't afford to renovate them and then re-use them as council houses so are selling them as private residences.

If any of those houses are being sold of privately the people who are buying them would have to be crazy.
(The ones between Pitsmoor Rd and Rutland Rd, I think; looking on multimap its Woodside Lane).
I've noticed some are being demolished on the edge of the estate but that's one big estate.

Hi

I live on Shirecliffe and people do still want to live there, the reason for the houses coming down is so that the greedy council can get lots of money by selling the land to private devopers. The council say that they cannont afford to bring the houses upto standard. so they are going to know them down.

If all the houses that are been knocked down are going to be replaced by private housing surely that is good for the area? Hardly running it down is it, when council houses in a pretty bad state are been replaced by brand new homes.

Hi

I am not saying it's a bad thing but the people who live there and many have lived there all their lives could have had to move to other areas and they would not be able to afford the houses that will be built. These people have been made to move they had no choice. The council have lied to them all the way through the process, they were told that they could move to better areas and they had a choice but when people asked for a house in a better area they were told No!

The Vic Hallam estates at Birley will be the next ones to be boarded up. Anyone know what sort of housing will be going up there? Private or Council?
I'm equally sad and happy, I was brought up on there in the 60s and 70s and have great memories but they've really become run down of late because they've not been maintained. What happens to people who've bought there houses, because I bet they're not offering a great deal for them.

If you have bought your house the council will buy it off you if it is going to be knocked down but you need to hold out for a good price, some people on shirecliffe only got £23000 for their homes but people who kept sayning no and held out for a good price, have be offered up to £60000.

My mates Dad bought his on the Birley estate and it's like a palace inside. He needs to get a good price because at his age he's going to find it hard to get a decent replacement. I just hope they don't drive him out by letting all the surrounding houses go to rack and ruin.. which they seem to be doing.

Wasn't really looking at it from the point of view of people who are been forced to move out. That is pretty bad really, I originally assumed they were getting rid of them through natural wastage ie as people move out new people dont move in. So the council are actually forcing people to move out it certain circumstances? Is this when you get a row of about 6 houses with only one in the middle still occupied? I saw one like this that was sold privately recently, I can't imagine who would want to buy it. I have recently bought a house just the other side of Herries road which I gather is classed as Southey Green. That is why I am interested.
