View Full Version : Football - club or country?

After a heated discussion last night with my friends, I was curious, do you proiritise your club or your country?

Personally, i prioritise my club. I still support england when playing in a tournament. In the case of an international friendly though, i'd prefer it if my club players were not risked in the squad. nothing annoys me more than players being played in a friendly, then getting injured.

Anyway, whats your view?

I think those friendlies are a waste of time. I hear that a new ruling is going to be intorduced which means less substitutes allowed. Bringing on 11 subs is a joke. International caps used to mean something back in the day, now their ten a penny.

Agreed. Another thing about friendlies, is that the team only gets one training session together i think, which is not really a true reflection of how they will play in the championships when they have been training for weeks together.

Definitely Club. Theres nothing in it unless it's a major competition like the World Cup or Euro..

Seeing as so many Liverpool players play for England it's pretty dangerous too.

Seeing as how the players that make up the national side are drawn from club level and as that's where they build up the skills and hone the talent, it has to be club.

The professional football club is the foundation of the sport across the world, whereas international competition is a matter of pride between nations. The latter is made possible by the former.

Have you actually cast your vote?

The poll says that only three have been cast and all for club.

Honestly, all this time spent mulling over politics and international terrorism has some folks distracted from the real issues at hand.

If my club played England in a football match, apart from the complications of my captain maybe wanting to be the captain in both teams (Southgate), I would support my club first and foremost. But I wouldnt be as determined as I would about a regular club match.

It would be one of those matches where you arent so bothered which side wins - like Arsenal v Man Utd this weekend (sorry Lou)

It comes to something when England can't beat the likes of Sweden at football.

It's some 36 years since we beat them. Why can't we beat them?

They are a small country in footballing terms with less professional clubs.

also by me. i'm a girlie (perhaps a teenie-weenie bit too old now to be classed as a girlie) and a football fanatic, even though supporting Exeter City and football fanatic are slightly contradictory, but its club for me every time. no Exeter players in the England side, so why should i care?

Although I've supported Wednesday all my life, I'd still go with England cos (call me an idealist) I still believe that England's a damn good place to live and we should be more like America and show a bit of patriotism every now and then instead of being so bloomin cynical all the time!

Of course the problem is that when we do go and show off our patriotism, we get beat by someone like sweden!

Let's face it, England (and the rest of the UK) are a crap footballing nation.

We've won nowt since 1966 (at home), and our premiership wouldn't exist without a glut of foreign talent. Anybody know how many English players are (good enough to be wanted) in foreign club teams?

This isn't unpatriotic on my part, its just facts.

We're a brilliant country, but we're basically crap at all sports. But what the heck, at least we entertain the world.

how true. everytime the World Cup comes round, or a game against Germany, they trundle out the old 1966 archives. that was almost 40 years ago, for God's sake! sadly, the media are mostly to bame for this sort of ridiculous euphoria.
