I posted this on general chat but it's probably better here.

Does anyone attend Pilates classes and do they find them beneficial. I was talking to a physio today who said that they might help with my constant back/neck/shoulder problems.
Are there any classes in S10 area ?
Any comments are welcome.

Heey,

I also have problems with my back and have been told pilates would be good. My housemate last year at Uni absolutely raved about it! My Auntie also does it and reckons it's top banana!

My housemate used to go to a class at Sheffield University's Sports Hall (S10 Health http://www.shef.ac.uk/s10/). It's on Northumberland Road and is open to the general public too. I can't remember much, but I know she used to go at 12:30 for a class on Saturday.

If you go let me know what you think, I may have to try it!

It's very good for improving your core stability and making you aware of posture etc....

I do a class at the White house physio clinic - it's just off sandygate and about 5 mins from crosspool.

Once you've learnt the basics it's really easy (well not easy) to do at home as you don't really need anything except a little space.

Might try the saturday class as well tho'

I was at the White House yesterday for my "thumping" and asked the receptionist about pilates classes. She siad that they only do classes in work hours during the week, which counts me out. She didn't mention Saturday classes.
Do you do the single or group sessions. Is it all female or mixed etc. Don't want to be the only male in a group of ladies :)
Thanks

I've been once and found it realy hard work - it focused on the tummy area, hence the posts about posture. I woke up wi th cramp the next day... I'll stick to yoga I reckon!

I did the pillates class at S10 for a while and found it very good for my back (I have the programmers problem of god-awfull posture from slouching over my desk!) and general core strength. If you try it you will almost certainly be in a very small male minority - quite possible a minority of one - but whats the problem with that?!?!

Cols - my class is at 6 and currently full (limited to about 4 people).

She does classes every 1/2 hour and yes you probably would be the only male - but we're not scary! Put your name down - she's really good.

Might try the S10 class as well, as that sounds more convenient for me.

Like all exercise it probably will ache a bit until you get into it.

Just reviving this thread -

Can anyone tell me what Pilates classes are available in the city centre or the Walkley area?

I took some classes out at Nether Edge last year, but logistically they just got too difficult to attend (it took me 2 hours to get home at the end of a class one evening! )

Pilates did fabulous things for my tummy though, so I'd love to get back to it.

When you qualify, will you buy an Aeroplane?

Sadly, no. :(

It's just too crowded in the skies nowadays to be any fun :D

Graves Tennis and Leisure centre at Meadowhead has several classes a week day and evening and the teacher is excellent. You don't have to be a member and can book 7 days before as long as you pay at the time. It is best to book for the Thursday evening class as that gets very full. Pilates is excellent for building core stability and strength and is used by ballet dances and athletes as it works lots of the smaller muscle groups that other excercise classes miss out.

Pilates is great - makes you feel better in lots of different ways. Got rid of my headaches and neck pains.
Does anyone know if there is a pilates class in Wisewood or Hillsborough? I've just moved and would like to start going again. Does anyone know of any other classes such as yoga, aerobics etc in that area? :)

I have neck & back problems following a car accident and I've tried various fitness classes, including Pilates - the ones I've found most helpful have been Yoga and a class called Core Stability which works mainly on core muscles (neck, back & abs) to improve posture and strength. I didn't really take to Pilates, I found a lot of the exercises quite uncomfortable to do and made my back & neck worse afterwards.
I go to classes at Hillsborough Leisure Centre but they do the same ones at Ponds Forge as well - they're both part of Sheffield International Venues and if you become a member it's free to do as many classes as you want. Look on their websites for more info (they also do a free trial membership day so you can have a look at the facilities and do some classes to see what it's like).
