View Full Version : What do you look for in a new house?
When buying a new house. 2nd home. what do you look for in particular.
garden, garage. etc.
we are torn between 2 houses. one has a big lounge, 2 bathrooms. no storage space. not as nice as position. doesnt stand as good as the other one. this one has been for sale quite a while,
the other one has one bathroom, they are both decorated v. well. ]
I am confused !
Yellowrose 20-02-2006, 12:17 Convenience of location is high on anyones list. Is it convenient for work by car (what are the routes like at rush hour?) by bus or tram (stops nearby? stops near to your work?) convenient for friends and relatives? If you dont have kids, still consider the schools aspect as they may come along. If you do have kids, you will have thought this one through. Can you park your car (s) outside? is there a drive? Is the road too busy? Noisy? Do youths hang about? What do your neighbours plots look like?
Then space. You will never have enough. Living space is very important if your family expands or if you have family round for meals. There's nothing more embarrassing than asking someone to sit on the floor, or balance a dinner tray on their knee! Enough bedrooms to allow for future expansion? Bathroom/shower provision? Do you need an extra toilet or bathroom? Storage space - especially if you have a lot of clutter - is important, but you can always bung a shed on the back garden or use the loft.
Can you imagine yourself living there? Would you feel comfortable in that lounge?
Which area is best placed for future house sales? (been on sale quite a while - ask why?)
Phew! quite a list!
they are both literally round the corner from each other. but differnt styles. both look v. different. the one that doesnt look so good is on split level. but they have used all the space up. so there is no storage space. I suppose we could put a cupboard somewhere. just for like ironing board. shoes. things like that.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 20:51 have you got any kids?
IMO, you'll already have a 'gut feel', even if you haven't realised it yet. Think about it...... imagine that the Forum people come down heavily on one house rather than the other. Are you secretly pleased? Or disappointed and somehow feeling a little disloyal to the other one?
You've seen the houses, we haven't. And you're the ones who are going to have to live in the one you choose! Is there a financial aspect? One feels more 'right' to you than the other. Which one would you hate to lose if someone else bids higher? Which one would you be prepared to increase your offer on? Which one would you shrug and let go if someone else bids higher?
Between you both, you'll make the right decision for you two.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 21:02 i have just moved, i was going to do the norm and move from a terraced to a semi then onto a detached, i cut out the semi and went straight to a detached, best move ever if this is one of your options go for a detached.
they are not 'perfect'. I would prefer to live in the one that looks good from outside. as it looks better. but only seen it once. the other one, you would drive past it and wouldnt give it a 2nd look. they are all like that on the close. but inside it does look really good.
but for what we can afford it is the best one we have seen. it is £190. we can go up to £200k 210k may be.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 21:08 if you don't mind me asking what area are you looking at?
postcode s35. or maybe thorpe hesley.
it is detatched. but cannot build anywhere on. not really. they are still close-ish together. the garden is a bit private. ish. the lounge is big.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 21:17 before i bought my house i came back to look at it several times, drove around the area at night and even spoke to the people in the area, i feel when you are spending so much money a little embaressment does not really matter.my advice is to do a little homework before you buy.one house maybe great but the area could be going down hill.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 21:18 s35 is that stocksbridge, just found out it is chapletown area
even if they are round the corner from each other?
I do know what you mean. as ther are 2 for sale on there at the moment. the one we like has been for sale since end of may beginning of june last year. there is 1 offer on at the moment, he is selling that (his property) and not sold it yet. how would you find out about the road. if there is a problem in those particular houses?
I dont think so.
Chapeltown, grenoside burncross ecclesfield oughtibridge.
PESKY6969 20-02-2006, 21:32 go to our property .co.uk you have sign up but wiil give you free up to date prices that properties have sold for. this will give you an idea of wether the value of the house and area has gone down, no disrespect but i was advised not to buy in that area.
Yellowrose 20-02-2006, 22:16 but they have used all the space up. so there is no storage space. I suppose we could put a cupboard somewhere. just for like ironing board. shoes. things like that.
That would be a daily hassle for me. Every day I would get fed up of seeing the clutter that should go away somewhere. Its a bit like that where I live now. Its not that we dont have storage, but that which we have is all full up as there are too many of us in a tiny house. If you get round to having kids, no where to put their buggy, or shoes when they get bigger will drive you crazy. It just makes the place look untidy or cluttered.
Hi Pesky. when you say put you off in that area. do you mean the whole of s35.
nothing wrong with it. most of the places are ok.
I live in Grenoside and would not live anywhere else, it is lovely, so don't tarnish S35 as a whole just because of certain parts on Ecclesfield!!
PESKY6969 21-02-2006, 11:25 it's just what i have heard.
