View Full Version : Looking for interesting places to shop
We have some people coming to stay from 'darn sarf' in a couple of months, and it seems we'll be going shopping
Now since Meadowhell isn't what it used to be, and I'm beggared if we're going to manchester *spits* to the trafford centre, I wondered if anybody could point us in the direction of somewhere interesting to shop?
We'll probably nip over to Donny to the Lakeside Outlet, but has anybody been to the Peakvillage, or Skopos Mills? Is there anywhere similar that would be worth a mooch?
White Rose Centre in Leeds isn't too bad, sure it's a bit Meadowhall-like but considerably smaller.
StarSparkle 24-02-2006, 15:27 I hate to say it really, but as far as I'm concerned, the most interesting shopping 'centre' close to Sheffield is the Victoria Quarter in Leeds. I'm sad to say it, but it's true - the shopping in Leeds is fabulous.

the_rudeboy 24-02-2006, 15:50 York has nice shops and the MacArthur Glen (sp?) place is on route.
I quite like York, but it's a bit of a busman's holiday for Mr Strix :(
What's in the Victoria Quarter, Star?
Victoria Quarter has Harvey Nicks. That takes a while to look round and go to one of the cafes. Other shops there are designer shoe shops, clothes, jewellery etc.. Worth a look especially at the roof in the Quarter ( not Harvey Nicks!).
cgksheff 24-02-2006, 17:41 Somebody has to say this ....
... are they not from closer to London than Sheffield? Where a greater variety and lower prices can be found?
Is there a hidden agenda that we should know about?
Maybe lots of 'used notes' to be spent as far north as possible?
:hihi:
cloudybay 24-02-2006, 18:08 York is very good but closer to home most little villages in the Peak District have interesting shops. Perhaps Castleton or Bakewell?

Oops, Samc has beaten me to this!
But yes - there's Harvey Nicks; and lots of lovely clothes shops not available in Sheffield, eg Jigsaw. And Bravissimo. Also several fantastic shoe shops eg Moda in Pelle, and the most wonderful jewellery shops - Links of London have an outlet in the Victoria Quarter.
And Space NK - absolute heaven for skin care and make-up junkies like myself! Molton Brown have a shop next to Space NK...... total spoiling!
And there are some great little shops/boutiques on the smaller 'link streets' in the Victoria Quarter, as well as on the main thoroughfares - there used to be a Vivienne Westwood shop on a side-street, but I'm not sure if it's still there.
Happy Shopping, wherever you end up!

Shopping? Why not take them out into the Peak District or somewhere cultural. Has the world gone mad????? Visiting friends to go shopping.:loopy: :gag:
I know a guy from Australia who came to Sheffield on a surfing holiday. Your friends seem to have a similar mindset. :|
I'd say York, too. It's as close as Leeds on the train and has less idiots! Plus it's a lot nicer looking.
Otherwise, Lincoln has lots of independent shops, Bakewell is nice for a morning (but get there early), Chesterfield for the superb market. Peak Village is a bit dull, as it doesn't have very many shops and they are all the same fleeces 'n' books about gardening types of places. Last time I went there I also saw the disturbing scene of around 20 young Mallards trying to mate a lone female duck who was running in front of cars in her attempt to get away and ended up having to chase them!

 Each to their own Max...
Whilst my collection of boots stretches to at least 3 pairs of hiking boots, I can't really see Rachel tottering round Kinder in her Stilletto boots and designer jeans ;)

