Just a bit of fun to find out whether every area has their own Pond Street Nora type person. When I lived in Woodhouse there was Craig who used to ride on the buses with all the bus drivers, then on Birley Moor Top there used to be a guy who would wave at all the buses and lorry's all day but I think he left sheffield. Now theres a old Guy on Birley Moor Top who I see on my way to work who wears a reflective jacket and picks up rubbish in his Wilko's bag. Then at Handsworth theres "Wavey Davey" who stands at his front window with his hand on a duster against the glass and I'm convinced he doesnt move cus he's always there. Oh just thought of another from when I lived in Stradbroke, it was "Bag Man" he used to carry two stripy shopping bags around with him full of sheets and a radio plonked on top. You would see him absolutly everywhere as he walked allover sheffield.

These people are absolute legends and the world would be so dull without them.

I'm convinvced that every area has one so pray tell, prove me right!!!

There is this old geezer that stalks about ecclesall and nr town. He looks emaciated and has a protruding chin, and if its hot he struts his chest 'au natural' He usually has a few bags about him too. He brings a smile to my face whenever I see him. He's been around for time. Anyone know who I mean?

That's Care in the Community for you. All sorts of strange people wandering the streets.

'm not so sure I would find it dull without them- still each to their own.

You are right, Wintersmist. He's not a mirage. Not seen him for 6months or so (maybe he's been wearing a winter coat)
Oft to be seen walking along Clarkhouse Rd carrying 2 full plastic carrier bags exhibiting his bony chest to all and sundry, even on cooler days. I'm sure I've seen him with a notted hanky on his bonce on particulary hot days as well.
He certainly looks the part of a local present day eccentric and following a grand tradition

My area had Walter, Battery Ken, Maureen and Mr Trousers to name but a few.

Stll see maureen, and I think Walter is still doing his rounds, although he'll be about 200 years old by now.

Yes. There has been one in every (western) city that I ever visited. There even used to be one of these guys,s in Colchester (essex), who'd walk to the beach for his holidays once a year. It would take him nearly a week to go the 15 miles, and he used to walk past my house on his way, every year, every june!!!

For years now we have been passing the "old man in the bungalow" and we always wave at him, he never waves back mind, but there you are.

We always wonder who he is waiting for.

These people obviously have mental problems of one sort or another. Is it right to make fun of them in this way?

People should find more interesting things to do rather than being amused by people with a mental health illness.

I agree, like helping them.

maybe its just me but i thought that the PC bandwagon left Sheffield a while ago.

OK, on that basis. Instead of sharing in a little harmless fun; lets take this a little more seriously.

Maybe everyone knows of someone locally who likes to take a jovial situation far too seriously and pulls out the Politically Correct ''red card'' for little reason. If you are aware of such people, draw them to our attention so that we can give them their 5 mins of fame which they clearly crave!!

It only a JOKE - i cant believe how some people react. You could tell a joke about toilet paper, and i bet these same old bods would be standing to the unrequired defence of toilet tissue manufacturers. Basically, from what i have read of the thread - there has been no deformation of any of the characters spoken of. They possess querks. We ALL do in some sort of way. If you can't smile at the lighter side of life, i doubt you ever do. Get over it!!! We're supposed to be Sheffielders by nature, not the thought police.
RANT OVER, END OF.......

I didnt think anyone was taking the mickey out of these people, just commenting on their lives. I was talking to one called Rodney who dresses as a bus driver and travels to town and all the suburbs even has a Mainline bus uniform. Gets everyone in the bus laughing WITH HIM, NOT AT HIM.Im fairly sure they wouldnt like being patronised either (you know who you are)

I know a few of the aformentioned people.

Rodney ......... was known as the mad monk by some on account of his hair! Bus Mad!! I got to know him really well a few years ago when he and some of his fellow day centre users attended the same arts and crafts course as me for about 3 years running. He is a lovely harmless man wo frequently bought presents for my young daughter. As well as being bus mad he was also mad on chickens!!

Walter ........... he hung round Hillsborough Park when I was a kid and he still does. He gives the kids conkers and things he makes out of paper. Again, harmless!!

Battery Ken........... ginger hair, shopping bag, lots of batteries. And I thought it was just me and my brother who called him that!!

Mr Trousers aka Douggie. Was one of Middlewoods last patients along with Maureen (serial tram hopper......... "gotta light?") Known as Mr Trousers as he wears them either ala Simon Cowell or round his ankles! Will drop is trousers and "go" almost anywhere including the middle of the street.

