I know Anne X and all the computer buffs know me by now,but here is another of my "simple" questions.

When I was with Outlook Express for my E Mails, when my son sent me a photo or video as an attchment,I just clicked on the paperclip, and the pict no.was in a drop down window, with a save button below that. When I clicked on the pict.no.it came straight up on my screen(as with any video) and I also clicked on save, and it saved it to My Documents. But because of trouble with O.E. inbox, i started using Yahoo Mail instead. This was more relyable regarding E Mails, but when my son send me a new video attachment,I could not access it instantly like before, and had to download it.Why should this be ?

i think its to do with outlook expresses preview mode?
which is highly dodgy

i ALWAYS save attachments to the computer to either virus scan em first, or the virus scanner will automatically pick up a virus when it saves to the computer
i do not recomend using outlook expreses preview mode at all, i have mine disabled........a virus can be included in an email and automatically runs when opened and so it runs as soon as you select the email and it opens in the preview mode

I may be wrong but, I think that the main difference is that Outlook is a tool that downloads your mail from the server before you read it. Thus when you click on the mail and read it, it is already on your computer.
Similarly with the attachment. It has already been downloaded and is available to be opened.

Yahoo Mail, on the other hand, is viewing the mail on your webmail server (not on your computer - yet). So when you click on the attachment to open or save it, it is only then downloaded to your machine.

Yes - you're correct OE/OL/Entourage/whatever variant, downloads the mail from the server, stores it on the machine and has it maked unread, yet Yahoo, and those webmail-types don't have the attachment on the computer until the 'Open' versus 'Save' dialog box appears.

I do feel as if I've pointlessly repeated your post!

Thank you all three of you.I have read all your answers very carefully.I do have Modem protection on,which comes up on the right of my computer, then goes down again before any programme.I also have a virus protection which I got when joining BT Pay as You Go.I can also run a virus scan myself, which I do about every fortnight. Also my son always tells me when he sends an attachment,as the paperclip sign(attachment)is on the bottom of his E Mail Am I doing right ?Seems that Yahoo Mail is safer than O.E. even if I have to download it.The window on Yahoo Mail says(Download attachment, and tick this box to close window when downloading is finished. Then save to Computer or Yahoo Briefcase.Im ashamed to say I havent downloaded anything yet,but if its safer I have to.If I save it to my computer, how do I know where to find it ,when the downloading is finished ?Please help.

When you save an attachment to your computer you should have a window appearing that will show you were the attachment is being saved to. This will most likely be in 'My Documents' or in one of the sub-sections, 'My Pictures', 'My Albums', 'My video's' for example.
You can choose where you want to save the attachment to by clicking on the little arrow at the end of the box where it says 'My Documents'When you've decided were you want to save it to look down at the bottom of the window you'll have to click on the save button.
The attachment will then be saved..Then you should open your 'My Documents' find the saved attachment and right click on it. In the drop down menu should be an option to scan it with your anti virus.
Always a good idea to get in to the habit of doing this
Hope this helps
