I came across one for the first time the other night. Have to say I was quite impressed.

Good memory, and the sound was great for such a small thing....

You can get a Zen Touch 20Gb for around £140-£150 now as they've been replaced by the 20Gb Zen Sleek. The Zen Touch has 24 hour playback - I use mine a lot and only charge it once a week or less and it is extremely easy to use, plus you can make playlists 'on the go' which is useful, and the sound is excellent - way better than the i-Pod I had! It's a top buy. I think the Zen Sleek may have a radio and it has voice recording (but no line-in recording - an Archos GMini 220 (I think that's the model?) is best for that).

If I was upgrading now I'd go for one of the PMPs, but I'll hang on as long as my player does. For small devices for sports and so on, I'd go for anything cheap and cheerful as it's going to get bashed about so there's no point splashing the cash, and for mid-size, one of those new Zen Micro Photos.

I always think it's best to weigh up the features you want - e.g. battery life, radio, recording, playlists, more options for downloading, fashion etc. and then choose based on those.

I have an H10.

It's a superb piece of kit!!!

The big 3 are the H10, iPod and the Zen.

The H10 wins hands down for features and sound quality.

iRiver are the Ferrari of MP3 players and one of the most important features, IMO, is the detachable battery which means if the battery dies you simply order another (£20) without having to bin the player.

I like the other features too such as colour screen, FM3 radio, voice recorder etc etc. It is also very useful for using as an external drive to your pc to back up files etc.

I have heard so many bad reports about iPod and the Zen is meant to be flimsy.

... so GO GET ONE NOW!!

P.S. iRiver issue regular firmware updates for the player and all the info you need can be found at http://www.misticriver.net/

P.P.S. If you do decide to purchase, drop me a line and i'll tell you which firmware to download to remove the european volume cap.

My Zen isn't flimsy. I had a heart stopping moment when I dropped it on the floor and it bounced, but it was OK! Having said that, I do look after it, and don't just stuff it in a pocket, but lay it reverently down on a good surface before using it. ;)

The only drawback for me is that the battery is not easily replaceable like it is with iRiver, but then there isn't a single player which offers everything I'd want. :(

Glad you're happy with it anyway.

I researched various MP3 players for over a year before settling for one with all the features i needed.

I almost decided on the Zen but the H10's features swung it for me.

Couple of good sites to look at the various players .....

http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk - where i bought mine - excellent service!!

http://www.mp3players.co.uk - originally ordered mine from here, but cancelled order just after purchase (can't remember reason?) - but they still charged me and it took weeks for my to get my money back!

Both good sites with reviews.

Good luck.

I've had the iRiver 320 for nearly a year now and am very happy with it.

It doesn't need special software on the computer to transfer music, can be used as an external hard disk, you can plug a camera into it and transfer pictures without needing a computer, it has a leather case with a belt clip, can show photos, text files, movies as well as playing and recording mp3s. It's a bit bigger than the ipod though.

Just use highlight all the folders / files in My Music on your PC, and drag them onto the iRiver My Music folder and drop them in.

Job done!

No faffing with iSpoons or MS Media Player or that weird Sony software.

Ditto - I have this too, it also plays videos with a quick firmware download from the iriver site.
I wouldnt have any other player, I think it has the best quality, and none of your hard earned money is paying for a name - it all goes on quality.

Thinking of getting an mp3, don't know whether to go for the iriver H10 or the 20GB zen sleek...
Can you not remove the battery on a zen sleek? Or is it just more difficult?
With a zen sleek does it organise the ipod by song artist or album artist, what about the iriver?
I have also heard that the iriver's touchpad is too sensitive...
Is there anywhere in sheffield I can have a look at either of these, been to curry's but they only seem to stock ipod/phillips and sony...
Also what kind of USB interface do they each have, i.e. are they specialised (eg ipod) or standard?
Can I use wmp to transfer my music across?

Wow, lots of questions...
Thanks
Nick

Can't answer Zen related questions.

Yes the iRiver organises by artist, album, playlist, title etc etc.

I find the touchpad to be perfect - no problems at all. Just how it should be.

The H10's USB cable is proprietory for the machine i.e. it doubles up as a charger, however you can disconnect the transformer part if you so wish. You cannot use an ordinary USB cable though.

I've had my H10 6 months now and it's been a real joy to use. The sound is fantastic and has every feature you'll ever need.

You can pick a 6GB one up for a good price now.

If you do buy, make sure you install the firmware with the volume cap removed. Very easy to do - drop me a line if you need a link.

Hi, thanks for that unisol, think I'm pretty much decided on an iriver, unless anyone wants to champion their zen sleek...
been looking at prices this morning, amazon can do a 20GB for 139.99, inc delivery, but it may take a couple of weeks to arrive, but I'm in no hurry...
Anyone know of a better price anywhere?
Thanks
Nick

Pretty dire, might go with amazon... thanks though.

What's the difference between a H340 and an H10, is the H10 just a newer model??

iRivers are nice, but iAudios are better if you can afford the extra cash, I have an M3, and its the best mp3 player i've owned, slim, sleek, and has a cool (cable) remote. And the sound quality is better than anything else I've used

Personally, I don't think iAudios provide a better sound quality than iRivers - but that's just my opinion! :)

They are pretty much like for like, they use the same audio chips.