Yes they are closer to London, but it's a bit 'got the t-shirt' when you live where they do ;)
Yellowrose 24-02-2006, 21:13 I used to like Nottingham town centre and it doesnt take much longer than half an hour if youre close to the M1.
pete_jim 25-02-2006, 08:48 What is wrong with Sheffield? Start at Hunters Bar and go along Sharrowvale Road - Buxton & Buxton(Gifts paticularly watches), Rio(Great value fashions), New Gift Shop(Solo?very classy), Ora Gallery(Classic gifts), Inside(gifts), Lillian Redfern(VV Classy fashion) plus 3 or 4 others I cant remember.
Next along Hickmott Road for a coffee in Nonnas where those Stilettos cn be seen in the window, and pick up some lovely bread from their bakery while you are at it (if you are part of the forum anti Nonna's movement then just walk past). Down Eccy Road into Lizziz which can hold it's own with any ladies clothes shop in the country, that's if you dare go in. On to Sister, Design Studio, Fat Face, Harrison. Don't miss the Gunshop they have great bags originally for shoooting but are the lastest must have alternative to all that Fendi rubbish.
Back up to the car to dump the bags and off to London Road for a fab lunch - Zeugema turkish cafe, Dim Sum, Noodle Bar...........................
Then teeter along to Vamp(lovely clothes for ladies), bunch of lowers from Orchis, mooching in the other shops along the way, calling in at that lovely cookshop across the road(OK I'm biased on that one), then back down to Bragazzi Italian Deli for a cup of tea and some cake.
Sorry but anyone who needs to go out of Sheffield to be entertained as opposed to wanting something specific lacks imagination IMO.
trudge72 25-02-2006, 09:43 i think york shambles its great i took 1 of my freinds there the other week loads of unusual shops an plenty to see as well.when it comes to most city centers now its all the same high street shops yawn yawn.its a shame we dont have somewhere like camden in london now thats a cool shoping place
Thanks for your suggestion Pete_jim.Ecclesall Rd is a favourite of ours, and we'll be having a mooch around the furniture shops and the fabric shop behind there too
PS - as for needing to go out of Sheffield for shopping, some of us don't get agrophobia from stepping beyond our town boundaries  and as I come from Liverpool, and have family dispersed about the country, it's inevitable that some of my receipts will have far flung towns stamped at the top :suspect:
pete_jim 25-02-2006, 12:40 I think I just get disappointed when people automatically think of going somewhere else to shop, particularly when people are visiting from outside Sheffield.
Not quite sure about your agrophobic comment - I'll be lunching at Simply Heathcotes in Manchester on Monday so I'll think about it then.
Lebeatch 25-02-2006, 16:31 If you're friend is going to shop in stilletoes then I'd probably avoid York anyway! And that part of Sheffield with all the cobbles.
Last time I went to Lakeside at Doncaster I was very disappointed. Doncaster centre is better (but not a patch on Leeds).
Have you been to the place at Castleford just off the M62? There's also the area where Ikea (Batley) is, there's lots of new shops open there now.
Redbrick Mill on Bradford Road, Batley is great for designer furniture - but you could just as easily have a wander around Ponsford!
We have friends coming up from 'darn sarf' over Easter too - when are yours coming up?
Have you thought about going up the East Coast? There's Hornsea Pottery and lots of the coastal villages have some neat shops too.
If you do decide to go to Leeds, you've also got Harrogate and Harewood House not too far away so you could make a good day of it.
Whatever you do, don't go to The Ridings in Wakefield.
I went about 6 years ago and thought it was pretty rubbish, today I've been there again to see if it's any better and i have just spent the most miserable 2 hours of my life there....I have vowed never to return.

Those are all excellent suggestions. Took a trip to Hornsea Pottery a few years ago, and had a lovely day out - very nice.
I recently visited Harrogate for the first time, and was very impressed with it. Lovely place, very classy - with lots and lots of lovely shops - and Betty's (Tearoom) of course! Well worth a visit

 It looks like our friends will have to make more than one trip up here then :hihi:
Have you thought about Morrisons ?

Er....Manchester...catch the train and have a good day out
Salts Mill up at Saltaire near Bradford - shops in the galleries and downstairs near the diner - lots of unusual shops amongst the terraced houses too

No Albert Dock in Sheffield though Strix. Am from out Liverpool way myself - some cracking shopping to be had up Lord Street and around the Cavern and the Docks.

Manchester? :suspect: Although..... we all have free rail passes so at least it wouldn't cost us anything to get there :D
Salts mill sounds interesting, and it's years since I was last in the Albert Dock
killerbabe 28-02-2006, 20:14 I'd recommend leeds for a good shop plenty of shops to choose from.
also the freeport in castleford is good for bargains! its right next to the Xcape, snow skiing thingy, loads of nice restaurants and a cinema too!
