View Full Version : Water Tablets
Hi
I'm wanting to lose some weight, and apart from exercising, have been told that water tablets are a good way to get rid of excess water. is this true, or do you have any other tips/suggestions?
Thanks
S
I'm not an expert, but I wouldn't take drugs to make you lose 'excess' water.
UNless you're suffering from something like unregulated high blood pressure or a metabolic problem or have taken an inordinate amount of ecstacy, the body is pretty good at regulating how much it wants you to drink and how much it excretes.
I'd actually make sure you're drinking enough water each day before doing anything else - I know that I often eat when I'm actually thirsty. Next time you go to the loo, check the colour of your urine; if it's very dark you're potentially dehydrated. If your urine is a pale yellow or colourless then you're probably OK water wise.
But tablets - no, I'd give 'em a miss.

Eat sensibly and exercise regulally and the weight will soon fall off- its that simple!!!!
Diuretics (I'm assuming are what you are referring to) are drugs used to treat high blood pressure. Some women occasionally take them to reduce extreme hormonal water retention. They certainly should never be used for weight loss. If you took them you will experience a sudden drop in weight, but this is water, not fat and will go back on as soon as you stop taking the tablets. You will also become severely dehydrated. A very very stupid idea.
GoGo_dancer 20-02-2006, 13:14 Sorry, but this made me chuckle!
A friend of mine once used some of these to assist her dieting, and they were packed full of caffeine and she was like a little ever-ready bunny back and forth to the loo all the time! We thought it was hilarious!
Anyway, back to the subject, I've been 'dieting' since New Year, and I've cut out all junk food, white bread, crisps and chocolate, started eating a lot more veg and along with some moderate exercise 3 times a week I've lost half a stone and I feel much better. I've even managed to avoid this throat bug that's been doing the rounds and that's a first for me!
So just be sensible, reduce your portions, replace chips with veg, chew slowly and try some gentle exercise and you should see slow but steady progress.
Good luck!
A normal, otherwise healthy person does not have 'excess' water. Follow the advice above regarding water tablets.
As for weight loss; eat less, exercise more, avoid faddy diets. Also, don't dramatically reduce your calorie intake because you'll more than likely end up rebounding to your starting weight - if not beyond - once you start eating food which provides a normal healthy calorific intake.
Hi guys
Many thanks for your feedback - based on this I've decided to join the gym at Don Valley and get a personal trainer for a little motivation!
Can learn to live without the fatty bad foods - it's just the lager that's gonna take some serious will power! - But I'm sure I'll get there!
Again many thanks!
Boldo - do exactly what u want. herbal - used predominantly by ladies who have excess fluid at certain times of the month.

If you take them and you dont need to they can ruin your kidneys, Ive read somewhere. Its not real weight loss if you just lose water though, it'll soon come back. But I have heard that you can shed excess water using natural methods like eating celery which is supposed to be a natural diuretic. There are also herbal medicines for water retention which contain celery and boldo. I wouldnt take them for long though.

What is the point of using 7 lb of water in a week? You'll have the same level of lard, you won't be any fitter and it has no long-term effect, unless you want to keep taking the tablets, which isn't advisable anyway.
shoeshine 20-02-2006, 20:03 As part of my medication, following a slight heart attack, I was and am still using "water tablets"
I don't follow the prescription medication instructions precisely, but if I did, my life would be unbearably interrupted with visits to the loo.
I have lost a lot of weight, but the last thing I would recommend is that you even consider using this medication to achieve the same result.
Do the recommended actions of another poster on here, lose the weight naturally.
ppn_2204....your analysis of the situation is spot-on.

never said there was a point. the op asked a question i responded with my limited knowledge. use or ignore it - no need to abuse it.
