View Full Version : Suggestion to bomb Sheffield City Centre
Did anyone read the interview with Adrian Edmondson from The Young Ones, Bottom etc. in the Independent of Sunday yesterday?
When asked what building he would like bombed, he suggested that the whole of Sheffield centre should be bombed because of the bad architecture!
Perhaps we should invite him to visit our fine city.
DaBouncer 27-02-2006, 14:20 So we can kick his ****ing head in you mean?
RobWilson 27-02-2006, 14:28 He's been here a lot, so obviously knows what he's on about.
He gave a nice speech at the Radio 2 Folk Awards last month, where he presented Kate Rusby with an award. His anecdote was all about meeting her at Sheffield City Hall.
Anyway, he can start with 1 St. Paul's Parade. What a mess!

I agree that 1 St Paul's Parade is a disgrace and Sheffield Council should hang it's head in shame.
Nevertheless, I don't think his comments can be justified.
Hows about what's left of that god awful black eyesore that used to be Bed/Music Factory? They've knocked most of it down but as far as I know the most ugly bit is still standing. WHHHHYY!!!!! :gag:

Can't agree on St Paul's Parade, it looks a million times better. Remember the scruffy Army Stores at the bottom corner and the Herbal Stores not to mention Alf Golde's dancing studio. A Laura Ashley shop in the Prudential part hardly lets the city down does it?

mmm, maybe we're getting confused. I think we are talking about the new office/retail space being built now opposite the new hotel - actually it is probably called 1 St Paul's Place rather than Parade.
merlin_7799 27-02-2006, 15:26 Ooh let's start with the Arts Tower!! I really despise that ugly, drab, glass clad thing!
I remember when there was that bomb threat last summer. A colleague of mine questioned why a terrorist would bother with Sheffield, as nobody would be able to tell the difference afterwards.
I love (parts of) Shef centre's architecture really. Did make me laugh though. :hihi:
I'm warming to st pauls place - I think it will look a lot less out of place once the other buildings are up - and the macdonalds hotel looks fantastic.
Also, can someone refresh my memory - I remember an 'army surplus stores' store from some vauge long forgotten memory - where abouts was it exactly?

I think that was where the Ha! Ha! Bar! (exclamation marks in right places??) is now
Wooohhh there!!! We may all have to be a little careful or Mr Blaire will lock us up under his new laws. We might be encouraging terrorism!
It reminds me of the scene in Easy Rider when Jack Nicholson makes the following speech: -George: You know, this used to be a helluva good country. I can't understand what's gone wrong with it.
Billy: Huh. Man, everybody got chicken, that's what happened, man. Hey, we can't even get into like, uh, second-rate hotel, I mean, a second-rate motel. You dig? They think we're gonna cut their throat or something, man. They're scared, man.
George: Oh, they're not scared of you. They're scared of what you represent to 'em.
Billy: Hey man. All we represent to them, man, is somebody needs a haircut.
George: Oh no. What you represent to them is freedom.
Billy: What the hell's wrong with freedom, man? That's what it's all about.
George: Oh yeah, that's right, that's what it's all about, all right. But talkin' about it and bein' it - that's two different things. I mean, it's real hard to be free when you are bought and sold in the marketplace. 'Course, don't ever tell anybody that they're not free 'cause then they're gonna get real busy killin' and maimin' to prove to you that they are. Oh yeah, they're gonna talk to you, and talk to you, and talk to you about individual freedom, but they see a free individual, it's gonna scare 'em.
Billy: Mmmm, well, that don't make 'em runnin' scared.
George: No, it makes 'em dangerous.

There cries a thinking man.
He's not far off the mark really. I went through the city centre on the bus today for the first time in a couple of years, and what a tip it is. The whole of Eyre street could do with flattening and rebuilding. The Roxy building, the building next to it, everything on Angel street and the castle market area are all eyesores.
The only nice, modern looking buildings i saw are The winter gardens, millennium gallery etc, the very buildings which a lot on here don't like.
I'd like to see a modern gateway to Sheffield, lots of modern architecture with tall glass office and living buildings, nice shops, restaurants and bars.
unfortunately i can't see it happening, i think a lot of Sheffielders are too stuck in their ways, hate change and have no adventure in them whatsoever.
Too many would rather walk around the fish markets and the Moor than a modern city.
The Council website has some promising info which may improve the way people look at Sheffield when they arrive on the train at the moment, along with stuff on litter and removing abandoned cars. So at least someone is looking at it but as usual with Sheffield it will probably be ages before plans reach reality

No problesm with him saying it at all. I dont entirly agreee to it, but when we have a bloke like Adrain saying something like that we do have to listen to the reason why.

