View Full Version : Outlook with university mail account problem...
nick1983 21-02-2006, 21:36 Hi,
Having trouble getting my university webmail account to work with outlook express, have managed to get the mail delivered to outlook alright, but I can't send mail.
I'm with BT broadband and have tried mail.btinternet.com and mail.btopenworld.com for SMTP servers, but neither work...
There is a help page at:
http://www.shef.ac.uk/cics/email/outexp/oe_setup.html
but I don't really understand it.
I'm connected to the internet via a network if that complicates things.
Cheers
Nick
PS If anyone knows how to stop outlook deleting messages from the webmail as it downloads them that would be useful. Thanks again.
I had the same issue with my email. I have webspace which delivers mail to me but had to find my own server for outgoing. Used to use BT but like you say, now they don't work. (I ended up using my NTL one)
What MAY work is if you look in Properties for that account, and see what it says for "Email Address" under the General Tab. If you change that from your uni mail to your BT one you may find it starts sending - it did for me, but more than likely you don't want that BT address to show up. This was what made mine work or not, hence me changing it. However, I thought it was pointless using my webmail address but having it appear to come from my BT, may as well use that in the first place.
So not much help unless you don't mind where it says you sent the mail from.
As for the deleting issue, again, go to Properties > Advanced tab, and then at the bottom look for Delivery. There should be a check box to leave a copy of the mail on the server, this is what you want.
Hope this was of some help at least :)
Some time ago BT altered their T & Cs so that you need to register domains with them if you want to send mail for those domains via BT's servers. the idea is to reduce spam.
I gave them a list of domains that I'd be sending mail for and that worked fine.

The mail.btinternet.com address is for use with btinternet/btopenworld e-mail addresses.
Items 7 and 8 in you link tells you what you need to type in, i.e. if you are using webmail, the incoming server should be IMAP: Incoming mail should be imap.shef.ac.uk: Outgoing mail should be mailhost.shef.ac.uk.
The Incoming mail is slightly different for staff and research post graduates.
When you click next, and have put in the details requested, make sure that the secure authentication box is left unchecked.
Hope that helps.
EDIT: Those instructions apply to both Outlook and Outlook Express!
alchemist 22-02-2006, 07:00 If you are trying to access the unis imap accounts you need to specify the university imap server for incoming mails imap.shef.ac.uk but because the uni also supports pop3 the outgoing mail is sent via the generic mailhost.shef.ac.uk server. you will also need to set the security options so that is asks for you university login details
i have my outlook at home set so that it can read and send my uni mail but for some reason i cant get thunderbird to send, oh well thats one of lifes mysteries!!

thats a particular quirk of outlook express that thankfully outlook itself doesnt seem to have taken on board. you will need to look at the server properties and make sure that the leave the mails on the server option is checked otherwise it defauilts to deleting the messages as you get them

nick1983 22-02-2006, 08:07 Thanks for the replies,

How would I do this?
Still having trouble, I think the generic mailhost.ac.shef.uk only works if you have VPN or remote access, which I don't, but it may be easier to get that?
Incoming mail is working fine.
Have just discovered thunderbird...if that changes anything,
Nick
alchemist 22-02-2006, 11:43 using mailhost.shef.ac.uk does not require the use of VPN or anything else. mailhost is merely a server on the net that outlook or any other program will go off looking for.
Thunderbird works fine for me here at work in the uni but doesnt send when i am at home, outlook is fine however :(

Phanerothyme 22-02-2006, 11:47 you can install the Argosoft free SMTP server on your home machine and use that (127.0.0.1) as your outgoing mail relay.
I did this for my Dad, who had two domains he was sending 'from', and BT wouldn't relay his mail because they were not registered with BT.

download link is here - http://office.argosoft.com/files/apps/agsmail.exe

Hi, got it sorted now, thanks Dave.
Used mailhost.ac.shef.uk
I have also managed to get it working through thunderbird.
Thanks all.
