I had a permit to fish those ponds in the early 80's, I remember the baillifs, a chap called Ken Thackeray (nice bloke) and an obnoxious gobby sod called Ken Croft and his nasty little dog "Butch" both hailed from Lowedges. I spent two summers up to my chest in water, repairing the leaks in both dam walls. I preferred the larger top pond with the water iris beds. I never drew a blank there and often filled my keepnet with common carp, Mirror carp and tench plus the obligatory skimmer roach and rudd. The bottom pond held some huge tench for such a small pond. Ken Thackeray pulled a 7lb 9oz monster out one evening whilst I was fishing opposite him. We did start work on the third pond which went up to the monks well in the woods. After 2 years of digging and then lining it and re filling the dam wall, we managed to hold about 6ft of water in it and managed to scrounge some trout from a breeder to stock it with. Shortly after we had done all the hard work the owner decided that they were going to sell it and we all lost our permits. When the IT company purchased the old hall to renovate into their head office the ponds were left to wrack and ruin. I believe that both the bottom ponds were netted and the fish transferred to another home. There are still a few fish in the ponds but they have silted up and I wouldn't recommend making a trip there as you may well be dissapointed. |