Can't agree on that either, the very ugly egg box, a temporary open air car park and the wedding cake have been replaced with modern light structures that will not age in the way that their predecessors did. We have yet to see what the parking arrangements are but so far so good.
Maybe he's bitter because he's not funny anymore.
LordChaverly 28-02-2006, 09:23 At the risk of tempting fate, Sheffield has so far escaped both terrorist bombs and major race riots or ethnic disturbances.
I remember wondering during the height of the IRA bombing campaign whether Sheffield would suffer the same fate as Birmingham or Manchester. I'm not entirely sure if the pro-Sinn Feinn sympathies of some Labour councillors at the time (some of whom wanted to invite Gerry Adams to speak here) had anything to do with it - probably not, but you never know.

I did, thats why I asked, I couldn't place it in my head (even with the description of bottom corner) but MrH answered it for me :)
spangler 28-02-2006, 10:47 That's what I love about Sheffield - someone says something you don't like and they get offered violence - wow free speech or what???? Grow up and accept not everyone agrees with you.

I agree that people shouldn't get offered violence.
However, we all have the right to free speech and therefore should be able to discuss and disagree with Adrian Edmundson's comments - surely this is what the Sheffield Forum discussion board is about?
up and accept not everyone agrees with you.
Or just accept that sheffield city centre is awful... although he obviously hasn't been to Bracknell, because that is a real ****-tip, and would be on the top of my bomb list.
chris156 28-02-2006, 22:55 The city centre has a few lovely old buildings (e.g. Town Hall, some of the banks on High Street), but there's plenty of 1960s monstrosities. Quite often the two things are next to each other...it's a real hotch-potch.
It's weird how you can just turn off the city's main street and end up in that area where Castle Market and Wilko's and that is, which is like some scabby back alley in Afghanistan...
The worst building in the city is definitely the Arts Tower...a filthy great block of concrete and glass. And that rickety old lift needs to be condemned...it's actually illegal to make them any more.
DaBouncer 28-02-2006, 22:57 There cries a thinking man.
Thanks.
I prefer an emotive man myself... I think when required, I act when I'm empowered.

Ever heard of a spell checker?

I have tried to make the self same point before but just because I am in my 50's I and my generation are held responsible for the ills of the 60's (I was 12 when they started). If I say that the market areas were cleaner and more interesting in the 50's and 60's folk who were not around then are very quick to dissagree with me.
The problem is that you have to be around my age or older to remember the city in its former glory. I am very pro the St Pauls complex even though there does not appear to be any parking. The problem is that if you go to the top of St Pauls Parade and cross Pinstone St you find yourself on the awful Cross Burgess St and what is the actual Burgess St pretending to be?. Conversally if you walk down and turn right at the HA HA Bar you find youself in crap land once again.
Sheffield City Council could have squared the centre off in its rebuilding programme after the war but failed to grasp the nettle. At least there appears to be some attempt to sort things out but when you balance the few good developments against the crap they have a long way to go. Much is being made of the redevelopment of the old education buildings on Leopold St, and quite right to. But what does it have next to it? Fountain Precinct, what was top class office's but now has easy in easy out leases and the other side of the road is an eyesore.
We are the 5th largest city in the land and we deserve a city centre to be proud of, unfortunately it's not happened yet.
Tintsexpert 01-03-2006, 12:47 I say we invite him up & let him push the plunger, Ok some of the new buildings are good but lets face it, we are not going to win any awards are we? For the most part it's dirty & run down, yes there are some pockets of fabulous buildings, but it's a tip on the whole. Never ending road works, roads so badly maintained you NEED a 4x4,
The council's of the past had government to fight, how this city looked got lost in those battles, You remember, like making sheffield a nuclear free zone, world student games, to name a few!!!!!!!!!
Sheffield *USED* to have some nice/ one off pieces of architecture. I don't like the city centre as much as I did as a kid. I miss the eggbox.. :0(

Eggbox was cool. They should have re-clad it in some kind of shimmering white polycarbonate resin to make it look like a moon-base on Space:1999.
