View Full Version : Advice Needed : Doctors
I don't have many fears in life but one of my biggest is Doctors. Tomorrow will be the first time I have been to see a Doctor for well over 8 years now.
I will be prodded and poked about the body, it's to be expected and its taken months of shall we say reasoning (I won't say nagging) to go.
I physically feel nervous/sick at even the thought of going to my appt, nevermind setting foot in the surgery.
This is genuine, anyone got any NICE suggestions on how to overcome my odd nervous disorder
:help: :help: :help:
Not much use probably.... just look at it this way....its maybe an hour of your time and no one is gonna hurt you....well not like a dentist anyway.
I'm the same about dentists, but I explained my (irrational) fear to my dentist when I first went to see him.
I also have a fear of needles, but have to have regular blood tests. I just tell them when I go, and then shut my eyes.
My advice, before any examination takes place, explain to the doctor how you feel. Most doctors are pretty understanding about this sort of thing.
I hate going to the doctors, and so do many (male) people I know.
Almost all the stress involved occurs before you see the doc...the anticipation, and the more clear headed thinking time you have, the more you get worked up. So you need to distract yourself:
Book in as early as possible in the day so you are still dazed from sleep.
Maybe write down all the things you want to ask the doc about the day before, then you can put it out of your mind.
Take some music to listen to on the way.
Take something to easy to read with you like a magazine.
Buy a treat for afterwards.
And remember things almost always turn out much better than you imagine.
Good luck with the quack!
sTaGeWaLkEr 26-02-2006, 20:15 After spending time in hospital having things shoved in me, round me, on me or up me - I've sort of stopped worrying about it all now. At the end of the day, if there isn't anything wrong, we don't need to see the medics. If there's something wrong, then we need to get it sorted...and we need to let them do their job.
Maybe your fear isn't helped by the fact that you rarely see a GP, but I can assure you, there really is nothing to concern yourself with. Honest :)
You'll feel better once it's over.
It's worth noting that in ancient China, Doctor's only got paid if you were well! The minute you became sick, you stopped paying them!
Good luck anyway :)
metalman 26-02-2006, 20:34 You could ask your doctor for something to alleviate your fear of going to the doctor... :)
Yellowrose 26-02-2006, 21:24 I have noticed that in recent years visits to the doctor are less likely to include a physical examination and more likely to involve talking. If its the physical exam that bothers you, you are less likely to get one these days I think. But do not forget, if you dont want to be prodded and poked, please say so. They may defer it, explain why its necessary, or simply not bother and ask you questions instead.
Also, if you have a choice, find out which partner in the practice is most sympathetic and go and see them.

If you have access to it - have half a valium - seriously, this will help !

I think given my situation and the way I have been since Oct/Nov time it is likely that it won't just be the one appointment so there is no way out of the prodding and poking.
But thanks for everyones kind comments, once again I knew I could rely on you guys :)
Yellowrose 26-02-2006, 21:42 All the best for tomorrow. It will get easier, if you have to make several visits. You never know, you might even get to like it. Visiting my current doc is a treat, he's gorgeous!

Don't worry you probably won't have many more appointments. Doctors officially have had a job revision over the last couple of years. Their usual quip now is 'you're stressed' (i.e. a hypochondriac), go away and stop wasting my time. A few years ago it was always 'do some exercise and eat a healthier diet' (even if you went because you thought you'd broken your leg), at least that did some good.
The other option is they'll tell you its psychosomatic and want you to see a psychiatrist if you keep persisting. If it's been going on for so long then at least you've bit the bullet, taken the bull by the horns and got an appointment to see your GP which is the first step to reassuring yourself there's nothing wrong. Seriously though I do hope the prodding, poking stuff which aint my idea of fun is nothing more serious.

I never get that, and in fact a 30minute appointment with the doctor recently talking through the problems with my asthma, and what causes it, when I get worse etc has resulted in treatment that has made my asthma better than it's been in 13 years. Maybe you've either got a crap doctor, or you are a hypocondriac :p

I've had a run of pretty rubbish doctors and one or two very good ones. I recently registered with a new one because i moved. I'm on medication long term which I was prescribed by a cardiologist when diagnosed with a heart condition. My new GP looked at my notes for two seconds, saw the word stress a few pages back (which is what another GP several years ago mistakenly diagnosed my heart condition as) and suggested I stop taking my medication, which is exactly what I was told not to do by the cardiologist. *sigh*.

Maybe I am but I have been doing a little research before I plugged up the courage to make an appointment and there are things Id like to ask the Doctor to put my mind at rest.
The Real D2J will hopefully be back sooner than later..

Noo don't worry Hook was referring to me. The point being, you are NOT a hypochondriac and if your GP (as quite a few now do) takes it upon himself to tell you so tomorrow don't listen! The tip earlier about writing things down before you go is a good one. You might feel silly but less so than when you come out kicking yourself because there was something important you wanted to ask.

Hey that wasn't aimed at you ^_^
I wish you could multi-quote on here >_<
Twiglet: my post was rather tongue in cheek! It is a shame that many people get put in that position, especially with GPs. I'm quite lucky because my GP is an Asthma Specialist, and it's really helped me over the last few months, there's also a great team of nurses at the UHS that help support the doctors very well. However the unfortune byproduct of a system that has far too doctors to the number of patients, and like any other career has crap ones and good ones often means it takes forever to find a good doctor! Back at home throughout my childhood I went from Doctor to Doctor and only ever found one really good one, who then went on maternity leave and never came back!
Well I noted everything down, trying not to wind myself up with worry.
10 hours till Crunch Time..
Cheers all :)

It's ok I knew it was tongue in cheek! Oh hang on, maybe not, maybe I am a hypochrondriac, what's one of those, I'd better google it, is it fatal? :D
Sorry D2J. Really, it's nothing to worry about. I know phobias are no small thing, I wish I could make myself go to the dentists. Just remember they can't do anything you don't want them to. They're usually very helpful and I'm sure will put your mind at rest, either by telling you there's nothing wrong or by telling you what is wrong and sorting out whatever it is you've been worrying about for months (which only makes you feel worse!). Even better, you'll probably find the experience far less scary than you imagined, and there you go, phobia cured!

My advice for you- dont be scared of them!
What is there to be scared of?
Lets put it this way, they are there to help you get better so by not going to see them and getting their help, how are you supposed to get better?
Its the same as dentists- they are there for a reason, to help us all out- not to cause us more pain.
If it takes a bit of probing and prodding to get you well- get it done mate.. dont be scared over a few minutes of discomfort.
Good luck- no fear mate :)
Hope it all goes ok for you D2J.
I've got a lovely doctor and we usually get along really well. Problem is, last time I went to see him I was in an awful mood (blame the hormones :hihi: ) and we ended up having a bit of a difference of opinion - not an argument as such, but I did come out with a few sarky comments. Anyway, he must have made some notes on the computer because I can't get a repeat prescription until i've seen him again (he must be a gluton for punishment)! But I feel quite embarassed now - so when I go I think I'll have to take a little peace offering - home made scones or something
youwhatref 27-02-2006, 05:59 Enjoy it D2J :D
Most Doctors are great and will listen to you and your concerns. Some even try to diagnose you as you walk into the room :D
Wasn't so bad.. Got through it.
Could have murdered a pint when I got outside :)
Back tomorrow but I know what to expect now.
Thanks peeps.
