View Full Version : Parson Cross
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 10:12 I am pretty new to the forum so I don't know if this subject has been discussed before, but thought I would air my (minor) grievance to all and sundry.
Why oh why oh why do some people INSIST on calling Parson Cross Parsons Cross? It really bugs me and others that I know. All the signs and maps show it clearly to be Parson Cross so why add the extra 's'??
All suggestions welcome!!!
sheffieldism 23-02-2006, 10:19 its just the way it is said, some people use an S some dont, who gives a ****
I sometimes say Parsons Cross....dont know why...never really given it a thought
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 10:33 As I said, it is a minor grievance but I would love to hear everyone call it by its right name, after all we don't call Sheffield Rotherham do we?

no because they are nothing alike you fool, but is easy for peopl to call parson "parsons" when they aint that familiar of that area.
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 11:00 Well there is no need for name calling. As a matter of fact many of the people who mispronounce parson cross actually live in parson cross, how much more familiar can a person be with an area?

What put you in such a bad mood.
I live in Parson Cross and sometimes refer to it as Parsons on it's own and even when I'm talking quickly can actually say Parsons Cross.
sheffieldism 23-02-2006, 11:34 What put you in such a bad mood.
:) im not sure really, i dont think im in a bad mood, just voicing my opinion........aggressively, well not really - i just dont see why it matters, obviously its wrong but so what.
RazorSHarp 23-02-2006, 11:42 I refer to it just as 'Cross' or 'The Cross' as I never know wether it is Parson or Parson's as in a Cross belonging to the Parson, which is the likely heritage of the name and if so Parsons Cross would be correct and your Parson Cross would be wrong.
Any place name historians out there?
Guderian 23-02-2006, 11:44 I refer to it as Sh*thole.........

Hi, you think you have it bad? thats nothing, I'm from Grenoside, just up the road yet enter that into a perfectly innocent Word document and it's changed to genocide... i mean, what is the world coming to?!? :loopy: :loopy: :hihi: :hihi:
A minor thing that has always annoyed me is that alot of people say that Yewlands on Creswick Lane is in Parson Cross, it's not, it's in Grenoside... You'd think The Star could find that out for themselves :help:
fridgeman 23-02-2006, 12:07 i'm the same when i hear folk say "st john's ambulance" it's john not john's
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 12:11 I quite agree fridgeman, its not rocket science is it. If there is no s there why say it? Are people not reading things properly? When I did a St John first aid course the instructors stressed the point that it was St John and not St John's.
cgksheff 23-02-2006, 12:23 ...... its not rocket science is it. If there is know s there why say it? Are people not reading things properly? ...
Luvvin it!:hihi:
sheffieldism 23-02-2006, 12:27 dont you just hate it when people say know instead of no or no instead of know or..............what is this world coming to. haha
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 12:36 Just trying to prove I am human guys and not some anal retentive perfectionist. Note to self-don't post on the forum when trying to do the day job.....
sheffieldism 23-02-2006, 12:40 haha was just having a bubble bath mate, nothing personal
msweatherwax 23-02-2006, 12:47 And I thought I was bad posting from work, at least I am dressed........
BTW yeah I get it really, just in case you feel the need to explain....
cgksheff 23-02-2006, 12:51 Did the council name the "The Winter Garden", to perpetuate this problem, then?
This has never bothered me..................then again

