Does anyone remember the incident in around 1993 when the breaks on a Sheffield Omnibus bus failed? I think it was in the local papers. I seem to remember the driver did well to avoid a nasty accident, and the company had a year taken off their operator's licence.

I can't remember this one, and it would be a surprise if the bus did not stop by it's safety brake. The "hand brake" on all buses is held in the on position by a large spring, when the driver sets his brake to off, comressed air pushes the brake off against the spring, while ever the air pressure remains constant, the brake will remain in the off position. Should there be a loss of air due to a fault or leak, the brake automatically comes on as air pressure is less than that needed to overide the spring. It's quite a simple system, but one that works very well.

I can vaguely remember something about a number 93 bus (or it may have been a number 4 then) nearly crashing as a result of some sort of mechanical failure (can't remember if it was the brakes). Apparently he was coming down Newman Road (which is just around the corner from me and managed to avoid people waiting at the bus stop by turning onto the grassy bank behind the stop, only just missing the stop and a corner shop at the side. I remember this was on the tv couldn't tell you when though, I thought that was a Mainline (as they were then) bus though. Any particular reason for wanting to know?

I don't remember that. However, I do remember a 27 bus leaving East Bank road, just after Daresbury Drive and sliding down the grassy embankment, ending up wedged under the walkway of the first block of Maisonettes. (Longest sentence in history :loopy: )

I think it was about 1973, does anyone else remember it?

I remember that happening. It was a number 94 bus operated by Sheffield Omnibus (blue & creme coloured buses). It happened in the Wincobank area of Sheffield.

Does anyone remember the SUT bus that ended up in Ponds Forge swimming pool?

The pool was under construction at the time. I think it had the roof on but no walls. The bus shot out of the interchange, straight across the road and through the constructon site hoardings, landing in the empty pool.

I've seen photos of this.

Heres one for anybody who remembers the old 'Roberts' type tram cars in Sheffield. They were the type of tram which toped and tailed the last tram procession in 1960 and the back one 510 is now preserved at Crich.

The story involves a friend of mine, who for as many years as anyone can remember has driven a little white van around the city in his work as an electrician. He was pulling away across a junction one day where he had right of way, when all of a sudden a tram hit his van full in the side, pushing it some way down the street.

The van was a write off, the tram faired a little better, details were exchanged and my friend waited to hear from the city tramways insurers.

He waited, and waited, and waited some more. But no compensation came.

The Transport Dept were stalling proceedings for some reason, which only became clear more than 10 years later, when by chance my friend met a woman who had been involved in a tram crash.

On further inquiry it turned out that the woman had indeed been on the tram which had hit Norman's van, and she knew exactly what had happened.

"Did he not see me across the tracks as he came towards me?" Norman asked.

"Probably not" the woman replied. "The driver was upstairs winding the destination at the time!"

no not this one,but my other half had the air brakes on his bus freeze up at the top of a very nasty hill, bust ran down accross main rd., & into the lounge downstairs & bedroom upstairs.we went over to england in 1987 & u cud still see where they have repaired the house.Would have been about 1965-66.

I remember that and a previous incident at the same spot in the mid sixties. I had close relatives on East Bank View and happened to be visiting on both occasions. The earlier one involved a bus with a rear platform and the later a bus with entrance at the front. In the earlier one the driver tried to turn the bus and it ended up facing backwards down the embankment. Photo and report in "The Star" at the time.

He he! Could be right. That's what my other half says:)

The entire block of maisonettes is long demolished so there's nothing to stop a bus there til it hits the houses quarter of a mile down the hill.
