View Full Version : BT Phone Line
DapperDan 26-02-2006, 17:57 I need a phone line from its current position in the hallway into the lounge. I know BT charge for putting in new and additional phone lines. Do they charge for re-positioning lines? It's just that once I put in Sky, it needs to be connected to a phone line.
I know I could do it myself with an extension cable, but I rather not have wires strewn across the floor or along the skirting boards. I'm yet to put my carpets down, so I'm wondering if this would make it a little easier for them.
Cheers
whether BT do it or you use an extension, your going to have a white cable goint to where ever you want the socket. Use an extension acble & run it under the skirting board if theres a gap.
why use an extension cable it is just as easy putting in the cable yourself I did one from my living room to my study room it took me just 1 hour to put it in and fit it, the wires in the cable are colour coded and so they are in the socket you cant go wrong there is even a diagram in the socket to show you where the coloured wires go, make sure you have a proper wire stripper to do the job though as pliers are know good you will also need a good small screwdriver.
mr.blaze 27-02-2006, 14:18 Why don't you get a wireless phone? You could plug it into the original socket and be able to use it anywhere.
Wireless phone is not going to solve the sky box problem.
Do it yourself if you havent done the carpet yet. BT will only run a white wire from your exsisting box along the skirting boards, so do it yourself.
I once had an upstairs one put in, that went all the way upstairs!!!

the cable I put in for my phone and my internet goes from the living room to my study room which is 2 floors up as I use the attic bedroom for my study room, I had know trouble putting it in the cable I mean lol. if you need a hand with it then all you have got to do is just ask if you go to BT and ask them to do it you are talking mega money, I had a quote from them to do my upstairs bedroom cost £125 plus vat hence thats why I did myself if you buy the cable yourself and fit it, it will be a lot cheaper than BT fitting it. also you will need some cable clips if you are going to fit it to the top of the skirting board.
Alternatively run the cable outside the house.
Under the carpet would be my first choice, chasing the skirting boards but it's you that has to live there buddy :)
The Sky fitter should have done this cable for you anyway, you could complain and have it fitted for free if it is a new install.

I wouldn't recommend that if you can avoid it as you're unlikely to have cable that's black and made of material that protects the wiring inside properly.
Having recently networked a whole house as well as feed phone wires around my new one it's relatively easy to thread a cable around just inside the carpet nail strips using either a cable stapler (if you have access to one) or a glue gun to judiciously tack the cable in place.

That'd work too but just be careful... Oh and if you're putting in a new carpet you'll want to use some decorators caulk to seal up under the skirting boards too otherwise the edges of your carpet can become quite black from brick & stone dust coming through the gap. (the things I've learned recently).

Erm... well they will to a point but like BT they'll only run the cable along the skirting board so if you want to avoid it AND avoid the extra charge if you go past the Sky "standard installation" specification then you're better off putting it in yourself.
Best of luck...

If there is a cellar use that, go under the floor boards.
Taking the cable outside is a tidy method, an experienced fitter is recommended.
I thought networking now was predominantly wireless.

Oh definitely... Makes life a LOT simpler :)

If you want to be 100% sure the network is secure you're better off wired... wireless is definitely easier (once you've got to grips with the settings) but it'll never be as secure as a hard wired connection...
but hey, that's a whole other ball game...
