I wonder if anyone can help me. For years I have been hearing about Lady Mable Hall in Ecclesfield school (I didnt go there).

Why was it called Lady mable hall?

I heard that there was a actress "Lady Mable" who was acting when someone opened the stage door an she fell to her death.

There used to be a Lady Mabel College so I would think the two are connected

The lady mable hall was named after Lady Mable Smith, who was a well respected governer at Ecclesfield school , when it was classed as a grammar school. She lived with her husband Colonal Smith, In Barnes Hall which is situated up bracken hill, Burncross.

HEY i currently go to that school, well before the school was a school it was a massive house for a couple , the wife was aldy mabel. and yes she died on stage, there are 2 versions to how she died, one is that she fell down trap door, 2nd is dat her husband switched the fake knife with a real one and she killed herself during a play, and everone just thought she was great actress, and thee reason for death was cheating on husband, thats all i know.

Anyway - the hall was dedicated to local dignatary Lady Mabel Smith (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lady_Mabel_Fitzwilliam) - Her picture is on the wall near the front of the hall. Google her name - there are lots of links.

Lady Mabel Florence Harriet Wentworth-Fitzwilliam (14 July 1870 – 26 September 1951) was an English socialist politician, later known as Lady Mabel Smith, after whom the hall is named.

Her father was William Wentworth Fitzwilliam, Viscount Milton, the eldest son of William Wentworth-FitzWilliam, 6th Earl FitzWilliam. Her father died before inheriting the Earldom and it passed to her brother, William Wentworth-FitzWilliam, 7th Earl FitzWilliam, whose lifestyle she criticized; "he had so much and everyone else had so little" .
She married Lt. Col. William Mackenzie Smith on 29 July 1899 and went to live in Barnes Hall near Grenoside, Sheffield. After her marriage she was known as Lady Mabel Smith.

She was a local politician in South Yorkshire, firstly as a West Riding County Councillor and later as a county Alderman and member of the Workers' Educational Authority[5].

Although a member of the aristocracy, she was whole heartledly committed to the Labour Party, and fought many of its causes. Her name was taboo at Wentworth Woodhouse. She and her husband are buried in Ecclesfield Churchyard opposite the West Door.

Yes they are. Total twaddle. The hall was dedicated to her memory after she died. She was great aunt to the 4th Earl of Wharncliffe (The Rocking Earl).

I remember Lady Mabel Hall my sister Margaret Bee sang there for the grammar school Elizabeth Gale another brilliant singer became very well known, and I think I rember Nigel W from Ecclesfield

you are all getting the story wrong about lady mabel. i go to ecclesfield school now and i will tell you the story.
well what happened was lady mabel was doing a play of romeo and Juliette
and when she came to performing you know at the end she stabs herself well it came to that part and someone had swapped the fake knife for a real one so that she would actually kill herself and the production was in the staff room at our school and the lady Mabel hall is just named after her to remember the death of someone who was loved at our school. If you go to the school grounds and go to lady Mabel hall then you will see a plate on the wall in remembrance off her so there you go theres the story !
