Where are the paintings? antisocial 26-02-2006, 11:08 Story I heard (but could be urban myth) was that a couple of owners ago, they wanted rid of the paintings but couldn't (no idea why - listed, historical interest). Anyway, having been told they couldn't remove them, they were mysteriously 'stolen' in the night. Have often wondered why they were there...dray horses I presume. Seems a shame they have gone were a bit of a Sheffield landmark. only_me 26-02-2006, 13:24 In the 70's the landlord owned these two horse's' and its my belief he raced them. I also seem to remember them being kept in the garage/stables to the left of the paintings. mikey 26-02-2006, 13:45 Not sure who those horses were, but I thought that there was some old law that said that any one could stable their horses there and it was used for strays etc etc. Titian 26-02-2006, 20:11 Not sure who those horses were, but I thought that there was some old law that said that any one could stable their horses there and it was used for strays etc etc. it's true. In fact a couple of years ago someone did leave a horse there for a while and the manager at the time had to feed it and look after it's general upkeep. Albatross 26-02-2006, 21:17 The two horses Maxim and Lorimer were dray horses that used to belong to Wards Brewery and they were stabled there, they were famous in Sheffield in their day. The Earl Of Arundel is or was ( I don't know if the act was repealed) a "pound house" that means it is required by Act of Parliament to take in stray animals at any time of day or night, not only horses but cats and dogs etc too. muddycoffee 26-02-2006, 21:33 You lucky people! I have pictures of this pub on one of my websites. The sign which explains the pubs role as a pound house (http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/pubs/earlsign.jpg) View of the whole building with the two pictures of the horses in view (http://www.rocknroll.f9.co.uk/pubs/earl.jpg) The pub is also famous for being the place where the Sheffield Wednesday team changed in part of the era when they played at their Olive Grove Ground, before they moved to Owlerton ( Later renamed Hillsborough ground ) rothschild 27-02-2006, 00:22 Do you remember the fire on Heeley city farm a few years ago? Didn't the horses from there get stabled at this pub? |
