Me and my partner have been thinking of unusual girl names. We like Brook, but cant think of a middle name... We like different so no names like Sarah and Louise please (not that they are horrible names or anything) If you can think of any it would be fantastic. We are not pregnant yet but just organised - or sad! lol.

Mena, Mira, Shannyn:
Three of my favourite unusual girls names.
I'd pick one of those for my daughter.

Also, Imara sticks in my mind as an unusual girls name.
And my mom says I'd have been called Heather if I was a girl.

None of those follow Brook to comfortably though. Maybe I'll shut up.

The topic is a bit unrelated to General Sheffield chat though eh?!

I know how hard it is to name a baby we did everything from looking at the credits at the end of a film to reading every name book the libary had!!we ended up naming our daughter,Erin.

Maybe India, Annaliese

I had the same problem when my daughter was born. Trying to not use Sarah Claire etc (nothing wrong with them just not me) but didnt want to go too far that she sounded like some sort of undiscovered disease or other. I ended with Holly and middle name Amber. Bit traditional but not your run of the mill name.

Neve is a nice one, spelt differently the Irish way, Niamh, and Alexandra.
When i had my lad, if he was a girl he was gonna be called Georgia, 2 reasons one he was due and born on St George's day and the other i would have called her George which i think is a cool name for a girl. Harriet is also a good one to shorten to Harry.

How about Tehya?

Tehya is North American Indian for precious. Would have bene my son's name had he been a girl.

I also think Esme and Lola are lovely names that are rarely used these days.

Or, Ceridwen, again Welsh, meaning poetic or blessed poetry.

What goes after Brook?

Hard to think of anything except

Lynn
Shields
Bond

Sorry.....

Assuming that one of you can get pregnant, and assuming that you have a baby girl, and assuming that you do call her Brook in the end, what would her surname begin with? Have you decided which surname to give her? Only you would need to know what her initials would be.

For example, Brook Moor wouldnt want the middle name of Ursula, right?

So, more info required please

I am always thinking of unusual names, but then half the time they're so unusual that I forget them again

I really love Scarlet and Lily at the moment Also like Isabelle. And Lorien (as in Lothlorien from LOTR) as a middle name. Other LOTR names I like are Yavanna and Varda ;)

The one I liked from here was: "I've suggested to my sister that she name her little girl to be - Manchester. She's not sure about it but she's considering. What do you think?"

I think she can be called Manchester if she has strange ways.*

I remember in the 90's hearing about a woman in Sheffield who had called her poor unfortunate daughter T'Pau. I saw her in a magazine article and then later, whilst out shopping in Hilsborough, I saw her!! She was in the shoping centre, shouting at the top of her voice, "T'Pau, come her now!"

That poor girl. Everyone stopped and stared at her. She was about 6 or 7 then so I hate to think what her teenage years were like.

Cool concept of Heaven backwards, but reading the pronounciation isn't that like nivea as in the face cream?? -Why did nivea cream? Because max factor! (Sorry couldn't resist)

I have a fav girls name, which is actually a village in a foreign country, that I doubt anyone has heard of. The translation actually means hair! I can't possibly tell anyone on here though, as I want the unusual to stay unusual!!!

I had a friend called Larushka (Lar roosh ka) which I always thought was a great name, her parents made it up!

Like you, I have the tradition of a middle name. My son's middle name would have to have Edward. Daughter, Victoria.
I quite like the name Edward, these sort of names are becoming popular again - Eddy!
My Grandma was called Rosa, a.k.a Rosie. This sounded odd when I was a kid, but I actually think it's quite cool now! Funny how old names come back.

Whilst it is nice to give your offspring an unusual name.......remember THEY are the ones who have to live with it and tolerate the torment which goes hand in hand with ANYTHING remotely different. I went through HELL at school because of my middle name to the point where I cried..and even skipped school on occasion. I have dropped that name totally and it isn't on any other documentation other than my birth cert. Yeah, it is great to have a unusual name...but don't be too cruel!!!!

