cgksheff 27-02-2006, 12:43 Police hunt for missing teenagers
POLICE in Sheffield are searching for two teenagers - one of whom has been missing 10 days and the other seven.
Chelsea Cookson, aged 13, was reported missing from her home in Wincobank on February 17 and David Barszczewski, also 14, was reported missing from Arbourthorne last Monday.
They are not thought to be together.
Officers say they are particularly concerned about David's welfare in the cold weather. He has some learning difficulties and is considered vulnerable.
He was wearing a dark blue baseball cap, a navy hooded sweatshirt, light blue/grey tracksuit bottoms and dark trainers.
The teenager has brown hair, is of a slim to medium build and around 5ft 5in tall.
Anyone with inf ormation about David should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 2202020 or the Duty Sergeant's office on 0114 296 3432.
Information about Chelsea's whereabouts should be passed on to Attercliffe Police Station on 0114 2964305 or to the Sheffield One Safer Neighbourhood Unit on 0114 2964266.

Obviously NOT a parent?
What does Chelsea look like has you haven't said.. Also how can you say she should be put in care because she is missing or maybe run away? That means that she might have some issues that has worried her, made her scared or felt she needed to go away to protect herslef. Anything could have made her run away (thats if she has) also if she has been taken or something then that also is not her fault so she shouldn't be "put in care" i think you should not judge until you know the facts! Also if she was placed in care and wanted to run away again im sure she could.

I do not wish to comment on this particular girl's cirumstances, but I do wish to make some general observations in relation to this post.
Putting kids in care is not the solution to runaway children. Most children in care run away from their foster home or children's home at some point in time. Some do it repeatedly. Studies of runaway childen in care show that most of them had a history of running away from home before they were put in care! But running away from home is usually not an isolated problem, but
symptomatic of other deeper, family problems and issues. Sometimes this may just be teenage rebelliousness. Sometimes it may be because of child abuse.
Runaway children is a more common phenomena than might at first be realised by the general public. I would estimate that, as I type this, there are probably several hundred runaway children on police files tonight around the country. By tomorrow morning, a substantial number will have been located. Most will have returned of their own accord. Some will be found by relatives or friends, and some by the police actively searching for them.
In my last job, I participated in developing a joint police & social services response to runaway children. Only those children who were regarded as vulnerable (e.g., due to age, medical concerns, first time runaway, length of time missing, in danger of prostitution, or similar) would ever be reported to the media. Such vulnerable children are, fortunately, a minority amongst the hundreds of kids who go missing every day of the week.
The policy I helped develop included an interview with each runaway child as and when they were found, in an attempt to guage the reasons for going missing, and to try and address any problems in an effort to dissaude the child from repeating this worrying behaviour. If child abuse was uncovered, then appropriate measures were taken to protect the child.
Chelsea Described in star as:
A white girl, around 5 feet, dlim and was last seen wearing three quarter length blue jeans, white trainers with a black nike tick and a black bomber jacket with a motif of a golden eagle across the back.
is it just me or are those descriptions a bit vague?? especially the young boy.....trainers, hooded top...could be any of the 30 or so 5'5" lads that have walked past me today...
hope they both turn up safe.

Jimbob1989 05-03-2006, 00:32 :| If someone runs away from home, should as much as possible be done to make sure it doesn't happen again and do kids who run away from home for the sake of it not realise the preasure it puts on the parents too.

Runaway children is a description which covers a number of activities. Missing children is a more accurate description.
This ranges from rebellious teenagers who stay out beyond the time stipulated by their parents, including being away from home for a matter of hours, overnight, or even longer. Some children actually do run away because of emotional problems, or other difficulties. Some are kids who stay out exceptionally late and frankly are up to no good (commiting burglary, or twocking, i.e., taking away a vehicle without the owner's consent, etc.). Some run away due to unhappiness at home, and usually try to reach a relative living some distance from home (e.g., a divorced parent). Only an exceptional few do it for a thrill or for the adventure - and you usually read about them turning up in some foreign country.
I've never met a kid yet who ran away from home "for the sake of it". There is always an underlying cause. Despite the best efforts of family, friends and agencies (police, social workers, school, etc.) to dissuade this kind of behaviour, it is impossible to stop this activity unless the individual child or young person either receives help for the underlying problem which triggers this behaviour, or recognises the potential harm they may place themselves in and stops their behaviour. The only other possible alternative, leg irons,
doesn't seem practical somehow.
yes she does go to hinde house school,
dynamicdebz 07-03-2006, 20:23 Chelsea has now returned home safe & well according to tonights Star. She has been in Leeds!

Sorry but I dont agree how can a stranger comment? Have u ever thought she could be being bullied or worse abducted!!
Guess who didnt read the final post that said Chelsea was home & well!
However I still feel people judge without thought I ran away from home but not because I was a delinquent or my parents had no control but because I was bullied at school & to scared to tell anyone!

Putting a child that obvioulsy has issues in care is not really the way forward. The parents maybe need to sit down with this girl and sort out whatever it is that is making her run away. Putting her in care is just pushing the problem onto someone else IMO
