View Full Version : Vicars
slimsid2000 01-04-2004, 15:35 This is a starange question but what do vicars do all week. I know they give a sermon on Sundays but how do they spend the other 6 days. I suppose they do the odd funeral or wedding, and have to write their sermon but what else?
Classic Rock 01-04-2004, 15:58 I googled it but nothing really came up. It seems that most jobs in the parish report to the vicar. He's probably the advisor and the guy who pays the bills. He'll steer committees, help youth workers, liaise with community groups and so on.....

according to Emmerdale, they spend most of that time in the pub.
And sticking their noses in other peoples business.
also eating lots of chocolate, especially in the parish of Dibley.
They do quite a lot I think. Although I can't speak for every vicar, but the vicars in my local parish do loads of community support stuff, such as visiting nursing homes, visit schools, give midweek services (we have Wednesday communion where I live). They also support local homeless refuges. Some are even trained to do exorcisms.
Just as an example, when my brother was arrested a couple of years ago, our vicar was the first person he turned to for support.
Mosherchik 01-04-2004, 19:49 Vicar I know spends most of his time tinkering in the garage trying to renovate a clapped out old VW beetle...
Cant get quicker than a Quick Fit Vicar :D
My brother's a Vicar. He works with a trust, caring for adults with Downs syndrome and other disorders
Father Ted's father (?) seems to have a fun life! DRINK!!
and the Vic of Dib has a parish meeting!
then patronises Alice for the rest of the week - sounds fun

Ever hear about the case of the kid in the US who tried to get his school to accept the anti-gay hate rallies that he attended with his parents as "extra credit" towards his grades?
The school were horrified and refused to allow him to claim the extra credit. But as his grandfather was a minister and a member of the local religious and political far right, he threatened to campaign to have the school's funding cut. So the school caved in and allowed the kid to claim the credit from his anti-gay activities so long as everyone didn't mention what he actually did on the marches.
So it seems that in the US they stick their noses into secular matters and promote homophobia to the young.

You hear about some of these things going on with vicars, probably in The News of the World etc. I'm never sure just how widespread such things are. I mean all those old jokes about vicars touching up choir boys etc. I suppose there must be some basis of truth in it.
I think they've started vetting priests for churches that have choirs in a similar way to the way they vet teachers.