would it enhance your life if we all dropped the s ?
i admit to posting some crap on here at one time or another but to discuss the silence of the s in a part of town ,is really scraping the bottom of the old barrel its not you,its just the s , honest, ive never liked them, really.!:hihi: my apologies, forgot to say welcome to the forum, have fun and dont take things to seriously on here
mistyraven 23-02-2006, 22:10 I just say on the cross. :o
I live in Parson Cross and sometimes refer to it as Parsons on it's own and even when I'm talking quickly can actually say Parsons Cross.
And i like to say... i live on the cross....
I guess we all have our own way of saying things especially about where we live and this topic of Parson Cross has come up numerous times, I shouldn't let it bother you too much, I don't let it.
mrsb1985 21-03-2006, 17:45 parson cross parson cross parson cross see i can say it right watch i'll do it again parson cross i used to live ther and it used to annoy me but if you listen to the people who live there most of them say parsons cross i think its because it rolls of the tongue easier. did you knoe that all the roads in parson cross were actually named after vicars, i'm so full of useless b******s recently. anyway i know you'll all sleep better tonight knowing that so my work here is done!!ol!! bye for now victoria:hihi:
just petty realy in my oppinion
just petty realy in my oppinion
agreed who cares what we call it aslong as people know what ur on about :hihi: :loopy:
sambradh 25-03-2006, 18:26 The BIG cross debate!!!
There used to be 2 sides to Parson(s) cross many years ago they were known as Parson Cross, near lynsey way and New Parsons Cross closer to Ecclesfield over time its all rolled into 1 and now its just good old CROSS!!
Are thy off cross? I am weer tha frum then?
Maybe there are just a lot of cross people in Parson (no S) Cross. Unless the parson himself is also cross
Sheff Chick 26-03-2006, 18:52 no because they are nothing alike you fool, but is easy for peopl to call parson "parsons" when they aint that familiar of that area.
A lot of people get confused from when the area was split into new and old. They then referred to it as new Parson's Cross and then forgot the new and kept the S.
I live in PX and there is a lot more stigma actually to the area as a whole to be getting annoyed at people who merely add the S. Seems a bit petty really! No offence
Sheff Chick 26-03-2006, 18:58 A minor thing that has always annoyed me is that alot of people say that Yewlands on Creswick Lane is in Parson Cross, it's not, it's in Grenoside... You'd think The Star could find that out for themselves :help:
You are not actually entirely correct on this fact. The bottom part of the school does actually fall under Parson Cross, as does Mansell School, as does half of Yew Lane.
I lived on there with my rents and my next door neighbours postcode flagged up as Ecclesfield whereas ours came under Parson Cross. :o
dynamicdebz 26-03-2006, 19:56 did you knoe that all the roads in parson cross were actually named after vicars,
I think you'll find most of the roads were named after writers.
Wordsworth, Deerlands, Brailsford, Buchannan, Monteney, Butchill, to name a few. :P
bigtom1981 27-03-2006, 14:11 I live on parsons cross and sometimes call it parson cross dont no why though :D
pete_fcs 27-03-2006, 17:22 Hope no-one minds me butting in, but these pictures are relevant: they are of parson cross, and i didn't put "parsonSSS" on the titles!:
http://photobucket.com/albums/b171/sheffieldarchives/parson%20cross/
thes_cat_man 15-04-2006, 15:56 Who really cares if its parsons or parson everyone knows what you mean so why cry about it....As for Yewlands being in Grenoside or not who really cares about that (apart from you!) but just to keep you happy you'll find its postcode is S35 Not 5
WhatsGood 15-04-2006, 16:26 eh,who cares...i sometimes call it the cross. But you wouldnt find that on any maps or whatever...loads and loads of people call ecclesfield "ecco"...but you wouldnt find that on any map..doesnt really matter what people say...
And some people even complain from the rooftops if you put an H in when you're writing about Ecclesall, if you put Eccleshall it's like you've committed a mortal sin to some people.
climaxchick 15-04-2006, 16:58 Many people shorten it to 'Parsons'. Maybe thats why? I can't actually believe this bugs you that much..... don't you have anything better to do than worry about something so petty?
climaxchick 15-04-2006, 16:59 I really could speak my mind on this but i think i've said enough.
fredsredhat 16-04-2006, 10:34 I used to live in Parson(s) cross, my mother still does and I've always said Parsons. Dunno why it just rolls off the tongue easier. Also when i post anything to her i write Parsons Cross in the address, everything seems to have got to her so i dont think the post ofice has a great issue with it.
I work in Parson(S) Cross, and i always add the S for some unknown reason,
If you add the s or not people always know where you mean :loopy:
However the correct name is PARSON CROSS as we all know!!!!
I really don't think it matters one way or the other.
I live on the outskirts and it doesn't bother me.
I live right next to it and never knew it didn't have an S on the end...
Anyone know where PARSONSSSSS Cross is? :suspect:
briggy1967 17-04-2006, 20:26 ffs................WHAT DOES IT MATTER,jesus christ some people need to get out more
ffs................WHAT DOES IT MATTER,jesus christ some people need to get out more