I don't think anyone is ridiculing these people. They are part of our community. Ok, maybe they give us a smile or two but who of us hasn't laughed at someone for the way they look or the things they do?

I am sure many a person has had a good laugh at my expense and I'm glad I made them smile.

I find it so dissapointing that quite a lot of post's are so bad tempered and intolerant. Some people who frequent this forum seem to take delight in being abusive, judgemental and offensive. The rule seems to be, if anyone has a different opinion then stamped them down at once because there is only one view that should be tolerated and that is "mine". It's not very edifying and does not encourage others to join in the discussion.

Wavey Davey has been at his window for years, he was there every day when I used to walk past his house on my way to school in the late 1980's. We all used to wave to him when walking past. I was amazed to see that he's still there waving away with his duster. He's actually called Mr Greenwood known to all school kids and people of Handsworth and just a lonely old man just passing on his days with his waving antics and watching the world go by his window.

Well bugger me, when I left this thread yesterday there were 3 reply's. Talk about the Sheffield Trisha Forum or what. My post never had any tinge of malice to it. These people are probably quite happy doing what they are doing or they wouldnt be doing it. If it was up to the likes of Ambidex etc then they would have these people on a secure unit trying to care to their every need, trying to council them and keep them from walking around the streets. I know from my work that this would **** them off. They want to be "bus mad", carry shopping bags allover sheffield, stand at thie window and watch the world go by with a duster in thier hand. There will ALWAYS be these people in 5, 10, 20 years and why try to condem them to a secure unit where you can "care" for them. These people make me "smile" what a valuable thing a smile is,. Sorry for going on but I hope people find the following of some inspiration:

A SMILE

It cost nothing, but creates much.
It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.
It happens in a flash and the memory of it lasts forever.
None are so rich they can get along without it and none so poor but are richer for its benefits.
It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends.
It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away!
If someone is too tired to give you a smile, leave one of yours.
For, nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none to give.

I think First South Yorkshire should recruit him quick. They are short of drivers.

Seriously, I think I've seen a few of the people mentioned here. To be truthful I try to avoid them if I can. I suppose there is a serious question about Care in the Community and how well it serves either those with mental health problems or the public at large. There have been a few cases where former mental patiants have killed or seriously harmed complete strangers. I'm not saying they are all dangerous but it does happen.

I am usually the last person to be PC but I just commented on whether or not it was in bad taste to laugh at people who clearly have problems. I didn't mean to offend anyone here.

If it were up to me, and I ruled the world, or ran this Forum, which I dont and it isnt, I would have this thread removed

Not because I dont think you should be talking about eccentrics, some of them might even want to be talked about for all I know. But because you are all so bloody rude to each other. I dont want people to think I hang around on a Forum where people can be so unpleasant and arsy.

I resect your comments above but when I watched Big Brother and everyone talked amicably it got boring but when people have different views and theres abit of fracar it makes interesting reading.

Chloe Thats the one. Funny thing is he was self named as his wheelbarrow used to have the name " troggy 1 " painted on it. However it was easy to get him to give you a chase just by shouting TROGGY loudly in his direction.

I too have recently seen him ( minus the barrow ) walking up Mansfield Road.

I'm going off the point a bit but it's fascinating how this thread developed and how the debate became so inflamed.
It seems to me that originally it was based on quite inoccuous non- judgemental observations which if anything were quite affectionate in tone.
No one was taking the p*** as far as I could determine.

There are mentally ill people on the streets (another subject)
but there have always been genuine eccentrics and it's not surprising given the rate of human development over the past 7000years that some people have trouble coping with modern society. After all we are just particularly intelligent mammals and none of us are living naturally.

Some people are eccentric and it's a fact and they do tend to be noticed. Do we pretend they don't exist by not mentioning them because it may not be polite? Isn't that in some way denying their very existence?
I don't think anyone was being cruel or abusive.

We more and more live in a society in which views and opinions become more and more narrow, bland and uniform and when people stray off this narrow path they are fair game. (Any critic of Israel's foreign policy is likely to be described as anti-semetic in some quarters etc etc but I digress again)

These eccentrics walking our streets are different, they have always attracted our attention and curiousity and I would suggest that our world is all the more interesting with them in it.
I certainly don't see them as figures of fun
