View Full Version : Pipe smoking

Hi All,

I've been toying with the idea if ditching my weapon of choice, the trusty roll up and entering the big boys realm of smoking a pipe. I'm quite taken with the notion as it seems to be more refined than clutching a grubby dog end, I recently read the Pythons biography and was impressed with some photos of Graham Chapman with his pipe elegantly protuding from his mouth. To me it just seems more mature than sucking craftily on my trademark rollie like a naughty schoolboy, I like the idea of being able to just sit and puff on a pipe occasionally pausing to relight the bowl, turn the page of the newspaper and pass the afternoon in a contented fashion

My dilema is this, At 29 am I too young to take up such a thing? Would a 6'2 skinhead look ridiculous smoking a pipe? Is the pipe solely the preserve of the older generations and is it a tool of a bygone age?

All advice will be gratefully recieved (apart from the inevitable anti smoking ones, I know I should give up but everyone needs at least one vice).

Thanks and regards

SV

By switching to a pipe, you will open yourself to the infinite possibilities of the double-entendre, viz, "rough shag", "fill my pipe", erm, I can't think of any others.

Pipe smoking is a little bit of an art, every thing slows down, with the prep &packing, slow light makes it more relaxing. The only reason i stoped it became a safety problem at the plant where i worked. You will probley go though many different brands befor hitting the perfect one for you.Buy a high quality briar wood pipe ,that will take a few days to break in.Age no problem aslong as you dont mind the girl friend asking you to smoke outside.

Swan_Vesta, forget the briar pipes, they're for cissies.:)

Make your own.............

How about going the whole hog and use a "Clay Pipe" like this one.

My husband has always smoked a pipe, trouble is he hardly ever has it lit, so therefore, I think its just like a babies dummy to him, 'a comforter'
I much prefer the fact that he smokes a pipe to cigarettes, and you are right, it is a ritual, cleaning it, packing it and eventually lighting it.

Go for it - & try a nice tobacco. I prefer coffee-caramel. You can get it from King Size in the Market.

Thanks all,

Your comments have steeled my resolve to start smoking a pipe in a true "Chap" fashion although I may have to consider the deer stalker optional Sid.

I may have to learn to walk before I learn to run with your suggested pipe Shoeshine (and even then also remove all of the drugs from the pipe) :hihi:

Many thanks again, If you see a portly lad in his late twenties with a shaven head, cheery grin and sporting a pipe then that'll be me :)

Why don't you get with the times and buy yourself a nice big bong :D
Seriously though I think you could make smoking a pipe cool!

Personally I find the smell of pipes vile and makes me heave.

I'm in no way saying stop smoking, freedom of choice and all that.

but if I was to start smoking again, I would be going with J-blaze's weapon of choice :)

Indeed, I did have one my friend brought me back from nepal some years ago, similiar to this but quite large with four pipes, and the bottom was glass with beautiful engraving

I've smoked a pipe for more than 30 years. I suggest you start with a cheap briar pipe with a largish bowl. With a briar you need to burn it in and build up a layer of carbon on the inside of the bowl so that it smokes cool, - a small penknife is essential to keep this layer of carbon from becoming too thick, - ie you need to ream the bowl out at regular intervals. Buy a few packets of pipe-cleaners too, - you'll need them ;)

A slow burning tobacco is best, something like Condor or St Bruno, buy flake and rub it yourself - fine shredded tobacco tends to burn quick and hot for a newbie and with that coffee-caramel stuff you'll smell like the only gay in the village :D

Learning to smoke 'dry' is probably the hardest part, dribbling down the stem and into the bowl makes pipe-smoking messy and smelly. Keeping them clean is essential.

If you make a go of it and find you enjoy it, buy a couple more pipes and smoke them in rotation, pipes need a rest; - later you might like to think about buying a Meerschaum pipe. Good Meerschaums are expensive but smoke much cooler than briars.

I've finally done it!

King Size on the market sorted me out with a nice briar pipe and some vanilla tobacco, so just in time for the smoking ban I've started smoking my pipe.

When you see a large shaven headed gent puffing away on his pipe come on over and say howdy - Chances are it'll be me.

Vanilla ? :gag: That won't grow any hairs on your chest !

You'll need to dress appropriately for that. I'd suggest sandals with socks, a pair of those baggy knee-length shorts with lots of pockets, a red and black horizontally striped jersey and an onion-sellers berét.

Then when folk are looking around for the cause of the smell - they'll spy you and not be in the least surprised :D

Hopefully you'll progress onto a tobacco more in keeping with old tweed jacket and corduroy trousers, polished brogues and some decent headgear (or you could just let your hair grow) ;)

But welcome to the club anyway

Remember not to light it up in the car when you're driving!

If the Airbag inflates.............:wow:

How much did this pipe cost? I don't actually smoke but I always quite liked the smell of a pipe. Maybe I'll take it up too as an occasional hobby. And at only 28 you'll not be the only young pipe smoker in the village.

£5.99 and a further £4.30 for an Oz of tasty, tasty tobacco - I fully recommend it. There'll be an army of Graham Chapman clones walking about the city if I have anything to do with it :D

And what if it isn't!?

Maybe you could wear something prominent, like the before mentioned beret, or a nice twirly ended moustache.

If I could grow a decent tash Then I'd grow one like James Hetfield - Meanwhile I suspect that there are sufficiently few large, shaven headed pipe smokers to make my identification easy

Now you've started to smoke a pipe, I do hope you've started the "pipe prod" as well!

My brother switched from ciggies to a pipe years back, because he reckoned it helped you make your point in an argument more forcefully. He'd noticed chaps in the local with pipes invariably stressed their opinions by "prodding" towards their opponents with the mouthpiece of their pipe. If they were being really vehement, they'd actually touch the person they were arguing with on the shoulder!

I started to watch pipe smokers after that, and he was right.:hihi:

Don't smoke it without a drink. Beer and Tea are both suitable IMO.

I tried it for a bit as a callow youth, but simply couldn't get the hang of it consistently enough. If I wasn't forever relighting the thing, I was gobbing out the acrid brown fluid that seemed to spray into my mouth with every puff.

The times I did manage to fill, light and get one going & as the fug filled my mouth and nose, the nicotine kick caused me to see multi-coloured lines dancing in the air and almost pass out. A bit like snus.

I often wonder if the old men I see smoking half ounces of gold block at a time are actually hallucinating into their beer. They all seem to be smiling.

That indeed is a fine tash, altho I was thinking more along the lines of a Windsor Davies/Dali medly.

I shall certainly keep my eye out for the above
