View Full Version : Blackadder IS better than Fools & Horses

If anyone watched Britains best sitcom last week you'll have seen Only fools and horses beat blackadder to the number one favourite.

Personally i think Blackadder is the greatest ever comedy EVER! Only fools & horses is good but how many times can you repeat the same storyline of two hard-up brothers trying to make ends meet!?

Blackadder is funny, witty and above all different everytime. I just hope that they dont make another series, after seeing the millenium blackadder spoil so much hard work.

You are quite right - but I predicted the outcome, based on the fact that OF&H has a more populist appeal. Blackadder requires the viewer to have a bit of education, know a little about the featured periods of history and the historical figures being caricatured and understand the wordplay.

Did they announce the numbers of votes for each or just who won?

I cant remember them mentioning how many votes were in it, maybe someone can tell us.

I also think the bloke who was championing Blackadder wasn't the best choice. He seemed abit dull and didn't know much about the show to say he was meant to be willing people on to vote!!

Sorry but I have to disagree on this one ... Only Fools is THE best ... It's one of my fav programmes ever (especially the one where they go to Holland for the Diamonds) ... Del and Roddy Rule haha x

I doubt there's many people that would dispute that Fawlty Towers is worse than Blackadder though. Fawlty Towers is clearly far superiour.

And I'm a Dibley fan, but the 3rd best British sitcom?? You're having a laugh.

I find it ironic that after all the comments about chavs, scallies and scum on the forum so many people voted for a comedy based on just those sort of characters.:loopy:

I have to agree with Lestat, Blackadder is the best sitcom out of all those to reach the top 10, imho. Also imho the only reason it didn't reach number one is what robh said about needing to have a basic understanding of English history to appreciate most of the humour.

Never was able to get into Blackadder. Never found anything involving Ben Elton or Rowen Atkinson funny.

Fawlty Towers should have won. Fools and horses is good but not the best ever.

i love Blackadder, but i agree with Sidla. Fawlty Towers is the best ever and I actually voted for it. there was something in one of the papers about people having problems with the phone voting system. in trying to vote for number 10 on the list, the vote was accepted after the initial '1' and so number one on the list got many votes at the expense of number 10. don't know which programmes were which and don't know how accurate the story is as there always seems to be cries of vote rigging at all these tele polls.

Agreed, I've said many a time that John Cleese is the absolute GOD of old school British slapstick comedy.

You said it Max, having a basic understanding of British history helps, with so many classic one liners involving everything from Prince George, The scarlett pimpernel, Queen Elizabeth and The trenches of the war.

Compare this to the consistency of:
'Rodney you plonker' or 'you stupid boy' or even 'I dont believe it'.

The same old lines, the same old people, the same old gags dressed in a different outfit every week. You got to admit now Blackadder is the best.

While I agree that Blackadder is easily the best, cleverest and sexiest comedy... the best single line has to be "Don't tell him Pike!" in Dad's Army.... Hmmm I can feel a new thread coming on.

LOL! ..What about when Blackadder's in bed with the nurse and asking her about her life I cant remember it properly but i remember it made me ache with laughter the first time i saw it:

'do you have anyone special, somewhere quiet in the country, away from all this madness, a priest or a vicar maybe, someone nice, gentle....Hung like a baboon'

You probably wont like The Thin Blue Line then either, thats written by Ben Elton, starring Rowan Atkinson. Not the best comedy ever, but under-rated IMO.

How could you overlook the subtle genius of Are You Being Served:

If I may paraphrase the immortal Mrs Slocombe:

"I'm sorry I'm late Captain Peacock. There was a fire in the block of flats where I live and four burly firemen were crawling along the ledge outside my window trying to grab hold of my pussy!"

It's pure gold, isn't it!

i find it annoying that we didnt actually get to choose the top 10 we were just given 10 sitcoms, some of which id never seem cos they were so old, most of them were BBC (coincidence) Some just werent even that funny, they just had loads of series made cos they were feel good family programmes that made you smile, but not laugh out loud.

Fawlty Towers should have won in my opinion though as it didnt go on past its sell by date. There were only 12 episodes, unlike OFAH, which went on and on, they kept saying its the last one ever and theyd squeeze another one it. It went too far when del boy became a millionaire.

Meh, stuff like that's always fixed anyway, even if the public could vote for what 10 sitcoms were in it's still almost a given that OFAH would've won.

Maybe some of the recent/current shows but you can only tell if they'll stand the test of time when they have.

I wonder why "My Family" wasn't in the list.

It's done something like 6 series now, and apart from the odd bit of over acting (or is that characterisation - see Vicar of Dibley / FawltyTowers / Dad's Army / OFAH / Blackadder / etc) it's always funny and original.

Maybe 'cos it's ITV eh?

"I don't mean to be pedantic or anything, but the colour of gold...is gold....that's why it's called gold...What you have discovered...if it has a name, is some....green"

You have to watch it to appreciate. Classic Blackadder.

I only really like the early Fools And Horses episodes...from the eighties upto the very early ninties; i think it went downhill from then on.

Agreed, but even as good as the early O.F.A.H stuff was Blackadder was pretty damn supreme, Especially Blackadder goes forth which in my mind was the best series with Series1 coming a close second, then series 2 then series 3

If only fools was not shown so often I think you would appreciate it more certainly better than blackadder which just has some very funny bits

I don't think you can compare Blackadder to Only Fools and Horses. It should have been 'Best Altenative Comedy' - Monty Python's Flying Circus, the IT Crowd, Inbetweeners, etc. I think there should be different 'niches' of comedy and not lump everything together in 'Sitcom' land - whilst on Sitcom, consider, Terry and I (Terry Scott and Hugh Lloyd), Steptoe and Son, Eric Sykes and Hattie Jacques, 'Til Death us do Part, The Good Life, and Dad's Army - the last one appeals to all generations. And nearer to home the original Last of the Summer Wine. Oh nearly forgot, one of my favourites as a teenager was 'The Dustbinmen' starring Eric Pringle as 'Egg and Chips'. For a series, the dustbinmen that had Eric Woodward was also a great series. And lets also not forget Auf Wiedesehn Pet!, Are you being served?, It Ain't half hot mum!
The original (and still the best) The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin and subsequent series. Porridge!
'Interactive' comedy - Miranda, The Peep show.