The reason for my warning regarding naming a child, so you all know....nothing to do with a drunken Dad or an inept Registrar.

1965... next door neighbour.... new baby boy.
They wanted to name him with a posh moniker.

Norman St.John Stevas, the politician, was always in the news.

They decided to call him St. John....but it was pronounced Sintgen Stevas on the television.

Their intelligence did not match their spelling...the baby ended up being christened Singeon. ( No offence meant in anyway to our Indian readers).

The child must have had constant problems explaining his name at school and in later life, at work.:loopy:

They all sound good names.

Seriously, its worth being aware that a name can 'tar' you for life. There was an isue about a discussion on the TES forum a few months ago (story was on the BBC news site) where teachers had been discussing names of kids. It seemed that certain names or types of names were associated with 'trouble makers'. One teacher had said that he used to go down the register of his new class every year highlighting names he thought literally spelled trouble! :o

Zipporah is a name from the bible. It means "little Bird"

Nieve is spanish for snow.

[u]]Neve[i/] is Irish, normally spelt "Niamh", properly pronounced "neeef" (it means "bright, Radiant")

I also like the name "Aiofe" which is gaelic for "Eve" (breath of life") it's pronounced in a similar way to Niamh.

I like the irish-y names, I always wanted a daughter, to name Eilish which is gaelic for Elisabeth, (can also be spelt Ailish ).

Elisabeth is from the hebrew Elisheba which means "consecrated to god" Elisabeth is a family name on my mother's side, given as a middle name, in each generation of females.

I like Megan/ Meaghan, (pearl) also.

Ruby, Mia, Sophia... beautiful names.

I always worry about the little kids who are saddled with deliberately outlandish names. The poor little buggers are probably teased horribly - or worse - by the time they get to school.

too much effort going into names! pick one that means something to you or just sounds nice...... being totally original may just ruin years of your kids life!

neef is the proper pronunciation, not the USA'n way.

of course, you can spell your name buff-orpington-rhodeisland red, and tell folks it's pronounced "bed" if you like (look at the surname "marjoribanks"- that's pronounced "marchbanks" or Cholmondleigh-Warner- "Chumly warner"

P-T ( but it's pronounced "Squibble-Bibble Essent" ;) )

adding a P-S

Siobhan- is the gaelic for Joanne, and pronounced "shi-vaurn/ or shi-vonn"

the bh and mh in gaelic, is a soft V-meets F sound, as in free.

(another gaelic name is Mhairhi? it's pronounced "vairee")

Its actually Cholmondeley or Cholmondesley.

Other examples are
Beauchamp (Beecham);
Cockburn (Coburn:
Featherstonehaugh (Fanshaw);
Menzies (Mingis);
Woolfhardisworthy (Woolsey).

Some of these appear to derive from Anglicised versions of Norman-French names, although not all.

Not going against what you said, PT, but I wonder if pronunciation differs between Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic?

I have a couple of (distantish) relatives from the Scottish Isles called Mhairi, and they pronounce it 'Maari'.

Fascinating subject.

Yes, starsparkle, there are a few, very minor differences in pronunciation between Irish gaelic, and Scottish "gallic"

same as spanish... the way spanish is spoken in spain, compared to the way it is spoken in the south american countries where it is the national language,
In spain, ibiza is pronounced "EE bee Ther"

In south america, it's "ee beesss- er"

I know this is a GIRLS name thread, but this is so funny:-

mr H, your post brought to mind an incident about 10/15 yrs ago.

Mmy ex hubby was involved in a youth exchange with an allied youth-group in Bergen, Norway.

One of the lads who came over was called Kjetl.

It wasn't pronounced "kyettle" mind you, in Norwegian, the K-J is a "sheh" sound, so he was a "Sheyttel".

(cf the towns of Byskopskjoping" Bishops sherping" and Bykyoping sorry can't get the alt- letter for the o with a mark)
