View Full Version : Cold that lasts for weeks
2wentypence 23-02-2006, 12:31 I picked up a cold in mid January, and cant seem to shake it off. Some days I feel almost better then the next its back- stuffy nose, neck pains, cough, mild chills- any combination. I know a few who seem to have had this persistent cold. Has anybody else had this, how long will I suffer and does anybody have any advice such as vitamins / supplements that might help fight it off. :(
Thanks
I've been like it for about 4 weeks, I find that I feel worse when the radiators are on so I've turned them down a bit.
I dont tend to take medication, just been trying to let it run its course but methinks it's time for vitamins or summat.
FairyNormal 23-02-2006, 12:40 I started with my cold in the first week of December and it's only in the last 2 weeks or so that I have stopped coughing! I felt rough, and I mean REALLY rough for the best part of 2 months with it. I was taking Echinacea and high strength vitamin c with Zinc.
This cold/flu/bug thing that's been going round this year has been really bad one.
Good luck!
Anything which lasts for more than a week or so really should be checked out by your GP.
Having said that, if it's a virus (most cold and flu-like symptoms are caused by virsuses), they can sometimes linger for a little while, particularly if you've been stressed or over-worked of late (stress can supress the immune system to a certain extent, so you're a little less able to fight of any infections).
There's not a lot that can be done if it's a virus; antibiotics don't work of course on viruses. You really can only treat the symptoms (paracetomol, perhaps in the form of hot lemons).
If you continue to feel off, you really should see your GP.

Yep I've had this bug, a right pain it's been.
Started with it in mid January and only just been right in the last week.
Thinking it's gone and then coming back sounds like it's classic symptom.
The other half has had it as well, same symptoms and most of our relatives.
Our 2 year old twin girls have been the worst, they had it for well over a month, leaving one one of them constipated and turning both of them into pint sized monsters.
With the bug now gone they hav'nt returned to normal either:mad:
To say visit you're doctor if it hasn't gone in a week is a bit over the top I feel.
Some of these viruses are damm persistent these day's.
Couple of years ago I went to the docs with a cough that wouldn't go away and he told me it would be the 100 day cough! I kid you not!
Anyway it sounds bang on what I and my family have just had so don't worry and good luck getting through it.

Fair enough, but the OP was worried enough to post about it on here, and the only place s/he's going to get definitive advice about what ails them is from their GP.
A persistant cough might be a symptom of a viral infection; then again it might not. Always best to gt it checked out if you're worried.
Yellowrose 23-02-2006, 14:36 We've all had it and it seems to be taking its time going away. We think its gone and it crops up again. My mum has been the same, with the same bug. We took the kids to the docs after a couple of weeks but he said it was just a virus. They are slowly getting better, but still have a few symptoms.
My energy levels are still very low and I keep getting a bit of earache.
matsalleh 23-02-2006, 14:45 See your doctor,it could be rhinitis.A simple prescription nasal spray worked for me.
merlin_7799 23-02-2006, 14:46 Sure I read somewhere that when you get a cold the germs/ bugs stay with you for about 12 weeks!! - thought that'd cheer you up!!
You are all very welcome!! :)
antisocial 23-02-2006, 19:47 Yep I have that lurgy too...must have been about 8 weeks now....
Forgotten what its like to hear properly and not be all snotty...luckily I missed out on the stomach flu bit.
The worst bit is my body temperature has got haywire, either feverish or like a block of ice, no matter what the temperature is.
I've had it for six weeks!!! My other half has taken to sleeping in the spare room as I am cough, cough coughing all night and keeping him awake! I hope it's gone by May, we're getting married then, call me old fashioned but I would like to sleep with him on my wedding night!
EDIT to say I mean in the same room, no filth intended of course!
detectorist 23-02-2006, 19:54 Me and my partner have had it since christmas... Its bloody awfull

When you go and see your GP they wont perscribe you anything so why bother, you've got to be nearly dying before they will do anything.

Because it's useful to know what you've got and if you can get anything to treat it which is more effective than the over-the-counter stuff. It might turn out that you've got a bit of a virus, but then again it might not. Better safe than sorry and all that.
I've had it since Xmas,it's driving me mad, theres a realy bad smell in my nose,it's yuk!!
Godzilla 23-02-2006, 20:17 I take a vitamin C and zinc supplement and also drink hot elderflower cordial laced with honey and lemon. Lane's Herbal Cold Remedy is effective for me too.
coolwill2k 23-02-2006, 20:39 Yes! i have this too.. It seems to go in phases! This week its the blocked up nose.. my cough isnt too bad!
Im living on orange juice to try and boost up my Vit C. :-)
Its not particularly intense, just prolonged and annoying!
Lets hope we all get better soon !
A cold or flu usually takes two weeks to go through its cycle for me - any longer than that and you ought to complain!
2wentypence 24-02-2006, 10:42 Thanks everyone! sounds like after a ruddy month of it im still in the early stages:gag: This week I is snotty- I will keep you all updated of my theme for next week.
cosywolf 24-02-2006, 11:49 Well, at least we're not alone. Bugs have been going around the Cosywolf/Farmman household since before Christmas. I blamed it on the Cosycub starting nursery and bringing bug after bug home...I do think that once you've been pulled down with one you're more susceptible to the rest. We've done snotty cold, coughing cold, flu, stomach bug (twice), earaches, and recently a nice fainting sick headache thing.
Poor cosycub has lived with a cold for more than two thirds of his little life, and probably has no idea what it feels like to feel fine. Add teething and I feel sooo sorry for him!
As for seeing the GP, I don't feel unwell enough to go expose myself to even more germs in the waiting room and take up my GP's time. We have phoned NHS Direct with the tummy bug, which is one way of dealing with such things. And taken HV advice on not bothering the GP with cosycub's cough and cold. Otherwise, the GP will sigh and say they've seen lots of 'it' this year, and you should rest and look after yourself, and send you home.
I find echinacea has worked in the past - just can't afford it at the mo. And eat your fruit and veg! And fizzy vit c which I couldn't say I find really work, but it makes you feel like you're doing something, lol.
BUt of course you should go to your GP anyway if you feel really really off.
So glad i have seen this thread, makes me realise its not me been silly, ive felt really rough for the best part of 4-5 weeks and was sure i was terminally ill or something (typical over reactive man i know :hihi: ), no matter what i took or how much i thought i was over it it just keeps coming back, stiff neck chesty cough , runny nose (which resulted in a nose bleed today from being over blown!) and the usual other run down type of feeling, even my friends thought i was putting it on. just glad to know im not alone:| ,
Moonman - off to the pub after having his sanity and self belief restored!
