Looking at the 1911 Census I find my Great Grandfather James Rogerson Elliott with his wife Sarah Jane and 3 of their children John HL, Stanley and Bernard at Shepherd Hill Sheffield.

The 1911 Census shows my grandfather Douglas Elliott not at home with his family but an inmate at Union Road, The Edge, Sheffield. Union Road is at Nether edge. So there may be a spelling mistake. Was it a workhouse, an institution, sanatorium, or what? He was 8 years of age being born in 1903.

Can anybody throw any light on what this place was and why my grandad may have been there. Inmate?

There is a thread about the Union Road Workhouse here (http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=720960). Looking at the 1911 census page, James, Sarah and family are evidently at No 16 Stephen Hill, off Manchester Road in the Crosspool district..:)

Stephen Hill is correct, sorry.

I've found material from various connections. The gatehouse still exists but the site has been redeveloped. It looks like I will have to pay a visit to the Sheffield Archives to dig any deeper and confirm its him and possibly why he was there. It appears that there was a TB sanatoria there. My understanding is that the TB sanatoria was established in 1906 and this ia a record of 1911. It will be my first visit to the Archive but we'll see what we can find.

Many thanks for the response. It was appreciated
