Who else likes a bit of belgian/speciality beer?

If so where do you go for it?

So far the only places Ive found which sells belgian (etc.) beers are:

The Devonshire Cat (wide selection)
Wetherspoons (Leffe)
RSVP (Hoegaarden)

anywhere else?

Cavendish have Hoegaarden on draught.
I think Casa on Glossop Road has some (Hoegaarden or Leffe) on draught as well.

you can get timmermans, chimay etc at the Sheaf View, as well as Czech Budweiser Budvar on tap.

I think the Devonshire cat is the best for Belgian Beer, I was in there thursday and had some winter Konink Belgian ale.

I am travelling to the best place for it today, going to Belgium for a few days (family funeral) so I will be tasting a few over there.

Sheaf View us up the hill beside railway bridge at Heeley Bridge.
They also have Leffe on tap.

Another is the New Barrack Tavern on Penistone Road, they have Leffe, Chimay, Duval, Erdinger and many other Belgian/German beers.

Here's a big secret! New Barrack's Tavern by the Hillsborough Barracks (ie Morrisons) on the A61 North is fantastic for a good range of continental beers (including regular unusual draught) - but is the best "proper" pub in Sheffield (and that includes Fat Cat, Bath Tavern, Dog and Partridge etc.).

Try it! - Beware though - parking's not easy.

We stock Kronenbourg 1664 on tap which is Belgian.

I think you're stretching a point there Classic ;). Hardly comes into the same category that I think RPG was referring to :P

Always entertained by the way that any thread can be hijacked to advertise the CRB.. but isnt Kronenbourg a french beer?

Not quite in the same league as the real ale pubs mentioned - but the Hogshead pubs do a few belgian beers, and if you're near the train station or going to see a film - the showroom has Leffe & Hoegarden on draft.

Could have sworn it was Belgian. Oh well...cheers for the website link - I've entered their competition.....

Without wanting to be too rude to you Classic, the difference with the specialist pubs that sell good beer is an interest and knowledge of the product. Would it be fair to say that your specialist knowledge is music and that the beer is just a tool to get them in? I would suggest that not a single punter comes in because you sell Kronenburg 1664.

....and not wishing to hijack this thread and discuss quality of beer and music....indeed I agree that the majority of my customers come in for the entertainment on offer and to hear good music. However the beer is well looked after as well as the real ale that we stock. We have been praised by CAMRA and many others for the quality of our products. We set our standards high.

I don't know the ins and outs of every product in our range, nor could I quote ABVs. I've held my hands up and admitted I was wrong in thinking Kronenbourg was Belgian. Don't jump on me like a pack animal attacking a weaker member of prey. Talk Belgian beer and don't pull this thread down into the gutter. There's no need for it.

Slighty (ok totally) OT, it's great to see the fabulous Budvar on tap in more and more bars.

My fave Belgian tho'... Kasteel (11% ABV?). Only on in the Dev Cat.

In terms of the big name brand premium lagers everywhere sells, Kronenburg 1664 is a French brand, however the Kronenburg available in British pubs is brewed in the UK under licence to a slightly different standard.

Same goes for Stella Artois, which the label trumpets it's Belgian origins, yet all the Stella in this country is brewed in the UK under licence to, in my opinion, an inferior standard.

Then there's the trick of brands such as 'xxx Export' supposedly tasting like it truly would in the country of origin. Would have to go on 'field trip' to determine the truth in this.

Just got back from Belgium and I have sampled a few very nice beers, Kwak, Westermaal, Chimay, Duvel, Leffe, Konink, Deffedal (red fruit beer) plus a few others I can't remember.

Bought a Kwak box with four bottles a glass that's shaped like a science lab container and a wooden stand for the glass, quality!

Mmmmmmmmmmmm Beer!

ALL the beers? I went in last week and I could only see two beers from Belgium on sale, do you have to ask or is it I wasn't looking in the right place for them?

PS: RPG I tried to get a pic of the Kwak but I seem to be incapable of anything like that at the moment, will try again soon.

Look at the boards on the top for some, theres an erdinger pump on the left hand side of the bar along with a hoegaarden one I think.

They keep the bottled hoegaarden (grand cru) in the fridges at the back, and the rest of it is in the little "Shed" thing on the right hand side of the bar.

Oh well it looks like i'm on my own in the pub, what a shame!;) :P

Does the Devonshire cat sell the beers in bottles to take home? I know you can buy the Roger and out from the Frog and Parrot, or is there at least some sort of wearhouse that sells foreign beers?

RPG

I think if you ask them nicely they'll allow you to buy the bottles (most of the beer is served from bottles anyway)

I suggest the Brugs de blanche

I think that will have to be my bank holiday mission to get some foreign beer from the Devonshire cat.

There is a little corner shop off licence on Archer Road, Millhouses (near Sainsburys and Fitness First) called the Archer Road Beer Stop. They have shelves and shelves of bottled beers behind the counter not just from the UK but around the world. You can also buy hand pulled real ale by the pint in carry out containers.
