Do you study there? what do you think of it? What didn't you like about it?

:o

I graduated from there with a BSc in Computer Science in 2000 and I think it's great! :D

The student union has great facilities and the university owned accommodation is very good - all within a pretty good distance of the main buildings so you don't have to go far if you don't want!

The bars and club nights available at the union, together with those offered by clubs and pubs in the area make for an exceptional nightlife too.

All the above in the middle of a great city like Sheffield made it my first choice when applying to universities and I can honestly say that I'm very glad I ended up there! (And liked Sheffield so much, I'm still here - like many other graduates!)

I fully agree, it being my alma mater. Tho' Sheffield Uni is my wife's.

They used to say Uni for research, Hallam for jobs. Is that still true/valid?

:D

Probably. Hallam certainly seem to teach more useful stuff on their courses. (I'm thinking of computer related courses in particular.) Some of the Sheffield Uni ones are still too hung up on theory rather than practical application of skills.

Well thanks for that insightful comment, some evidence perhaps? :?

Why would I lie? I went to The University of Sheffield... and in my experience, I can honestly say that what I've said is true!

(Let's hope richardwright doesn't behave on this forum like he did on mine )

Law degree at the Uni.

Masters in broadcast journalism at Hallam.

Job soon to come...hopefully. Both unis have their merits, but Sheffield Uni is definitely superior in the academic stakes.

There are definitely a few more thick planks at Hallam, but, then again, the women are a LOT nicer. No hairy legs there.

Dropped out of BSc Genetics at Sheffield, didn't like the place, too many stuck-up Southerners. Mind you, my stuck-up southerner best friend thought the same too!

Eventually did BSc Science Education at Hallam - much better.

I'm now doing MSc Computing in Wolverhampton, which I like cos it reminds me of Hallam quite a bit!!

(BTW, got AABC at A-level so Hallam was by no means the 'best' I could do!)

I'm doing a postgraduate degree at Sheffield University. I've been impressed with the academic standards in my department and the university facilities in general.

I can't comment on Hallam however - I guess both are excellent in different ways, for different things and we're lucky to have the pick of two such great universities in our city.

Wow everyones doing computer courses! Geeks! Im doing a course where you actually learn something of use to people at hallam and its a really good uni with lots of good courses to choose from although sheffield has the reputation and is a brilliant med school and its my dream to study there one day.

I'm a final year Engineer at Sheffield and have thoroughly enjoyed my last 3 years here.

It's a great very chilled city, and the rivalry between Hallam and Uni is only friendly banter (isn't it?).

You could do a lot worse than any course that takes your fancy in Sheffield.

I did a BSc in Human Communication at Uni of Sheffield, although my most treasured memories were the extra curricular activities that the Union was really good at supporting.

I helped run a few Rag events and my finest hours were co-organising then co-ordinating 2 comic relief fashion shows in 1999 and 2001. Heaps of fun and totally impossible without the Unions backing to make it all happen...

Course I ended up leaving with a less than ideal degree but what I learned in the process of my 4 years was worth every bad grade...

From what I understand Hallam is not so well supported and various attempts to help get a Rag up and running there fell on their faces each time... They seemed like a nice enough bunch though :)

Rivalry?? Really. The tension between the two is about as reactive as toothpaste to water. Sheffield is a fantastic city with so much on offer - and most areas are safe and friendly places to be. Hailing from down south, i loved sheffield so much that i have taken out a mortgage here. FACT
love the location, the atmosphere, and the people. I have met many ppl at Hallam and Sheffield Uni's and both are great places. Although i study at Hallam, i got out to the Sheffield Union Bar often. The worst that has come of others knowing that i study at Hallam, results in a stuck out tongue. Its all good, unlike the med students at KCL and GKT in london but thats a different story!!

Speaking as a SHU student who hails from the South, I couln't agree more. Perhaps this a subject for a different thread, but I was wondering only the other day what it is about this city that gets under your skin and makes you love it. I had a perception of Sheffield based at least in part on "The Full Monty" before I ever came here, and there are parts of it that are as dirty and smelly as any other place I have ever been to. Yet right now I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.
And as a counterpoint to the above, try taking the tram from Midland Station into Sheffield itself. As you approach Castle Square on the bridge, and then go up to the cathedral, you realise that this is also one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Good on you southern fairies for welcoming our fair city into your hearts!

Well, I'm a first-year at Shef Uni, studying BA Modern Languages (German, Spanish, Dutch). I'm from the Isle of Man, but originally from Kendal (in Cumbria), so I'm by no means a southerner.

And yeah, I'm a big fan of the Uni. It seems to be very well organised, I haven't been unhappy with many aspects of it at all. My course is great (I'm interested only in being able to speak, write and translate the languages, not really about the literature or history side) and it fits my wants perfectly. Put it this way - I'd rather study at this Uni than any other in the country (that includes Oxbridge).

And I'm a big fan of the city. It's a hell of a lot cleaner than most cities, which is a big plus in my book. It's a cliché, I know, but I'm still impressed with the 'small-town' feel of the place - I've never lived in a place with more than about 45,000 residents before this. The only thing this city needs more of is musical instrument shops - there aren't nearly enough. But that's only a minor (hehe!) gripe...

Oh yeah, and the rivalry thing. Who cares?... I've yet to find someone that does. Put it this way - both sets of students are happy enough to be living here, they're not bothered. I've got nothing against Hallam - if I went there, it wouldn't mean that I had an automatic hate for all things Shef Uni...

I think they dislike us more than we dislike them, but that could just be my opinion. To be honest they are probably generally more intelligent than we are because it's harder to get onto the courses. However as someone pointed out, we do learn more practical skills and not just theory, which is more commendable IMO.

Oh, you do let the side down Sidla. I just pray my wife doesn't see this 'cos I got my degree at Hallam and she got hers at the Uni.

It's true though. I'm not saying the degrees are less credible, but I would never have got into Sheff Uni with 6 points at A-Level.

First-year at Sheffield, seems nice enough, as does the city. Though before I came here I never realised it would be so hilly. :D

im in my second year at sheffield uni, i think its great, really nice atmosphere, great facilities, good union. city is wonderful, apart from walking up all the hills!

im from north london (and not snobby or posh) and chose sheffield because im a planning student and the city seemed really interesting in terms of the urban environment.

my boyfriend is at sheffield hallam, the main campus is cool - i love the atrium, and the adsetts centre has more core books than my uni (although we have a wider range but less copies). psalter lane seems a bit out of the loop though and disorganised.

as for comparing the two - i think sheffield uni has a better academic reputation. hallam may be more vocationally focused though. You can get good experience at sheffield uni if you choose the right course with work experience opportunities. i think combined, both universities and the city itself provides all the experience and learning required by an employer - i hope anyway!

oh and i chose sheffield uni over hallam due to the specific modules in each course and the fact that when i went to hallam's open day, the person supposed to be showing us around forgot to turn up! i had hallam as my second choice though cos i really love sheffield :)
