View Full Version : Nappy laundering service?

Currently wavering between disposable nappies vs terry towelling, I wondered if anyone knows of or has used a nappy laundering service in this area, and has any idea how much it would cost?
I'm not happy about using disposables because of the landfill aspect, and from my research terry towelling nappies are also far cheaper, even when washing costs are included, but washing tonnes of nappies every week isn't exactly my idea of fun! If its the cheapest way, fine, but if it means paying just a tiny bit extra for a firm to do it that might be the best idea.
I have heard some councils offer the service but not sure if Sheffield is one of them.

I was half watching Richard & Judy one evening recently, and they had someone on there talking about disposable nappies, and I remember her mentioning environmentally-friendly disposables, which can used more than once, apparently, and they are also biodegradable.

As I said, I was only half watching/listening, so I don't know the details.

EDIT: Just found these site ~ there are many more...

This is great news!

Try Nappy Hopper, 01522 684 495. We have used them for 3.5yrs and are very very good.

They bring you a pile of freshly laundered nappies, provide you with a colsed top bin and take away your dirties so you don't even have to look at them.

Or, if you wanted to do it yourself, peeweez.co.uk do birth to potty nappies all made of recycled towels. And she's a local mum wokring from home so you'd be supporting a good cause.

OR you could click on the google ads on the left here <-

Let us know how you get on.

I have considered all of this for my new granddaughter, but I really feel I cannot cope with anymore washing and we certainly cannot afford the laundry service. My own situation is very different to yours though - I have lots on my plate in other ways. Also I remember back to when my eldest had terry nappies, he seemed to have a sore bottom more often than kids do in disposables even though I was very fussy about changing him. The nappies at night were always absolutely saturated. The plastic pants used to rub on their thighs too, although I understand these are different now. The smell too of soaking nappies ... disposables dont smell as bad as they dont hang around so long!

If you go for it, please let us know how you get on.

Good for you Sheffette,

I used reusables for my son, though I washed them myself, to be honest washing them wasn't that much of a bind, streight from the bucket to washing machine then straight onto the radiator or washing line (dont put the waterproof wrap on the radiator though you'll ruin it).

Try the womens environmental network www.wen.org.uk for lots of information.

As far as I know using a laundering service more or less negates the savings you make, but I might be wrong on that point.

We used terrys for both ours - they are 22 months apart until the youngest was a few months old - then it got too much.

We got some stuff from kooshis - can't remember the spelling but google should see you right.

These are really stylish and smart - you save an absolute fortunte

Just use disposables for going out & night time

Once side effect is washing shirts and trainers etc with nappysan brings them really clean

We use washable nappies, mainly Minki and Tots Bots ( www.nappiesbyminki.co.uk www.totsbots.com ) but some other types too.

I don't soak them, just use a dry pail - it is much easier for me and washing machines are good enough today to be able to get them thoroughly washed without soaking. I use about 1/4 powder though and sometimes put them on an extra rinse.

Not really sure what the nappy service is like but I wash nappies every other day or else they start to smell a bit and I am not sure how often they would get collected with a laundering service.

Thanks for the advice people! You've all been really helpful and I'll be investigating your suggestions and following up the links in the next few days.

Just made a purchase from peeweez www.peeweez.co.uk . The nappies look really good, so anyone considering using washables should check them out.

Ahhh, I used to love seeing clean nappies blowing on the washing line. I bought Kooshie wraps then folded terry nappies to sit inside, it worked well for me. It also helps them to potty train as the moisture isn't absorbed whereas a disposable nappy means they can ignore it.

we are considering http://www.lotties.co.uk/ the products look great but we also have the benefit of having two washers (one for sh*tty nappies and one for my white work shirts - hope I know which is which). We will be ordering from germany as the price is a little better and they will deliver to the UK.
